      The drugs wouldn't be there if the politicians/cops weren't complicit, if not out and out pushing. That's true of every community. Clean up the cops, et al, and good decent people will clean up the town.

    Good job covering the far SW kingdom of VT. Having lived here for sometime, Bennington is going through a very transformative time. The downtown is vibrant and has a lot of new eateries, shops, breweries, and an awesome distillery. The vibe is good as long as you're making a decent income, and live outside of the bad areas downtown. Crime, drugs, poverty, and a poor school system (in two of the elementary districts) leave some room for improvement, but if you're not in that circle it won't affect your day to day life. If you're a first time home buyer or retiree with a modest income, Bennington real estate is a steal. Lots of stuff to do within an hour's drive. Albany is 50 min away, North Adams 30 min, Williamstown 20 min, Manchester 30 min, Saratoga, 50 min, ski areas 40 min. Bennington has a lot going for it, but also a lot of issues. Home values are still very reasonable even in the current market.

      Hey Rory, I'd be happy to do a virtual showing for you and I could give you an idea of the neighborhood/street view better then. It's a bit closer to downtown than I'd like but it's a duplex so for rental purposes that's not necessarily the worst. It's not the worst neighborhood but it's not the greatest either. Bennington is much safer than Brooklyn due to it having a lot less violent crime, but it does make up by having a lot more property crimes per capita. It's the kind of neighborhood where there shouldn't be issues but I'd still lock your doors, and the neighbor could be a drug dealer... I might be overstating it but better to expect the worst and be pleasantly surprised!

    I moved here from nearby Pioneer Valley in Western MA at the tail end of 2021 and I've also lived on the West Coast twice, including L.A. and Klamath Falls, OR. I can say that Bennington's crime, compared to many other places in the US, is almost negligible. My sister moved here from Springfield, MA and isn't afraid to walk around town with her son at night. It's a relatively quiet little town, although a lot of local young people seem to have a thing for loud, "souped up," farty cars that they obnoxiously drive up and down the streets (a friend calls it "mechanical flatulence").
    Interestingly, most of the crime that comes to town is from out of state, and it's *not* from nearby Troy or Albany, NY, but rather from Holyoke and Springfield, MA (2 hours away opposed to under an hour), according to local news, court trials, and arrests. However, since much of the criminal activity seems to be drug-related, it's generally not a problem to the average resident unless you're running with the wrong crowd. I never even hear about many of the events until days (or a week) afterward.
    Bennington is experiencing a little revival and some growth. I recently attended a jazz concert at Little City Cider Co. (brewery), something I usually have to go to MA or NY for (except for the exceptional Vermont Jazz Center in Brattleboro). A few other places feature live music, like the Coffee Bar downtown. There are lots of new businesses coming in right now (post-COVID) it seems, and the town has a lot of little street festivals, which is nice because the nearest local fairgrounds seems to be up in Rutland.
    I've lived most of my life in little city towns of this size and this seems very nice to me, a little mellower than my hometown of Greenfield, MA and definitely quieter than places like Northampton, Holyoke (the armpit of Western MA), nearby North Adams, Pittsfield (now ridden w/crime) in MA or even Brattleboro, just on the other side of the Green Mountains, and considerably bigger Rutland. People are generally friendly and it's rural in every direction when you leave this small city-town.
    The NY Capitol Region is nearby and nightlife abounds there with cities like Albany, Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls, and the tourist town of Lake George. There's a lot to do and see just a short drive away for those that want more restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Overall, this isn't a bad little area and I like it. Although I felt a little more centrally located in the Pioneer Valley, the crime and craziness there makes this look like Mayberry.

    One thing you don’t mention is that a lot of people just aren’t right in the head there, like there’s something in the drinking water. I always suspected that people were eating rainbow trout out of the river that’s downstream from the Eveready Battery Plant.

      As a transplant from just over the border from Brattleboro (Greenfield, MA), this little town is not that bad. In fact, it's kind of tame (and not very diverse). Unless you run with a bad crowd, the crime here doesn't affect most and is very low when you look at other similar-sized towns, especially out-of-state or even nearby Brattleboro (which I love anyway).

