Well, THAT was fun! Finally gotten around to watching interview tonight, down in NZ visiting 96yr old father. He's in hospital after a fall, with covid, still going strong; I've the house to myself and perfect opportunity to clear old 'watch later' list(he's got flash TV that beats my smartphone for viewing so I'm going to make the most of it!).. I needed cheering up after hospital tonight, and the sight towards the end of Richo squirming uncomfortably when Mark starts talking about Steven Wilson was EXACTLY what the doctors would have ordered! A treasure.
Had to come back to my phone in order to post this coz I don't have my old man's codes ; just wanted to get my congrats to both Mark and Rich for the interview before I move on to my next bit of viewing- because my next bit of viewing is gonna be Richo's interview with Steven Wilson! I am SO hoping to find Richo mentioning the Mark.P interview to Steven.W and seeing what he has to say about it!
The humour for me tonight was also magnified by having just rewatched the recent Splintered live footage and seeing RJ indulging in his own version of the 'dad dancing' phenomenon! Don't worry, Richo- it looked fine to me and I'm firmly on your side when it comes to you and Mark's disagreement about it. Why shouldn't we be indulging ourselves in a bit of physical expression to our music, no matter what it looks like to others? True freedom is freedom from the expectations of others! Live it up I say!
(Btw- re Mark worrying about being trapped by the framework of 'songs'; the folk he mentioned, TG, NWW and Whitehouse, all remain pretty much within those boundaries themselves! I wasjust listening to Whitehouse on my way to the supermarket today- sounded song-based to me!).
Right-Im off to see what Richo and SW have to say- then I've GOT to try to track down footage of Mark.P's cassette bonfire! Shades Drummond or WHAT? Brilliant. Not good for the environment though!
Pleased you enjoyed the convo, Don! Hope you like the SW one as well. Steven and Mark are very different to each other in many respects, but I'd contend there are similarities as well. I'm glad music allows room for both and far more besides who are driven by a kind of maverick spirit, anyway. Hope your father is okay. At 96 he sounds like he's made of strong stuff!
Any plans to release ATVs Direct Action on cd or digital format ? No longer have a deck to play vinyl on and self rip to mp3 etc, so pointless buying this on vinyl.
