If you’re a home owner, at one point or another an electrical outlet will probably have to be replaced. I’m not sure how this one got burnt out but it definitely needs to be changed. It’s pretty easy to do even if you’ve never done it before and I’ll show you step-by-step how to do it with some basic household tools. One of the things needed is a circuit tester. Start with a circuit tester to see if this is an active outlet. Then you'll have to take off the face plate before the real repair work begins. And turn off the circuit breaker before working on any wiring.
I bought a 10-pack of Leviton electrical outlets which was actually pretty inexpensive. You could just buy one but since this is a rental house I wanted some extras around in case I had more to replace. A pair of pliers and a screw driver is all that is needed for this DIY project.
Hopefully in this video I’ve been able to show you how easy it is to replace a bad outlet in your home. I’m not an electrician but I’ve replaced several of these since being a home owner. If this video was helpful please give me a thumbs up and don’t forget to hit the subscribe button so you won’t miss any of my weekly videos!

Thank you so much. My outlet blew out in my room and my dads room. I’m a 15 years old girl and I basically cannot survive without my PS4 and playing in the living room was not a option. He was thinking about getting someone to come and replace the outlets, but I decided on checking to see if I can do it myself, this really helped 😅.
I love that you took the initiave to problem solve. The number one rule in any project is safety first! With your mindset I see you going past the stars ✨✨✨ Awesome!

Short, sweet, and to the point. No vlog style trying to extend the video to boost your pocket depth. Love it brotha!
Hey! I’m really glad that you appreciate my tutorial! I always try to make my videos as concise as possible. No need for unrelated info making the video longer. Thanks for watching!
Right...no introduction of the family members
Damn such a great comment and no heart 😞.
My thoughts exactly.
Exactly. Tired of how to video where it’s 5 minutes of intro and 2 minutes of instruction.
Even the sockets were shocked at how clear and simple the instructions were ^^
Epic.
Ya baby!
D=
So simple you could burn your house down if you follow his directions.
Get out 😑
Thank you man, simple instructions, no stupid 1 minute intro. I appreciate this.
You’re welcome! I’m really glad my electrical outlet repair video was helpful! And yeah! I try to keep all my videos as short as possible. No need for any unrelated info like on a lot of other channels! And I know my viewers appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
@@TheRenderQ much needed content. Thanks for this buddy
I hate the intros, especially when the content isn't very helpful. This was excellent!

Thank you !!! Simple and straight to the point.
Something important to remember: black wires (on the right) will typically wrap around under the screw first then over the top, so that when you tighten the screw clockwise, it tightens the wire more instead of loosening it. For the white and ground wires on the left, wires wrap over the screw then under because again screw tightens clockwise.
Thanks for the additional information. There have been several comments about the wiring. I just place it back the way I found it. And this wiring was done by the home builder. This is from a rental house and the tenants just moved out. There have been a lot of tips in the comments and now I can go back in and put some of that advice to use. Thanks for watching!
@@TheRenderQ I just did the same way you did and put it all back together like it was but had to do some adjustments on the wires so they stay tight and not near the outlet box
Metal of course not plastic
I wish it was plastic
But you get what you can work with.
You inspired me to do that
Thank you.
This was the most complete instruction I have ever viewed on how to do a task. Easy to understand. I am off to buy what i need.

