Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart (26 July 1791 -- 29 July 1844) was the youngest child of six born to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his wife Constanze. He was a composer, pianist, conductor, and teacher whose musical style was an early Romanticism, heavily influenced by his father's mature style.

I have never heard of Mozart's son's music until today. I must say that I am stunned at the depth of this music. The Orchestration sounded glorious...but the Piano part that Franz created was so beautiful...it sounded like Mozart meets Beethoven at first and added with Chopin. This is BRILLIANT!
Funny; i also listened to W.A.M's son's music the first time tonight. And along listening, thinking of the simularity to his fathers music, to Beethoven and to Chopin. This was really a great discovery for me. Spitzenklasse.

What a revelation! For years I didn't listen to F. X. Mozart because of the sneering dismissal of so called experts. Now I find this lovely piece clearly by a virtuoso pianist, a very competent orchestrator and a composer of no small talent. As for the accusation that he is "just imitating his father", to me his style is exactly of its time, and compares well to Hummel or Spohr at least, even if not quite up to Schubert or Beethoven. It is worth noting a that set of variations by Mozart jnr. was mis-attributed to Liszt, and the mistake not discovered until 1994. Surely he can't be that bad if his work was accepted as that of one of the 19th century's greatest pianist/composers for nearly 200 years? I look forward to listening to more of this sadly underrated composer.

I agree. This is very listenable and enjoyable on its own terms. Play it for someone who doesn't know who composed it and he or she will spend the whole time trying to guess which great early Romantic composer wrote it. What a surprise when they find out who it is!

To those saying he is "just imitating his father" I say just replace 'father' with 'genius' and it wouldn't be a bad thing to do, would it?
He was born in the year Wolfgang died. The following epitaph was etched on Franz' tombstone: "May the name of his father be his epitaph, as his veneration for him was the essence of his life." The slow movement of this concerto hints at times at Mozart's 23rd Concerto and almost sounds like a reminiscence of his father's work. The concerto on the whole is a fun work, sunny and sparkling.

Ich kann mich nur wiederholen, jedes dieser Konzerte ist ein unübertreffliches Meisterwerk für sich. Man kann hier keine "Qualitätsvergleiche" anstellen. Jeder Komponist ist eine eigene Persönlichkeit, hat seinen eigenen Stil und sein ureigenes Gefühl welches Ihm diese herrlichen Melodien eingibt. Jeder Komponist, den ich hier, bis jetzt, gehört hatte, berührte mein Inneres, und stimmte mich mit seiner Musik ein. Daher ist, für mich, Jeder davon gleich groß in der Kunst wunderbare Musik zu schreiben. Mozart Senj. schrieb wunderbare Weisen - sein Sohn auch ebenso. Der Vater ist noch mehr der Barockzeit, der Sohn schon der kommenden Romantik verhaftet. Jeder für sich ist einmalig und lebte in einer einmaligen Zeit. Ich muß zu meiner Schande gestehen, daß mich die, sogenannte ernste, Musik unserer Zeit, weder beeindrucken noch gefühlsmäßig berühren kann.
Finde ich auch. Manchmal muss man einen Schritt rückwärts gehen, um wieder vorwärts zu kommen. Das hat die sog. "Moderne Klassik" m.E. nicht begriffen. Ich wünschte, F.X. Mozart hätte den Trotz gehabt, einfach sein Ding durchzuziehen.
@Carl Fromm Da ist ein Missverständnis entstanden. Ich hatte geglaubt, daß dieser Mozart der Sohn vom Wolfgang Amadeus sei, denn der hatte ja einen Sohn.
Von Bach ist bei mir doch keine Rede, und Mozart lebte noch in der Barockzeit. (Übergang vom Barock zum Rokoko, Maria Antoinette, Franz Revolution. ). W.A. Mozart lebte noch zu Maria Theresias Regierungszeit und das war noch Barockzeit. Man kann hier keinen harten Trennungsstrich machen sondern die Musik nach dem Zeitgefühl zuteilen. In dieser kurzen Zeitspanne Barock- Rokkoko- Frühromantik- Romantik, überschneiden sich oft die Stile. In Frankreich entstand das Empire, bei uns zeitgleich der Jugendstil. Man kann da schwer Vergleiche anstellen, da war alles sehr kurzlebig und überschnitt sich zeitgleich.

