  • Painted Spurfowl (Galloperdix lunulata), length from 19 - 20 cm, weight from 2.2 - 3.4 lb
Adult males are brightly colored and have prominent dark white spots with black edges, and chestnut brown back and rump. The chest and lower abdomen are cowhide color with evenly spaced black spots.
The male's head and neck are black with a greenish sheen and have delicate white spots.
Males have two to four spurs on their lower legs.
Painted Spurfowl are found primarily in rocky and shrubby forest habitats, they are found in bushes in pairs or small groups, escaping predators by running to safe shelter
The Painted Spurfowl is unique in that it has no facialskin. Males have a black tail and ocher underparts that contrast with the darker upperparts.
Painted Spurfowl are found in rocky hills and scrub forests mainly in peninsular India.
They eat berries (Ziziphus oenoplia and Lantana camara), insects, flowers (Madhuca longifolia), they also eat seeds including corn kernels, rice grains and they often visit water holes to drink and dust-bathe for 5 - 10 minutes early in the morning.
The female has almost the same length and weight as the male, and its fur is mainly gray-brown in color, tending to be darker on the rump and tail.
The throat is light brown and has no white spots on the body.
The beak and legs are dark gray, and the female may have one or two spurs on her lower legs. The tail is sometimes erect.
Painted Spurfowl occurs in parts of the Aravalli range in Rajasthan, the hills of central India and the rocky hills and dry forest areas of south India.
They are also found in the Nallamala region in Andhra Pradesh Eastern Ghats.
The habitat is drier than that of the Red Spurfowl.
In the southern regions of India, they forage on rocky hills with steep slopes.
Painted Spurfowl are found in pairs or small family groups of 4 - 6 individuals and tend to stay in bushes, rarely flying.
The Painted Spurfowl breeding season is from February to June.
Courtship involves the male offering billed food to the hen. Painted Spurfowl is a genus that is believed to be monogamous.
The nest is a hole in the ground lined with leaves usually located underneath a rock. Each batch of females lays 3 - 4 light cream colored eggs.
The female usually incubates the eggs after feeding the chicks, but both parents care for the chicks.
Chicks develop in 1 - 2 months and can forage with adult chickens.
When they detect danger, they will use ways to distract predators away from the chicks.
