  • Ordos is the crappiest house in this game. One might argue about benefits of Fremen and sonic tanks, but deviators and saboteurs are useless. Can't construct rocket platforms either, only starport allows purchasing these important units.
    This map is same for all houses, except for locations of bases. First, the two sandworms in this map are disposed. One worm is trapped and shot by siege tanks and deviators are fed to the second one. Unfortunately, one siege tank had to be sacrificed there because of scouting hastily. Two forward bases with rocket turrets were constructed. Main assault base near Atreides got a repair facility. Most efficient route to Emperor's construction yards is through the Atreides base. Secondary assault base got a second heavy factory, in case enough units got destroyed in the main assault to lift the unit cap and allow more siege tanks. Harkonnen construction yards are easy to destroy from the left, instead of trying to get through the palace in the middle.
    This time should be easily improvable.

    I remember the key to ordos was the mass build to the limit siege tanks and then starport in a ton of launchers and more siege. If I recalled correctly, I roamed about 40 to 50 siege tanks right up each of their bases, as the unit limit doesn't apply with ordos star port.
    The only annoying thing was the sandworm and micromanaging so many tanks one by one.

At this moment, AI builds the refinery again and places it exactly where it was, just where my devastators are. And all I see is this refinery - no devastators! 800x3 = 2400 credits lost ))))))) that was VERY nice))))

    I genuinely thank you for this rather fast-tracked tactics (building fast with no concrete etc.), as I remember it took me around 1 hour to complete any of the last two missions (regardless of the House). Yet, it somehow feels you do what you do because you know the map layout very well.
    I wonder what your playing style would be on a map you're new to (randomly generated or something)

    • @bormisha
      @bormisha Před 2 lety +2

      There is a version of Dune called "Dune Dynasty" that uses the original engine but you can set up "Skirmish" games with randomly generated maps and multiple enemies with prebuilt bases. It's pretty challenging, as the enemies begin to attack you rather early. You have no time to build rocket turrets or factories to produce defense units. The only way I found to win those skirmishes is to build ordinary cannon turrets asap to hold the enemy. Under that cover, try to upgrade to rocket turrets, then build an army and win the game.

    Ahh, Ordos.... best joke ever, isn't it ? ^^
    anyway, just wanted to suggest to replace the factory or add a starport on your left outpost. This might be useful in other runs too, but is especially important with this house's dummy HVfactories.
    Btw, using the deviator bug is probably worth it. Just steal something cool (sonic tank ?) and send it through enemies with a pending attack order. Get a hit (IE retreive original owner), and confirm the order. You're done. Might be not that useful in speedrun, but in its original use, it was just insanely powerful. Not only were you able to take over units or buildings, this also gave the opportunity to stall your foes at max population cap with units stuck in their own base. It seems funny to me that this devious's house only worth is reached using an exploit. Kind of roleplay excess ;)
    --
    Oh, and speaking of "ordos roleplay", does anyone know how to get a free caryall ? I mean, sometimes, the one delivering a harvester decides to stay for free, which grants an enjoyable economy boost in early game. I always experienced this randomly, by "mistake", but wouldn't be surprised to learn it can be reproduced. I might do some experiments (or look for forums first ?) about it, since it would be cool to master that exploit (which, of course, works with every house). And useful for speedruns too, of course.

    • @einokeino303
      @einokeino303  Před 6 lety +1

      Shouldn't build HFs on Ordos, strategy in this one is not very good. Just a warm up getting back to playing this mission after a long pause, could probably take couple of minutes off easily. Ordos and Atreides are harder than Harkonnen on this one mostly because Emperor has two CYs and the extra one is positioned at a tough to get spot behind the palace. The Deviator bug doesn't work properly on this latest patch we've been running, but would definitely be worth experimenting if anyone is interested in playing Ordos.
      I've been contemplating about building a second starport at the front line, but it might not be very easy to pull off, because large buildings are often destroyed by enemy launchers. Besides, units go out of stock around the time enemy has depleted most of the extra lingering units on missile turrets. At the start of a rush it doesn't make a huge difference waiting for the last patch to arrive from the main base as backups, because you can only control so many units at a time anyway. It would take the requirement for zooming back to main base for units, but harvesters have to be babysitted at that point anyway, because they start going idle and have to be manually ordered after a while.
      I believe the free carryall can be obtained by ordering a harvester to return after building a refinery and ordering the harvester to return immediately before the carryall leaves. It doesn't stay around forever though, not 100% how it's calculated exactly.

