What Happens Inside a Pupa(Chrysalis)?

  • After the pupa period, caterpillars face tremendous changes in their bodies!
    What is going on inside the pupa?
    Today, I brought the eggs of butterfly to show you how a pupa turns into a butterfly.
    Shockingly, however, most of the internal organs inside the early-stage pupa exist in a liquid form.
    This state is also expressed as ‘protein soup’.
    This is because most of the larva melt inside the pupa, and then the adult body is reconstructed....

    But does the butterfly remember it's larvae life?

  • @BritishEngineer
    @BritishEngineer Před rokem +12

    No, a caterpillar does not retain its memory through the process of metamorphosis. Metamorphosis is a dramatic transformation that occurs in many insects, including butterflies and moths. During this process, a caterpillar undergoes significant physiological and structural changes to become a butterfly or moth.
    As the caterpillar enters the pupal stage, it forms a protective casing called a chrysalis (in butterflies) or a cocoon (in moths). Inside this casing, the caterpillar's body undergoes a complete restructuring, including the breakdown and reorganization of its tissues, organs, and nervous system. This restructuring involves the development of entirely new structures, such as wings, antennae, and adult reproductive organs.
    During this transformation, the caterpillar essentially dissolves into a kind of soup-like substance, and many of its cells are broken down and reassembled into new cells. As a result, the neural connections and memories stored in the caterpillar's brain are lost. When the butterfly or moth emerges from the chrysalis or cocoon, it essentially has a new set of neural connections and lacks the memories and experiences of its time as a caterpillar.
    Therefore, while the adult butterfly or moth may possess instincts and behaviors that are essential for survival, any memory or learned experiences from the caterpillar stage do not carry over into its adult form.

      @@BritishEngineerAre you certain that butterflies and moths don't retain memories prior to pupation? I've seen quite a number of articles stating that they do. For example, one study trained tobacco hornworms to associate a specific smell with an electric shock and thus become averse to it, and they retained the aversion after they matured into moths (though it's important to note that only caterpillars exposed to the smell in the late stage of development, the fifth instar, retained the aversion and the ones exposed at a younger age seemed to forget).