A lovely piece worthy of hearing. Franz inherited some of his father's gifts, However, bio states he felt unsure of himself a a musician compared to his father. Listen to his music independent of his father and it is very enjoyable. Father Mozart was unique in the history of music. His son made his own contributions

Yes, because J.N. Hummel was one of F.X.W. Mozart's teachers in his musical education, besides Salieri and others. You're right.
And, in addition, Hummel was one of the best pupils of W.A.Mozart!
This isn't as accomplished as Hummel's A-minor or B-minor concerti, or Weber's piano concerti. It's certainly not unpleasant but it's no masterpiece.
Hummel was a pupil of Mozart and even provided alternative cadenzas for 2 of Mozarts clavier concerti. Not very widely known.
The style of the piano passages is definitely more an early 19th C Romantic style than anything his father ever wrote. The passagework reminds me of Chopin at times. I think his father would have been very proud of his son, if he'd lived long enough to hear the premiere of this concerto. Its beautiful & a stunning performance also. Finding this has made my day. I wonder if that would have been the case. Do you think that Leopold was "proud" of his son and daughter? I find this hard to ascertain. I also find the work lovely and the performance stunning. J'ai toujours cru qu'il n'existait que deux Mozart, Léopold et Wolfgang et je me trompais. C'est peut-être quelque chose comme ce concerto que Wolfgang Mozart aurait pu composer s'il avait vécu 35 ans de plus. On n'y reconnaît pas le génie à proprement parler de son père mais ce concerto de Franz-Xaver est bien au-dessus de ce qu'on aurait pu supposer de la part du fils de Wolfgang...En tous cas pas moins valeureux que ce qu'ont pu composer les fils de Bach...Etonnant, prenant, réconfortant et finalement émouvant car un peu du talent du père a survécu dans l'ADN de son fils et atténue grandement la brutalité de la mort du grand Mozart. De Léopold à Franz-Xaver on peut reconnaître un trait de famille qui leur est vraiment commun, c'est d'avoir eu une vie de chien et d'avoir été traités plus bas que terre...C'est bien là la plus éclatante preuve de leurs génie à tous les trois...

For one, it is such a shame (but understandable being under his father's shadow) that he was so introverted. For the other, such a shame he never married and had children (just like his brother) because it left the world without direct lineage to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. I think this concerto is extremely beautiful and borne of genius that could only exist in the blood of the great W.A Mozart's offspring. While listening to this for the very first time I am reminded of young Beethoven, Weber, Clementi, et al not to mention hints of Chopin. Thanks for posting!

Genius and intelligence can be somewhat hereditary. But practice, free time, wealth and access to good education and resources is even more important. Whether the abilities of your children is due to their inborn gifts or superior upbringing and social environment can be hard to say. In any case, they are useless without opportunity and encouragement. Kings and queens are proof that the virtues of your ancestors do not necessarily make you any better at the task.

2:10 so dark and i dont know... jazzy!! underated and true artist!You hear through his music that he didnt want to force his success to make something popular.Following his father steps is actually a good thing in his music.He didnt meet him but he understood his soul and understood his own!he is continuing this beautiful way of musical sensitivity.It's like an own classical genre.I love discovering every new thing in Franz's music.Very suprising and fresh things.Some of them were ahead of its time sometimes for decades!

The only really important task is to perhaps play this concerto on an instrument in keeping with the contemporary setting. It wouldn’t do any harm. Using a modern piano is just side stepping the matter. I like this concerto, it reminds me of a mixture of both Beethoven and Mendelssohn.

I tried to hear his music forcing myself to forget who's son he was,so I realised that his piano concerto was really nice.
I think his music is much closer to Beethoven's than fis father's.
(If I was in his place I would change my name?). Why? What is important is the joy to create such a wonderful music without thinking the reputation. He"s rediscovered very lately, because of us who have no real musical taste, and depending only to so called experts. Shame !!

First 4 minutes is like pure classical Mozart. And then the piano section rolls in and suddenly you are hearing Chopin with some Beethoven thrown in. How interesting!

@@ashtongrey894 I beg you that don't do that kind of jokes. Wolfgang and Antonio were good friends in despite that silly movie could say. Mozart would feel sad somebody would tell something against his fellow and collaborator. Constance was always very receptive about Salieri's inclination to help the Mozart family and always respected him as Mozart's in the worst times helper. Even Mozart went for Salieri's advice for compose operas that "would be of the like of the people" due his management of that style was not so well done as he desired.

If you need proof that Salieri and OG Mozart were actually friends, friendly rivals at worst, realize that Franz Xaver Mozart was trained by none other than Salieri himself. If Salieri hated Mozart there was no way he would train his son.