    • @balmipour
      @balmipour Před 6 lety +2

      Just tried again deviators (I use 1.07), and I confirm they can be VERY useful for this last mission. Rushed blindly to the rigth for the sake of the POC, and (after one or two dozen rockets -- ok, deviators still ordosly incarnate failure, but...), I got my sonic tank. Sent it to the upper right yard. It's a bad choice, but was easy to aim (2*3 from the map's right corner). => Yard destroyed.
      With the next two quads, I got Atreide's WOR and yard. I also took a siege tank, and tried to aim for the 2nd imperial yard, but I think I missed it. This is where the sonic should have been sent.
      Anyway, this decided me to look for the level's maps, which I found on TASvideos.org. I createad a marked picture of yard's places. Just scroll vertically from your base to the right spot, and you can target them without having to go through the base defenses.
      Here's my illustration : evilpotatoe.free.fr/Landmarks%20for%20deviated%20units.png
      Btw, getting the yards is a step, but with a few more, at least for HV facts, one should be able to win this *really* fast and easily. Tamed units are really overpowered. Not only they reveal the enemy's bases and shoot down stragic objective, but they also remain idle once job's done, waiting for you to convert them again, which makes jobs and resource management a cake ;)
      There's a zillion reasons to complain about Ordos, but this bug alone makes me forgive everything else ^^

      Oh, and checking the level's map again, I just noticed that the harkonen base has no units. Just 3 devastators, which are easy as a pie to convert to your cause. Just tried it out and got the yards in two minutes with the leftmost one. I think a siege and a deviator can handle harkonens while the rest is used on the right part. Looks very promising :)

    • @einokeino303
      @einokeino303  Před 6 lety

      The second Emperor CY could be located precisely also in the fog by marking a spot on lower map and scrolling the map up. Probably need to capture one rocket or a sonic tank to get both. Siege tank is probably not going to cut it.

    "Ordos is the crappiest house in this game" - absolutely agree. In original version when you deviate enemy unit and command it to attack enemy structure even after it turned back this unit still executes last command. I downloaded version that works via DOSbox. In this version this feature doesn't work. Also when deviator fires it has only CHANCE to turn enemy unit on your side. This makes deviators more useless than ever!!! I didn't finish the game with this faction this time. Gameplay is awful without rocket tanks as you mentioned in your description.
    Anyway thanks for hee game.

The single player missions have been made so varied that I don’t feel that I get into that nice state of flow where time seems to disappear. I get taken out of it every time I have to rethink the approach to play the next level.

    @bokor281 Před 3 lety +4

    The last levels are not too hard with all 3 houses. You have to use some "glitches", lots of save and have to no how the AI works:
    - surround your repair facility, then the carryall will carry the flaming wehicle from the place it stands to the facility, and back
    - build a tight base, the enemy cannot enter
    - if you build a repair facility, or a heavy wehicle factory, the AI wants to attack those - put them backwards
    - build 3 turrets in front of your base
    - put 2-3 siege tanks in front of the turrets (3 steps away)
    - if the siege tanks attack the incoming enemies, they stop and attack back - the turrets will destroy them
    - Put some sonic tanks/deviators/rocket launchers to the first isle of rocks in front of your base - if they attack the incomming, they keep on going, do not attack back
    - if you build this defence, this becomes automatic, you can prepare your attack
    - If the deviator converts an enemy, attack an enemy structure - after giving the command, select the unit, and push the attack function, keep the target sign. After the enemy converts back, the attack command can be given. Destroy turrets, palaces.
    - If you are facing an enemy turret with a rocket launcher/sonic tank and you are both on the edge of the screen, your vehicle can attack the turret from that distance, but the turret cannot attack back
    - Use a lot of saves. The palace often misfires. Reload, until it hits the sand.
    - If you attack an enemy harvester with an infantry, or trooper, the harvester will follow the unit until it crushes it. Then the harvester stops. That enemy house will not produce anything after some minutes.
    After your defence is automatic, build 6-8 sonic tanks, 6 launchers and some devastators, or buy some rocket launchers from the starport. With those, you can attack the enemy face to face.

    How can one avoid the Starport being out of stock in every unit? I'm refering to having each unit in the Starport "in grey", unavailable. Sometimes I have the money but Starport brings nothing. Also Heavy Vehicle Factory makes no additional units. And sometimes frigate never arrives and the mark stays on zero.

