What is going on inside the pupa?
Today, I brought the eggs of butterfly to show you how a pupa turns into a butterfly.
Shockingly, however, most of the internal organs inside the early-stage pupa exist in a liquid form.
This state is also expressed as ‘protein soup’.
This is because most of the larva melt inside the pupa, and then the adult body is reconstructed....

So it basically dies and it's parts are used to construct another organism.

For example, one study trained tobacco hornworms to associate a specific smell with an electric shock and thus become averse to it, and they retained the aversion after they matured into moths (though it's important to note that only caterpillars exposed to the smell in the late stage of development, the fifth instar, retained the aversion and the ones exposed at a younger age seemed to forget).