Hey you’re welcome! I’m really glad that my outlet replacement video was helpful! And yeah I understand what you mean about other videos! And your comment is 100% on point.!
@@TheRenderQ Question for ya,if you take your plate off & it doesn't have a ground wire at all does it matter?
As a young landlord who is just getting started, I appreciated this video! Just fixed two of my tenants dead outlets, seriously a huge help. Thank you!
Excellent! I’m glad my video helped! The outlet I changed in my video is also from a rental house. The tenants had hid the burnt outlet under a cover but as you can see it’s not difficult to change. Definitely saves money by doing it yourself! Thanks for watching!
I like your method of replacing one wire at a time.
Thanks! Since I don’t do this all the time reconnecting it one wire at a time helps me keep everything organized. Glad you enjoyed my video!
yeah
I've been waiting for SOMEONE in my house to replace a burnt outlet in my kitchen. Now that I know how easy it is, I'm just going to do it myself :-)
As simple as I thought it would be. Thank you. I have been waiting weeks for someone to help replace four old outlets in my place. Now I know I can do it myself.
Most of the people spend 5 minutes giving an update on their lives, another 5 minutes giving an explanation of the issue they had with electricity and then 30 minutes on how to DIY...😒
Thank you so much for being concisely, at the point! Very much appreciated!
Its like that when I want to find a recipie. I have to get through the whole life story of the persons before they do the recipe. It's super annoying.
One of the best step by step descriptions as to why specific actions are taken in the replacement process. Great video.
Watched several other videos before yours. Going one wire at a time was a smart idea. Unlike the others yours was right to the point. Step by step Short and Sweet.. I replaced my socket with no trouble at all. Thank You for posting!!
Perfect! Exactly what I was looking for. Simple, basic and clear instruction. I grew up watching my dad do all this but I was doubting myself because it's been a long time since I've seen it done. I'm in a duplex where my landlord takes forever to do anything.
Excellent! I’m glad my video was a refresher for you! Thanks for watching!
For future reference, you should always have your landlord reimburse you for whatever repairs you do. Just make sure you keep your receipts.
I am a homeowner I didn't want to call an election to replace 2 outlets.thank you for this video.to the point step by step.Im going to replace both of them today.this video saved me money.
Excellent! I’m glad my outlet replacement tutorial was helpful! Definitely save money doing it yourself! I’m sure it helps watching someone do it first! Thanks for watching!
Love this format. Simple, informative, no BGM, no fluff.
This is just what I needed. Thank you so much for straight to the point instructions. I am helping my daughter with her rental, so I get to go change a few outlets. Again, thank you!
You made this quick and straight to the point, best way to do it!
i love how concise and clear this was. good stuff!