Plenty of people in these comments find themselves obliged at making comparisons between this composer and other greats, especially his father. I suppose against Mozart at least that is inevitable. Regardless what one might say to the contrary, Franz Mozart was a first rate composer. Who here can say they have written a piano concerto of such magnitude?

A partir de um tema muito clássico, mais haydniano que mozarteano, eis que Franz Xaver compõe um extraordinário concerto, onde se ouvem ecos de Beethoven e Hummel e se antecipa Chopin (este ainda não nascera), embora o andamento lento incorpore o espírito paterno, que foi romântico no segundo andamento do Concerto 21. A ouvir mais vezes.

I love it. How did this escape me for so long? I think it's much better than most of the stuff Haydn ever wrote and it shows that FXW was really paying attention to the great pianists of his time. It's not supposed to be seen through the prism of father-son. It's Franz Xaver, and it's great music.
There is no comparison between Haydn and FX, an impossible choice. Why choose Haydn?
My lord, where did that comparison come from. It is indeed a lovely Piano concerto but why bring Haydn into it ? I suspect you have not heard much Haydn. His London symphonies, everyone a masterpiece of the highest order, is the culmination of the classical era. Try his string. quartets or maybe 'The Creation' and you will see what I mean. Wolfgang Mozart himself was not only very fond of Haydn but admired his compositions, so this is a very odd comparison.

Musicalmente, Mozart se ha comido a su propio padre y a su propio hijo. Si para el padre de Mozart era difícil llegar a competir con su hijo como compositor -aunque Leopold estaba orgulloso de su hijo- la parte más difícil fue para el hijo de Mozart intentar componer una sola nota bajo la sombra de su padre quien es considerado hoy como quizás el Dios de la música.
Es verdad que se puede escuchar en momentos a Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart y en momentos a Chopin en este concierto. Me encanta el hecho de que Salieri haya sido profesor de música del hijo de Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Franz Xaver Mozart lebte über 30 Jahre in Lemberg. (Lviv - Westukraine) Damals war Lemberg DIE Kulturhauptstadt Europas! F.X. Mozart war leider leider nicht allzu fleissig im Komponieren, was seine Mutter Constanze oft Grund dazu gab, bei ihrem anderen Sohn, Carl Thomas Mozart, zu bedauern. Es gibt auch noch das 2. Konzert in Es-Dur, welches ich persönlich aber nicht so "frei-komponiert empfinde". Hier in diesem Konzert Nr. 1 lebte F.X. Mozart frisch und unbelastet seine Gefühle aus.

In fact, father Mozart would’ve properly thought him how to inherent his son’s own classicism spirit. Well Leopold Mozart was Wolfgang’s own teacher as well, plus what better teacher a son can have have other than WA Mozart anyways. Franz clearly tried to implement his father’s own spirit in his music, but had no idea how to perfect it sadly. However, It sadly had to be forgotten & left behind, especially inside an evolving romantic era of music....
Don't forget: The young W.A. Mozart also was tutored by J.C. Bach! 🤔

I’m saddened that Franz Xaver, didn’t have anyone left from the old days to give him a proper Classical lesson! He is left all alone & abandoned in an unknown era of music. He didn’t last long in order to continue his father’s reminiscent. Well the only option he has was Haydn, in order to make him a more renown composer as the son!

I since found out the variations in question were supposed to have been written when Liszt was nine - so, a mis-attribution perhaps not so flattering for F. X. Mozart! Still if you hear the piece, it would have been pretty impressive for a nine-year-old - comparable to Mozart senior's precocity at the same age.

Che bel concerto! Si sente certo anche papà, ma soprattutto il pianismo del suo tempo, da Ries a Kalkbrenner, ma la felicità inventiva è senza dubbio superiore. Peccato che Franz Xaver si chiamasse Mozart! altrimenti sarebbe molto più considerato. In genere si dice che il figlio uccida il padre; in questo caso è il padre che (del tutto involontariamente, ovvio) ha messo in difficoltà il figlio.
Sentendo questo concerto (sentito già due volte) penso che Salieri avesse ragione... il talento di Mozart figlio poteva persino lasciar supporre che fosse in grado di eguagliare il padre...poi, per motivi misteriosi, non è riuscito ad essere altrettanto prolifico e efficace di papà Wolfgang (forse la stessa ombra paterna era destabilizzante da un punto di vista psicologico) ed è finito ingiustamente dimenticato. Ma questo concerto è una meraviglia.
Second movement sounds alot like Chopin, makes me wonder if Chopin played this as a kid.
