I'm a medically retired volunteer firefighter. My first tone out was a MVA. The driver was DOA. I was tasked with extrication of the other occupant in the vehicle, which was a 2-3 day old child. As I was transferring the child to the strecher for medical transit, the child died in my arms. The incident happened on 09/16/2009. I still think about what kind of person that child would have ended up being. I cry quite frequently. I never had the opportunity to receive professional counseling. It was my companies policy. I stayed in until a medical incident happened to me on a structure fire search and rescue. I had a myocardial infarction (heart attack), caused by an undiagnosed cardiac condition known as Atrial Septal Defect. I did in fact have corrective surgery completed successfully. While I was in the recovery room, post-op DMV officials entered the room and basically said that I had 2 choices. 1) Surrender my operators license, and get it back after passing the physical exam Or 2) DMV revokes my driving privileges permanently.