    • @einokeino303
      @einokeino303  Před 2 lety +2

      Starport units are also bought by CPU as time advances and there's a limit on orderable units. Better try to get at least harvesters quickly. Then carryalls, rocket launchers and tanks or sieges. Limited number of units are allowed to be built on map, but starport orders can exceed it. Frigate arrival sounds like a bug, if you have free space around the building. 1.07 is the latest patch, you can check the version at the beginning menu screen.

    Mit dem Deviator kann man ganz leicht gewinnen, ohne auch nur einen eigenen Panzer zur gegnerischen Basis schicken zu müssen - oder nur wenige zum Schluss. Eine gegnerische Einheit mit dem Deviator angreifen und umwandeln. Sobald die Karte erkundet wurde und alle gegnerischen Gebäude entdeckt wurden, zielt man jetzt am besten auf nen Raketen Panzer. Diesen schickt man in die Nähe der gegnerischen Basis und abwarten. Einen Angriffsbefehl vorbereiten. Sobald der Tank sich wieder zurückverwandelt, kann man noch kurz einen letzten gewählten Befehl geben. Greife das Hauptgebäude an. Der Computer wird nun sein eigenes Fahrzeug so lange draufschießen lassen, bis es zerstört wird, ehe er es wieder los schickt.
    Das gleiche kann man auch mit angreifenden Panzern machen. Umwandeln, zurück schicken und auf der letzten Sekunde die Verteidigungspanzer angreifen. Die CPU wird sich nicht wehren - sind ja die eigenen Panzer. Man muss nur schnell handeln, wenn die Wirkung nach lässt. Und man muss vorher schon Attack geklickt haben. Sonst geht es nicht.
    Alternativ kann man auch alle Feinde einfach in die Wüste schicken und den Sandboden oder nen Felsen beschießen lassen, bis keine Panzer mehr vom Gegner kommen ( maximal Zahl )
    Dann hat man viel Ruhe :D

The only way I could finish it is a) building lines of rocket turrets in front of my base b) ordering as much units at starport as it's possible c) slowly move forward as attacks weaken. The last 2 buildings I destroyed having only 7 tanks (usual+siege) and 2 rocket launchers; no spice to harvest, no carryall units to take my damaged vehicles to the repair facility. Too bad it doesn't have multiple units selection. The game is amazing.

      There is a version of Dune 2 that has it. You can even make groups of vehicles with the numbers just like in C&C. I don't remember the name - but Google for it. It's fun 👍

      @@FloFloFlowable i think the absence of that luxury was intended, to point was to understand the children who played that game to feel how a dynasty is being created in a galactic civilisation. same with the concrete slabs mini game, both were intended if you dont like it play dune 2000 i recommend.

      @@arthurheidt6373 oh I love Dune 2, played it as a kid, even playing it today at times. Only thing that I don't like is that you have to click on each unit. This is why I posted this. Cheers

    You were lucky the missiles didn't hit your base........still, wouldn't have changed anything, because you only had refineries

      Yeah, missiles are one of the most important luck factors in the game. I never seem to hit with those myself, when playing Harkonnen.

    Too many tactical mistakes: First: Build more Harvesting Grounds in your Outposts, that the Spice can be harvested, where it is. Second: buy more Carrier Planes... They can get the tanks to the repair factory, or the harvesters back home. One was destroyed, and you did not get any others. Third: The outpost on the very far left site was built at a strategic bad point. Too far away from main base and too less ground to build propper buildings. If it is constructed to be a speed run, you are too less aggressive...

      Keen of you to notice that handicap setting :) One extra refinery at the beginning speeds up the beginning a bit, but considering how long this mission is, it doesn't help much in the long run. I believe starting credits were much more generous for all houses on an earlier patch.

      It always made sense to me, the Ordos are the rich kids across the lake at summer camp. But with worse tanks than everyone, a shitty ice planet and a smarmy mentat. The horrificaly fun ability to brainwash and destruct Devastators almost makes up for it though.

      although i did notice in this last playthrough as ordos i only got 1000 for the 9th level, now that i think about it the patch notes had something about it being "corrected"

      Missclick there between the quad and the siege tank. Funny how the game decided to pick the siege tank as a target even though cursor was closer to the quad.
