Poulans are notorious for running a short while and then refusing to start. I have had several and the key is to learn how to adjust the carb, especially the High adjustment and making sure the spark gap is correct. Time and time again I have sworn that I would never buy another one and then I go to Home Depot and see the price compared to an Echo and end up buying another one. The last time I went out to cut some Brazillian Pepper trees, I couldn't get my Echo started and used my Poulan Pro all day. I keep promising myself I will just get a Stihl....but I have managed to keep my last Poulan working pretty good.

I got to use my new Poulan Pro saw once and hope that it works the next time I try starting it. My old Poulan saw have worked for me for years now. The new saw had to be taken to the shop because it would not start for me. They replaced the carburetor on it before it would start. There was a problem with it and that was fixed.

Even though my Dads Poulan Pro broke with less than 3hrs on it, I love the Saw. My 100yr old pecan tree got struck by lightning. I borrowed my Dads Brand-new P. Pro 20" & less than 3hrs later, the Black Plastic Gear & spring inside the Starter Kit broke or stripped out!! So now I'm down for 2wks waiting on the $10 replacement black gear & spring. Must have been a Manufacturer Defect. I put a $15 Series 70 Oregon Chisel Chain on her just before she broke & that sucka eats through wood like a real Pro! I'll never use anything smaller than 50cc w/ that particular chain again. I did try that chain on a friend's 18" Husky & Stihl & both just bogged down. That Series 70 chain bites hard. Love it. Can't wait to get this baby running again. Never had an issue starting it also. Choke once, then close & pull. She'll start Everytime. Once warm? She just needs a light pull & she'll fire right up. I just don't like the plastic parts inside the Starter Kit.

My chain won’t spin freely, guessing the bar needs to be replaced. I also didn’t know to look for wood chips rather than saw dust as an indicator the blades needed sharpening. I’ll chalk my chain spin issue up to user error. Worked well while it worked, but seems like it needs a higher attention level than other saws? Hopefully I’ll get it fine-tuned so it’s reliable for a while longer.

For all the Husqvarna fans: Poulan is a brand name of the Swedish manufacturer Husqvarna AB, once a component of the Swedish conglomerate Electrolux. In 2006 Electrolux spun off Husqvarna AB into its own company, with Poulan nested beneath.

I have cut over 7 cords of red oak with my poulan pro 42cc 18 inch bar , the saw works darn good , easy to start i use poulan 2 stroke and husky bar oil , gotta keep the chain adjusted , just let it warm up for a minute and it screams , let the saw do the work , keep a few sharpened extra chains and a new spark plug handy , use fresh gas & oil mix , always drain fluids out of it when not in use and this saw will do a great job , for a guy like me who cuts 2 or 3 cords a year has not let me down , i have had this saw for 2 years and it was a fair price when i purchased it new . i am not a lumberjack by trade , i live in a oak forest at lake nacimiento , i like the red oak for bbq and white for fire place.

Hey maybe you could explain something to me. I have a Poulan Lawn tractor that has been through hell. Rats have eaten all the wires. My mother has run over everything from stumps to chunks of random metals and with a bit of tweaking and replacement parts it is absolutely fine. Now here is my question. I have a Poulan Pro 16" chainsaw, and have owned a few other chainsaws made by Poulan. Do you guys actually know how to make a chainsaw? Every chainsaw I have purchased with the name Poulan on has never been able to keep adjustment on the chain. Gas caps never fit right and a slew of other problems. Now after owning a few other brands of chainsaw. I have come to the conclusion the problem does not lie with me. I fail to understand how a lawn tractor produced by you is almost an indestructible tank, while a chainsaw by the same company is as about as useful as a cube shaped bowling ball.

Just get a Stihl or Shindaiwa if you can't put up with the somewhat finicky Poulan. You really have to follow good clean practices with fuel, starting, and maintenance. Run just fine if you do for about 1/3rd to 1/2 the price. Best saw I ever had was a Shindaiwa 591, never an issue and strong as hell. Someone else liked it a lot too and relieved me of it from my garage. I'll stick with poulan.

