    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Filmmaking siblings Joel Coen and Ethan Coen both embraced and poked satirical fun at their Minnesotan roots with this comedy-drama-thriller that earned seven Oscar nominations, winning for Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay. Frances McDormand stars as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant police chief whose affable, folksy demeanor masks a whip-smart mind. When a pair of motorists are found slain not far from the corpse of a state trooper, Marge begins piecing together a case involving a pair of dopey would-be kidnappers, Carl (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear (Bergman stock player Peter Stormare). They've been hired by Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), a car salesman under the thumb of his wealthy, overbearing boss and father-in-law, Wade (Harve Presnell). Jerry's raised some money illegally through a petty scam he's run on General Motors and he's about to get caught. When Wade sours a business deal that could save his son-in-law's hide, the desperate Jerry hires Carl and Gaear to kidnap his wife and hold her for ransom. Things go predictably wrong and a series of murders occur, with Marge, waddling along behind her enormous belly and ever-hungering for an all-you-can-eat buffet, hot on the trail of the killers. Although the credits for Fargo state that the film is loosely based on real events, the story is entirely fictional, the claim being just an ironic jibe on the part of the Coens.

    I just noticed something in this scene; at the very beginning, on the Employee of the Month wall, nearly every picture is a closeup, with the men clearly showing their faces, making them look honest and approachable. The only exception is Jerry's, which shows him backed away from the camera with his arms crossed in front of him, using very closed-off and defensive body language. Even before we see him in person, the filmmakers are already planting the idea that Jerry is a cowardly worm. Brilliant movie! :D

They understand how important reels are to casting directors so they'll let these unknown actors be able to be seen and have their moment to shine as a reference for future jobs. And even within the scene they give as much respect and attention to these two actors as they do to William h. Macy. They'll never appear again for the rest of the film for this momentum day are the most important.

    I used to think Jerry lost this scene, but honestly, he made them pay $400. We see how he successfully manipulates people while feeling like a loser. It's how he sends everyone to their deaths with his scheme. The two kidnappers know immediately this is a bad job, there are details Jerry just isn't giving them, "Why aren't you just asking your wife for the money?" but unfortunately, Steve Buscemi's character ignores his instincts and goes ahead with the plan, probably feeling some faint feeling of pity for Jerry.

      There are so, so many points in this movie where you realize a single, inconspicuous action doomed them all. If Jean hadn't bit Graer, he wouldn't have stayed in the bathroom looking for medicine and she would have made it out of there. If Carl had changed the plates they wouldn't have been pulled over. If Wade had just handed over the money Carl would have gotten back before Graer killed Jean. There's COUNTLESS moments like this, and every last one of them is something endemic to the character who does it. It's not that things went perfectly wrong in a cosmic tragedy, it's that these people, who they are, meant they were doomed from the start.

    Lying is part of the job, or the whole job for some people, to the point where lying is what they do all the time now, and not just at work. It’s all over poor Jerry’s face. Good acting.

    This scene always comes to my mind whenever I am at a car dealership.

    This is literally all car dealers. "hold on, i'll go talk to the manager to see... blah blah blah"
    I wait 10 minutes, decide to go to the bath room. I walk by and see the dealer sales douche in the coffee area chatting with his buddies.
    Dealers are the biggest scammers

      I had an ‘i’ll ask the manager’ moment a few months back buying a car.
      The price was about right, but as I wasn’t paying credit, I asked if they could improve the price a bit.
      A ‘word with the manager’ came back no, so I asked if they’d throw in a trailer hitch with the deal.
      Another ‘word with the manager’ came back as yes, so I bought the car.
      Guess the salesman could see I wasn’t desperate to buy, and was willing to walk away.

    I love how his wife is mortified. She probably never heard him raise his voice. She almost seemed apologetic.

      I don't think she was apologetic. I think she was just as pissed off as her husband, but also realized that there's no point being overtly mad and just wanted to get it over with.

    Apparently this scene was based off a real life argument Joel Coen had with a car salesman. The dialogue is written almost verbatim from that conversation.

  • @nakfoor1846
    @nakfoor1846 Před rokem +6

    I always interpreted the meaning of this scene to show that Jerry completely lost control of the situation when it was just a nice couple coming to pick up their car. How was he going to successfully handle ripping off his father-in-law and two kidnappers?

    • @zyxwut321

      Excellent point. Jerry's a small fry all the way.

    • @drygnfyre
      @drygnfyre Před 6 měsíci

      It should also be noted that even IF every single part of Jerry's plan went off perfectly, he's still getting hit with fraud by GMAC. He can't just go "oops, sorry I lied about the cars existing, here's your $320k back!" He'd be charged with fraud, and Wade could actually lose his dealership (potentially).
      But of course, we realize how incompetent Jerry is. Didn't even get alternate contacts for his handlers. Didn't once assume Wade might not play along. Didn't assume GMAC would investigate when it is revealed Jerry lied about the cars. Seemingly had no backup plans at all for when things went wrong.

    Where's the deleted scene where the buyer discovers there never was any "true coat" but then says "F it!" and then cuts to Jerry smiling but in some other context.

    At a car dealership right now and the sales guy just went to ask his manager what he could do for us. And this scene was the first thing we thought of.
