My biggest failure as a logo designer

  • 😢 Not the result I was hoping for, but thank you to Dustin and the team at ‪@Draislv‬ for the opportunity. And what an opportunity it was. 🤩
A big part of me still thinks I blew this one, and I can’t help but think what might have been.
Would another designer under different circumstances have managed to convince Victor to move away from the logo he loves? I honestly don’t know.
Either way, I think it’s important that I share not just my success stories, but also my failures. Because it’s not always rainbows and butterflies and sometimes projects just don’t work out.
I’ll take this one on the chin, learn from it, and who knows, maybe I’ll get another crack at it in a few years. 😉

I feel like recently there has been a bit of a surge in rebrands. And many of these rebrands feel like the client had a decent budget, so designers (always chasing the bag, obviously) hop on and go to town on these brands - only, in a lot of cases they sacrifice a lot of their originality.
Which is why I love that you shared this story, because yeah. Some brands are just too strong to change, and sometimes less is more. BUT I don't think it's a "failure" per se, or that they "rejected" your ideas and your work. Sometimes clients are dumdums, other times we're dumdums, and sometimes it's as simple as a difference in creative vision with the client and there's not always common ground. There's nothing wrong with that imho

Thanks for sharing and being vulnerable enough to show your "failures." I put it in quotes because every perceived failure is packed with lessons and opportunities. Drai's is a tricky one. I probably would've just cleaned up the script and called it a day. Hard to mess with something so iconic.

Thanks for sharing your story, I never worked with big clients but I can relate so much to the guilt or "imposter syndrome" that comes with design projects

I've never seen this logo before... but that "super recognisable" D you talk about, looks a lot like... a big corporation focused in animation and theme parks, big ears? heard of it?

I thought the same thing. Drais is really well known in the music business and in Vegas. They have a lot of big artists perform there.

i work with a company that has been sporting a now 5 year old logo, and for the past 4 i've been trying different things to modernize or come up with a whole new design and it always made me feel bad that i just couldn't. it was only recently that i started to ponder the possibility that the logo is just the exact right fit for this particular business and my impostor syndrome let go a little bit, it was a real face to face moment between me and my profession that made me change the way i work. i'm still trying new stuff for them, bc u never know when u strike gold, but i'm not as desperate to create something revolutionary after seeing and accepting the current logo's true effectiveness. thank you james, a lot more people need to know that any contract can always sink or swim, that's just the nature of the job and we should never take it personal (us designers can be picky, but compared to the clients we don't hold up a candle lol) ❤

Hey James, hopefully this doesn’t come of the wrong way. I still feel like watching a TikTok (which is great). It’s straight to the point fast pace video with TONS of information (your signature style). Maybe you could try to add some workflow shots and other stuff like that for a youtube vid. (I love Will’s YT vids…😅😅)
But this is a GREAT case study, that taught me a lot as an upcoming logo designer. Thank you for sharing it!
edit: (idk if this was also the type
of response you were looking for, regarding the style of the vid)

Once I got very similar task, they wanted to change the color of the logo but keep the original ones. I changed, they asked to keep the original 3 colors again, so than I make a call and asked them how? So Imclosed that "deal".
