    No no, John, you gotta go full Derek!
    "So, this was a parts car...it's missin' stuff. So a fella's gonna do the right thing and pretend he didn't see that. And we're gonna fix it up and drive it 600 miles home. I'm sure it'll be fine. Nope. Gonna be a disaster.

    John tastes oil: "Yep, tastes like shit!"

    My step brother has a 79 Mustang that he found in a field and bought when he was 16. It had a 302 in it, but only ran on 6 cylinders and was totally rusted out. He and my stepdad got it on the road and he drove it for many years until it needed too much work. He put it into storage and worked on it as he had time and money and after another 20 years, finally got it back on the road again.

      no, it's 2.8L, I have the exact same car just a different color. They only had 2 V6's in 79, the 2.8L and the 3.3L. The 3.8 didn't even come out until 1982, and it replaced the 3.3L.

      Yeah, wrong instrument cluster, seats, wheels too, this wasn't a GT car. It would have been a v8 or turbo 4. The 79, especially the Indy Pace Car version, is I think the best looking of the Fox Mustangs. Performance got a lot better in later years, but they were nice looking, had the best front facia.

    Nice start to a project. I just bought a 79 2.8 V6 Mustang myself. Mine is Brown (Medium Chestnut Poly) with Brown interior with some 80's "outlaw" style wheels on it, mine runs and drives and only been off the road about 6 months, I live out here in the Southwest Triangle so the Paint, Dash and front seats are toast, I'm just going to rebuild the motor and trans, repaint it the original color because honestly I kinda dig it, I am going to change the interior color to tan, put some Enkei Wheels on it and put a Orange pinstipe on it. I'm not looking for a Torque Monster or that has 1, 000 Hp. I just want something I can daily drive and have fun with on the weekend cruising up to Vegas over to L.A. or Down to Phoenix/Tucson to a Cars and Coffee or car show.

    It's sucking in air somewhere besides the bottom venturis that why it needs lots of gas and revs. Vacuum leak at the base of the carb or maybe the power brake boost hose has a crack in it. Perbaps.

  • @FormulaBoat
    @FormulaBoat Před rokem

    Ha, that was my very first car. I don't think yours is a Cobra, as I think a Cobra would only have a V8 or turbo 4cyl (2.3L). The engine you have is the same as mine was, a 2.8L V6, which was made in Cologne, Germany. Decent engine, good solid Motorcraft carburetor, reliable setup, even in the winter. The cam drive is gear-to-gear, no timing chain, so it actually spins the cam opposite direction of the crankshaft. Crank is an iron gear, and the cam is an aluminum 3 spoke gear of twice the diameter, bevel teeth. There is a button spacer in the center of the crank pulley, that needs to come out first if you ever need to pull the crank pulley off. It looks like it is the end of the crank, but it is not. I overheated mine pulling a trailer, and put cold water in it before starting it, so I cracked both cylinder heads and had to replace them, so I had the front and top half of the engine apart to do so. Straight forward design. I only got it to peel rubber on pavement once single time. Not enough power to hurt itself, but it never left me walking.

    its a 2.8 with a weird EGR setup and some other strange things under the hood but this engine is a good daily driver. Good torque but slow. The Ranger/Bronco community made some pretty modified versions of this motor producing quite some power(190-200hp) so if it runs just run it. Works very well when there is the manual shiftbox behind it. 3speed auto turns it into a backroad cruiser