    Finally, you did Bennington. Your assessment matched my research and experience. I think you give short shrift to the fact that Bennington is almost a suburb of Albany. The Albany airport is even closer to Bennington than Albany downtown. The fact that Albany is so close, cuts both ways. It surely helps explain the higher crime rates. However, this is the case with any larger metropolitan area, and the benefits of being so close to Albany are also considerable. There really isn't another part of Vermont that has this upside/downside, unless you consider Plattsburgh/Burlington, which is a fraction of the size of Albany.

    Looking into moving to Vermont. I’ve been doing a lot of research and so far seems like a good fit. But I’d like to get people’s’ opinions who know the area as looking up statistics can seem more daunting than it truly is. >>How is Bennington or VT in general with wildfires/droughts and flooding??

    • @LivinginVermont
      @LivinginVermont  Před 2 lety +3

      Vermont hardly gets any natural disasters at all. Wildfires don't happen hardly at all at least compared to out west. I dont think we've had any large scale wildfires anytime recent. Same with droughts, they don't happen very often if at all. Flooding is really only a concern in floodzones, but we don't get major floods that often either. Being in a floodzone doesn't mean major floods necessarily, it just means there's a much higher chance. In the spring when snow melts and it rains a lot there's generally higher water levels and some low fields get flooded, but as for major flooding I think the worst in recent times was during hurricane Irene in 2011 and I'm not even sure how bad that was for Vermont. Overall Vermont doesn't get many natural disasters though, especially compared to the dry west... there are lots of farms in VT so you shouldn't have an issue.

    • @jesseoglidden
      @jesseoglidden Před 2 lety +1

      Flooding is currently considered to be a much higher risk, and with climate change, it will get worse. Basically, a warmer atmosphere holds more water, and Vermont's winters have been shortening on both ends. When looking for a place to live, take the FEMA floodplain maps as a suggestion, and look at some other sources. Also, consider your access to supplies and services, especially medical services. You may be well out of a floodplain on a hillside, but will you be stranded there after the flood takes out the charming covered bridge? Most of Vermont's housing stock was built in the 19th & 20th centuries, and much of it is incredibly vulnerable to flooding in the 21st.

    • @LivinginVermont
      @LivinginVermont  Před 2 lety +1

      I'd definitely look at the 100 and even 500 year flood maps if you're worried about it. Sellers have to disclose if it's in a flood hazard zone, but it's good to look it up anyways.

    • @laureldavis500

      @@LivinginVermont where were you in 2011? Irene was terrible for those affected by the flooding

    • @LivinginVermont
      @LivinginVermont  Před 2 lety

      I was 9 at the time. I certainly was not affected by the floods back then. As I said, floodzones are the places that need to worry about it really. I get that the previous 2 major hurricane floods made the flood maps change a bit but overall the majority of VT doesn't deal with floods very often. Vermont has lots of river towns & cities but the ones that are more prone to flooding have taken measures to prevent them. I typically don't recommend buying a home in a high flood risk area.

Depends how far you want to go. Like everywhere good and bad everywhere were just a smaller town so we get more attention. More cops then people lol here. And the real Vermonters sit back as out of townies buy up land post it and don't let us hunt in places we have our whole life.bthat and the smug additudes we deal with... Alot of us are backwood hicks. Don't get me wrong there are some good ones that move in. It's a small town and alot of us locals can trust amongst ourself with word of mouth and a handshake. Most of Vermont is not liberal. It's actually conservative outside the few larger areas like Bennington, Burlington, Essex jct. Montpelier, Barre,, Rutland.. they are liberal and sadly hold more sway than central Vermont does.
    Vt also has many independents too in retrospect.
    I'd definitely choose Bennington over Burlington Montpelier.

      Most of VT population wise is liberal. The more rural areas typically farmer communities are often more conservative. Rutland is actually the most conservative large town in the state. In some cities it's gone from just liberal to more leftist like in Burlington.

    If you want heartbreak and death feel free to visit Bennington. For me it was where I lost everything. Some girl got her throat cut in broad daylight downtown. Place is a dumpster fire. I would not recommend on visiting unless your trying to buy property to become a section 8 slum Lord.
