I first visited there on it's opening day in May of 1971. I was 13 years old. My uncle, Eugene "Doc" Lemmon (phonetically La-Mahn), actually picked the site of, named it "Magic Mountain" in 1969. In 1969 he was one of the VP's of Seaword Inc, and was the President of it, after it opened. He was only there in 1971 and 1972. It became Six Flags in 1979. As I type this, I have my uncle's original artist drawing of his giant Magic Mountain poster that he had in his office. I also have his original hard-hat that he wore, while the park was under construction. Thanks for your excellent historical perspective!!

Much like your Colossus story, my Colossus story is, at about 11 years old, my dad was trying to convince me to ride Colossus. I had much trepidation. I ended up letting my dad ride himself. When he was about to board he yelled over to me watching, to reconsider. I did. The operators and those in line were kind enough to let me come up. I ended up really enjoying the ride, I also had a good feeling from conquering a fear, and they gave me an “I rode Colossus” shirt pin. A very nice memory.
PS….as I got older I remember there being a sense of competition if both coasters were going up the hill at roughly the same time.
    Wooo Woooo Wooo!

Colossus is near and dear to my heart. It was the main reason to go to the park. I mean all of the roller coasters and rides were great but Colossus was the real draw. It really was the tallest and the fastest coaster in the park. I still remember the first time and that first drop! Even Twisted Colossus gives me that same Holy $hit .. WTF moment on that first drop! Back then Colossus had both trains going so we would race all the time! One side was always a little faster. I still remember the double up hill and that second turn was so fast I always was afraid we were going to fly off the tracks and that double down camel back before it was leveled out into a block brake. Colossus had some powerful floater airtime which is why we loved it so much. I don’t think many people remember this but the red and blue trains had names. One side was Thunder and the other Lightening! The two flags at the top of the lift hill represented the blue train and the other red. I wish Twisted had those two flags in blue and green. I know it’s sounds weird but I miss those two flags! I loved Colossus so much that I wasn’t even scared of that that steep drop but looked forward to it and those two flags waving in the breeze were the symbol of the excitement and thrills that were about to happen.
Honestly, if someone where to ask me about a time in my life or memory where I experienced pure joy, it would be when I was riding on Colossus. I would get my friends to ride it, even the ones who were afraid to! Even if they swore never to ride again I felt like I accomplished something by getting them to ride and experience it in the first place

Great America was a HUGE deal for us kids back in day. We didn't do much as a family as my parents couldn't afford to do a lot with seven kids. But each year, my dad would give my mom a day off and load all of the kids into the rusted Suburban with a big bag of sandwiches to go to Gurney, Illinois. Those trips were awesome! So from about 1978 to 1984, we would make that annual trip. What memories!

Thank you this was such a great video to watch. It's been so terribly cold here 48 degrees fahrenheit for weeks now with rain everyday in the southern part of Australia where I live. My first memory of the park was TRAUMA. There were some old-timey hand pumps located just past the entrance. You could either work on your pioneer muscles and pump water through or...if you were me...you could stick your finger in the mechanism and get it pinched, letting out a blood curdling scream (thereby sharing your trauma with your mother). Instead of heading into the park for a day o'fun, I was taken to first aid to make sure my finger wasn't broken and my parents weren't going to sue. My second, and only other memory from that day was the amazing smell of the candle dipping shop which ended up being my favorite thing about the park even once I got old enough to really appreciate the rides. Also, I'm glad one of us made it through that story about your dad. It was beautiful.

I was also pulled aside and taken into that lil outside security office.. I was harassed & videotaped.. I ended up winning a small lawsuit for that incident.... Crazy thing is they harassed me the very next time I went, after the lawsuit.. So I pulled the security Sgt to the side and I told him who I was and about the lawsuit.. He left for about 5 min, came back and was super nice & personally escorted me in, ahead of the normal crowd...

Six Flags in the 90's were some of the best times in my life! Does anyone remember the tree at the Flashback entrance where everyone would stick their chewed up gum on??? Right before you would enter, you'd stick your gum on it. My favorite to stick on it would be Bubblicious Hawaiian Punch flavor, cotton candy and Orange sherbert..
I also remember when sister was told to remove her earrings before boarding because it was so rough... She had 8 small hoops in each ear 😆.
Also the summer of 93' or 94' when Batman the ride opened up, i remember being in line with all my cousins (Soaked after Tidal Wave) on a hot Valencia summer, sharing a souvenier bottle filled with frozen lemonade... The Batman stuntshow was in full effect!
Man.... nothing could ever beat 90's Six Flags! No cell phones, hanging out with friends on your own, meeting girls, and watching the awesome Looney Tunes cartoons while waiting in line....

It’s interesting to hear these things. Although I was born on the west coast in Oregon, I grew up in Michigan and largely doing things in the east side of the country in the 80’s and 90’s, and have lived in the Orlando area now for 24 years as an amusement and theme park fan. So I have tons of memories at places like Disney World, Universal Orlando, Cedar Point, and a handful of one-offs like Holiday World, Kennywood, Michigan’s Adventure, Busch Gardens Tampa and Williamsburg, and Coney Island. But I have visited Disneyland twice out west, and have always wanted to visit Magic Mountain. I can completely see how it could be a place where people had similar memories and grew up loving.

I love this post, do you have any clips /history of the red tower ? We went in 1985 when at that time it was running . After that I never seemed to want to go in it again I think it was the fear of being in a elevator for so long . I would love to see what they have done to it .

I used to work at Six Flags in the 90's and would sit backwards when riding certain roller coasters (during test rides before they would open the park). My co- workers thought it was funny. Too bad we didn't have cameras with us to snap a photo.

My friends mom was gonna take me to cancun Mexico with them which included his stepsister who I was in love with and had the "PLAN" all laid out right up until my parents said, "Leaving the country with them, don't think so" I was so upset! 2 months after returning from the Mexico adventure his mother was arrested for imbezzling 12.6 million from the company she worked for! Really made me feel like "The Jefferson's" and missing my piece of the pie!

You totally described me when you were talking about standing in line with your Dad after he forced you to go on that Rollercoaster 🎢 and going to the park with your friends and not wanting to go on any of the rollercoasters. That's me. I'm terrified of anything that goes upside down cause i always think I'm gonna fall out and get killed lol. Plus i hate steep long drops that basically go straight down so you feel like you're about to fall out while your stomach is in your throat. I've been that way since i was a kid and even now that I'm almost 49 years old I'm still scared to go on those things. Tomorrow my Brother wants me to go with him to Carowinds here in North Carolina and he loves all those insane rollercoasters and i know he's gonna try and get me to go on them and I'll be trying to talk my way outta going on them all lol. I'll be thinking of you the whole time I'm being tortured. 😰🎢

I remember going while the Colossus was being built and then riding it the next time I was able to go. Another time I got to ride it backward. I was super sad when I heard they were dismantling it. I was in Tx by then, so I wasn't able to do a last ride. I'm not positive, but I think that spinning gravity ride where you stick to the walls was called the Spinnaker. Such great memories!

Hey Kurt, I'm really digging your channel. I've been binge watching your movie location videos. Would you consider doing one for The Wild Life? It was a 1984 movie directed by Art Linson and written by Cameron Crowe that starred Chris Penn, Lea Thompson, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Jenny Wright, Eric Stoltz, Rick Moranis and Randy Quaid. I figure since it's an 80s movie that was filmed in SoCal, this might be something you'd be interested in.