Thanks man! Electricity makes me nervous!
Bruhhh you are extremely underrated
Hey thanks! I’m really glad you enjoyed my AC outlet replacement tutorial!
@@TheRenderQ No problem man.
Hope I can do it! I like your simple approach of one at a time.
I'm about to do this myself! I too have watched it done in person but wanted a refresher because I'm nervous. I watched this first, then a couple of others, and this is the best and simplest of the instructions. I'm not trying to die today! I'll update on how it goes!
are you dead
Thanks for not wasting our time :-) Good tutorial.
This was so nice and easy to understand. you even explained any difficulties a person might run into during this and how to overcome them. Thank you so much! I'm in the process of buying my first home and a lot of my outlets in one particular room need a "facelift" with cracked face plates.
Edit: even when it was something that you'd already done before you still explained and showed yourself doing that. That's so hard to come by in instructional videos. They'll say, "oh it's the same as the ones before." then cut to the next part and suddenly you're noticing something else in the background or another detail seems different and you're worried you might have missed something. this is awesome!
You’re welcome! Glad my outlet replacement tutorial was easy to follow! And congrats on your new home! Outlets often go unnoticed unless they’re broken or ugly! But now you know how to replace them! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for how simple this is! My boyfriend and I just moved into a rental house and all the upstairs outlets are so loose it's actually caused my surge protector for my PC to fall out of the wall twice and now I'm researching how to replace outlets lol. Definitely doing this myself soon.
You made me grow a pair; thanks for explaining with excellent tips tricks. I will get a tester and follow all your very clear instructions; thanks so much brother. Stay healthy and strong!!!
You made it very easy to your viewers in replacing the outlet, Thumbs up.
thank you! I work nights and was tired and needed a reminder...perfect!
duuuude!! you sound EXACTLY like jack handy from saturday night live. the resemblance really is uncanny.
thanks for this video. you got me right where I needed to be with this simple process.... & now I have a fresh outlet. my very first kidney change. yaaaay!!
Thanks, 15 here and with a bad outlet in the living room with a smell coming from it and a family that's too busy to do anything about it, I thought I could get it but overconfidence isn't something you want with stuff like this.. wanted to double check myself and this was just perfectly concise to do it without taking all day or getting a shocker. I won't go into it since it's already in nearly every comment but definitely important to remember the way the wires are supposed to hook, so it doesn't loosen when you tighten the screw, I think I remember that from a Technology Connections video. Gotta love that Alec.
Thank you! I had a space heater that burnt out an outlet and this is exactly what I needed to fix it
Yes thank you for making it so simple and to the point. This is the first time I've ever been able to find the products box to order from Amazon not even sure how I got there but I did. Thank you again.
You’re welcome! I’m really glad my outlet replacement tutorial was helpful! Hopefully you found where to buy the replacement outlets from my description. I try to list the parts I use there so viewers are able to find them. Also thanks for subscribing! I really appreciate it!
Great & helpful video. One of my sockets was not working properly. The top would not work, but the bottom one had power. I followed this video and when I removed the outlet from the wall, I noticed the top white wire was a little loose and not as tight. There were no signs of burnt, discoloration, or wear & tear. I made sure that loose screw was on snug/tight. It turned out to be the problem and it's working again.
One of the best instructional videos on CZcams ~ Thanks!
Solid Audio, muffled background, simple Wording and Direction. best way to learn
great video, straight to the point and very great suggestion to do one wire at a time!
Short. Direct. And pretty common sense step by step. Subbed.
Just found the space heater (which I'm trashing) burned my outlet. Glad I found your video - was easy to follow. Doing this tomorrow. Have subscribed to your channel. Thanks!
That is the clearest presentation I've ever seen. thanks, tracy
Exactly what I needed. Very Helpful!
Thanks for keeping it simple. Very easy to emulate.👌
Great instructional video, I will attempt this over the weekend to replace my old outlet.
This was incredible! Great quality and super helpful! Love it!!
Great video but too much copper exposed on the wire connecting to the terminal screws. It shouldn't extend past the screw especially past the back of the outlet.
Good way to show the process, easy to follow. Thank you
I agree with others claiming how great the video is - precise, straight-to-the-point and no-nonsense. Since time is money, your candidness is much appreciated. I was just wondering if the GFCI is replaced in the same manner. Can someone comment on that, PLEASE??
I have not changed a GFCI outlet myself but I would imagine the process should be the same. Now you got me thinking I need to open up a GFCI outlet and see what wires are in there!
Thanks a bunch! I'm a first time homeowner, and I have a lot of outlets I want to replace.
Thanks! You made this super easy and answered my other question about how to level a faceplate! Good blessing!👍
Excellent! Really glad my outlet replacement tutorial was helpful! Thanks for watching!
This is the best tutorial I’ve ever seen. Thank you so much!!
Thank you for this, after a storm h afew branches fell on my power line, most of my outlets blew out. Burnt out two of my flat-screen tvs alswell as other appliances. Very informative!!!
Ohh no!!!
Hope your ok and gotten them replaced!!!

This was very helpful.
I'm a property manager & doing remodel, staging, interior design as well. But my electrician is put of reach & I needed to finish few things at few remodel properties I manage. One of the task is change outlet & switches to white. So, this was very helpful. Now I know, I don't have yo ge rocket science to do this!
Very clear instructions thank you, you give me a lot of confidence that I can do this safely.
Best 1-2-3 how to do it right video for a how do you do that, for a regular person who done this before I learned a new way to do it safer and even better. Thanks
You’re welcome! I’m glad my instructions were easy to follow for replacing an electrical outlet! Thanks for watching!