Bought a refurbished Poulan Pro 18 from VM INNOVATIONS. When we put bar oil in, it ran out. VM INNOVATIONS won't take it back or refund the money b/c we bought it in Nov. and did not put it together until this spring. 90 days had expired.

I just need to know where to put the gas into the chainsaw. I bought a PoulanPro PR3816 today. Do I just pour it in to one hole? There are silicone "pipes" all throughout the inside where I looked and don't want to screw it up. I know more about lawn mowers. On the manual there is something about bar oil and gas, but I have a 50:1 pre-mixture that I bought with the chainsaw today. So what am I supposed to do? Do I have to buy something else? Do I just use what I have? I need some help. I have all the other answers I need but this one. And yes I know what I'm doing otherwise. I'm a strong independent black woman and I don't need no man, I will never depend on a man again. The only thing is I just have a question if someone could tell me what to do about this gas and oil thing? That's all. Thanks, friends! I gotta cut some trees down! No sense in paying crooks to do what I can do for my mother myself!

I have a couple of poulan chainsaws I bought from CTC ( AKA china tire ) and I would like to say I've had pretty good luck with them....but I can't. Even right from new just about always a problem starting them, or if they do start they don't run right once they've been working a while. I am very careful with ensuring I use non ethanol gas with the correct mixture and keep very clean gas containers. I keep plenty of new spare spark plugs and air filters on hand. It's as if these Poulan chainsaws are afraid of wood. It's a fairly simple machine, I suspect that the Poulan factory quality control and is poor and that every once in in a while you might get a good one but far too often the build and the materials used are poor. I live in northern Canada, everybody has a chainsaw (s) . My friends and family who mostly own 10 plus year old Swedish made chainsaws laughed at me for buying these Poulans. They said they are called Poulans because you will have to " pull and" " pull and " pull to get them going. Unfortunately they were right. To bad, I realize these are entry level " home owner" grade and not really professional grade logging machines but I don't think I'm being unreasonable to expect they should start and run properly on the rare occasion I need to cut a little wood. I don't recommend these chainsaws or buying any yard or lawn equipment from "china tire" either. I would suggest paying a little more and buying from a dealer who will make it right if you have a problem instead of a chain store that will not do anything for you, is full of part time people ( mostly kids ) who don't know anything and you can never find when you need help and just get answering machines when you call. Sorry for sounding negative, but that's the way it is. Anyone else had similar experience ?

Many differences between current "Poulan" and "PoulanPro" saws besides the color (green/gold). I've had a couple "PPros" for 4-5 yrs, and they still give good service. Great prices on refurbs at VMInnovations. It helps to know what your're doing. E.g. with PP4218, I tossed the NFG "Torch" plug and went one step colder with NGK. No-mo hot-start probs. Husqy splined carb tool a MUST.

I killed one in less than 10 hours of use, was told that "it was used too hard." I'TS A CHAINSAW! It didn't run right when it was removed from the box (new) despite the manufacturer's claim that the "carb was adjusted at the factory." Poulan would not stand behind their product when I called them, didn't even offer to have it looked at by a local "authorized service center."
When i finally had had enough (& it would no longer start) I ponied up the $30 to have their "certified" clowns look at it. They condemned the saw, saying it was used too hard & was not worth fixing.
So, i bought a new cylinder & piston kit on Ebay ($75), rebuilt the SOB, no carb adjustments, runs like it should have when it was new.
Sounds like Poulan sold me a lemon & will not admit it.
Next time, I'm buying a Stihl.

Don't buy warranty, you have to go thru to much trouble to get another one from manufacturer not tractor supply. Please note that these saws cannot be adjusted, their fuel mixture screws cannot be adjusted with a screw driver, and the chain will not stay tight, no matter how long you use it for. And the plastic has a reputation for catching on fire if you use it too long. These saws aren't worth $20, and they're sold for $200. DO NOT BUY A POULAN.
