  • ** NB: NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED **
Andy Gray is a legendary music maker. Gray became one half of the Perfecto remix team with Paul Oakenfold to replace Steve Osborne, and they went on to remix Moby's "Natural Blues" and U2's "Beautiful Day" and compose the theme music for Big Brother UK under the name Elementfour.
In this, the first of a new series in which Crow Hill ventures to other music-maker's places of work to tour us through gear and their experiences at the coalface. Andy Gray tells us of a terrible disaster he suffered and how he and his family pulled through it and ended up in a place that was more productive and more creative and better insured!!!

@@AndyGrayedout what are the Cubase Macro buttons being displayed on? Looks like some kind of small touchscreen LED display. Your “anything playable at anytime without opening a DAW” is very similar to my setup. I use MOTU interfaces connected with AVB though. Really heartbreaking to see all that vintage gear fried but at least it was only things.

Sorry this happened to your studio! In October 2006 one morning I got a call from the singer of the band I was in at the time asking "Did you have any gear in the studio? because it's burned up." The rehearsal building we were in burned down due to a carpet factory next door going up in flames. We were lucky because we were on the ground floor and only had smoke and water damage from the fire fighters blasting hoses into the small window we had in the room. Only one amp didn't make it and that was solely because it was turned on before it hadn't dried out. All the other musicians in the building were affected. Most lost everything. It was horrible. One of them said how he lost his masters and his back ups. and that, has always made me think to keep them in separate places from then on!

I started on Cubase 3.1 about 25 years ago, then had Logic Gold on PC. Hmmm, got back into sound design & composing in 2020 via the free trial of Cubase Elements 10 onto Artist, then Pro11 and never looked back! Just upgraded to rock solid Cubase 13pro. Nothing I’ve used has come close to this amazing DAW. So user focussed and is an absolute beast in many ways!

Thank you, Christian and Andy; your video was an exercise in top-of-the-line vintage gear, streamlined workflow, and tech mania. Over the years, I've gone from Digital Performer to Logic (before it was logical - pre-Apple) and have landed using Protools for the past X years. Knowing that Cuebase has the depth needed for heavy lifting, I still can't bring myself to sit down and learn it. All this stands small compared to what I saw in the two of you, and that was the humble strength and love for creating you both have-well Done!

A beautiful space, light and airy.
Andy's xpander looks like it's in mint condition. Beautiful sounds and remarkably easy to program. It had quite snappy envelopes, so maybe it's one of the later ones that Gibson built when they acquired oberheim. The ones I've used were great for pads and complex modular drones, as they had less snappy envelopes. It's 6 part multi timbral, 6 voice (with 6 outputs), with c/v & gate AND MIDI . Basically They're half a matrix 12 sans keyboard.
    Thank you for uploading 👍

I remember, Phil Oaky , telling me that my matrix 12 wasn't as hard edged, sounding as an expander. I listen to him, and that's when I switched from a 12 to an expander, never look back.

Really impressive rebuild with a lot of smart working decisions.
I find the bit about missing EXS24 curious. I'd use Logic myself as a preferred sequencer but for the lack of a comprehensive sampler, that is, EXS24/Logic Sampler can only apply Filters and LFOs to the entire program, not on a sample or zone level. When they updated EXS24 into the newer Sampler I was most surprised to see they still had this limitation. If you use Kontakt, Falcon, MPC or Ableton's sampler, moving to Logic's built in Sampler presents you with a huge sound design limitation in that sense. It's funny how in 2024 we still have tools with peculiar limitations, for example the MPC hardware/software cannot use a free-running LFO so basically every LFO you use is retriggering with every key or pad press. Note to Akai - that's called an envelope where I come from 🤦‍♂

Going back some years I had all my gear in a studio building and the roof was ripped off in a heavy storm, but nothing inside was damaged amazingly. That was scary enough and I lost nothing. I can't imagine looking at flames and knowing what that means.

Please excuse my prior silly remarks. Andy.
I thought you were just a guy with gear, not necessarily a pro movie soundtrack man.
I too, went through the fire-everything electronic destroyed, mostly by fire hose water applied.
2 years later, F4 Tornado, right through my living room. 1905 House l, picked up like and toy, twisted and shredded and reduce to rubble-with me in it. Bad might.
It’s really wonderful to see how you’ve recovered and landed in such a nice place,
Speaks volumes about your nature and determination.

Would probably work on an M1 MacBook Pro as well with the RME interface. I’ve not had a single crash or glitch even running 32 samples at 0.5-4ms tracking when aggregated with an ES9 in Eurorack. He mentioned the RME mixer software which is amazing, especially with the ARC controller I noticed on his desk. It can route anything to anywhere. Not cheap but will last 20 years with excellent driver support.