You’re welcome! I’m glad my outlet replacement tutorial was easy to follow! Thanks for watching!
Thank you!!!!!!! This is the only grounded to grounded I could find, so thank you!!!
I don't why this popped up in my recommended, but I'm glad it did; your voice closely resembles that of James Woods, so this tutorial is all the more epic because of said fact.
Wow! You’re the 2nd person today commenting that I sound like James Woods but on a different video! I am going to have to watch some of his movies to compare! Thanks for watching!
Thanks! Some guy wanted to charge me 300$ to change out 5 of them ( I bought the materials)
I like this way much better. Thank you for recording and sharing so clearly. Never learned any of this growing up. Its never to late for females to learn. Thank you
I can do this because you made it very explanatory! Thank you!
Great video, exactly what I needed to know in order to replace several outlets. I literally was going to start without turning off the breaker!! Glad I watched your video lmao
LOL yikes. Glad you're all good now!
Thanks boss. Today replaced mine such satisfaction. All credit to ur simple instructions
I work at a motel and we just fired our maintenance guy. This helped me. I didn't know it was this easy. My only problem is finding the circuit breaker box and then finding the room switch.
That is great to hear! This is a skill that will help out with your motel business! I’m sure you’re probably going to hire another maintenance guy but If you ever find yourself without one this will be a task you could do yourself if needed! Thanks for watching!
Thank you! This was so helpful.
Perfect video of “How to” and I feel confident. Now I’m wondering what type of replacement to buy. Should all be grounded? Thanks so much!
Straight to the point! Great video!
So good, haven't seen this technique before and it's fool proof.
I’m here because I don’t have a dad to teach me
Hope this video was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Lol you got worthless yuppies for parents like me?
Wow. Definitely doing this next weekend. You saved me lots of money from not hiring a contractor. Peace of mind too
Yeah! Changing an outlet isn’t very difficult. I’m glad you found my tutorial! Just make sure the power is off before you start. No need to pay an electrician for this! Thanks for watching!
Very good intro!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. Straight to the point.
Really glad my outlet replacement video helped! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the great straight forward instructional
Thank you I'm definitely going to change mine out just because all my outlets are crappy anything I plug in falls out not tight enough will go out to home depot tomorrow thanks 🙏🏼
Thank you for easily explaining it. I'm repainting one of my rooms, removed the faced plates, and noticed a burn spot underneath. My outlets are extremely old, and they should be replaced for safety reasons.
Thank you fo the helpful video!! Now i can plug my lawnmower charging base in once I swap the outside outlet!!
You’re welcome! I’m really glad that my outlet replacement tutorial was helpful!
Ty! I've always been afraid to touch an outlet. Lol. You made this really simple❤❤❤
Saw in another video that any screws not being used are tightened to avoid contact with the metal box. Another point, that the ground opening on the socket should always be closest to the floor so if via gravity the plug loosens the ground connection is maintained till the plug falls out. This was the way he did it , but it needs reminding.
The last time I had a receptacle turn black was a failed appliance plug, but certainly worthwhile testing and inspecting the wiring
Also it seemed like he was changing a Kitchen outlet and here in Canada the top and bottom section of the socket in most kitchen outlets are separately wired with a 220 V lead 120 to top and 120 to bottom each outlet good for 15A You have to break and twist off the copper interconnection on the receptacle on the feed or hot side. The smaller slot on the front of the receptacle is the hot side. You'll notice that the two breakers for kitchen outlets are linked and move together.
I'm not a professional, just an electronics, electrical, computer hobbyist.
Great walkthrough with the attention to detail 👍
And now I can save $125 by doing this myself. Thank you for clear and easy instructions.
Thank you for showing me that and making it simply easy I'm a little shaky about it but I'm going to try it
I was at first time too and it was the first time I replaced one and I replaced ceiling fans and I was scared as hell about it and pace the house for 2 hours before I got the nerve to replace them I shut the power off before I did anything.🙂
Easy to follow instructions. Great video
After having a horrible experience with a very bad and insulting electrician company, I never wanted to bother with one since. We have an outlet that was burned out (from previous owners), that we never got around to fixing. I've always been nervous working with anything electricity related, so I just left it be and put a bookshelf in front of it, as to not be accidentally used. It's been five years since we moved in and now that we're remodeling, I need that particular socket fixed. I thank you for saving us money and making this video very easy for worriers like me 😂 Now, I can easily replace it 😊
Thanks for this easy step by step demonstration and explanation!
You’re welcome! Glad my outlet replacement tutorial was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Thank you man for the video now that I can now know what to do whenever I have to change one
I replaced my 1st outlet today. Mine had electrical tape over the wires and screws so I replaced. Good video.
Nothing wrong with that
I'm going to attempt this this weekend. Wish me luck!
Instructions weere clear and easy to follow. Thank You so much!
Amazing video. You just made me have the confidence to try and do this myself. I have outlets that are no longer in use because of needing to be replaced for years, just haven't been able to afford hiring someone. Thank you so much for making this!! 🤞🏻 for me.
Hey! You should be able to change an outlet following my video! Of course the most important thing to do is turn off the power to the room you’re working in. You’ll definitely save money doing this yourself! Thanks for watching!
