    If you’re a home owner, at one point or another an electrical outlet will probably have to be replaced. I’m not sure how this one got burnt out but it definitely needs to be changed. It’s pretty easy to do even if you’ve never done it before and I’ll show you step-by-step how to do it with some basic household tools. One of the things needed is a circuit tester. Start with a circuit tester to see if this is an active outlet. Then you'll have to take off the face plate before the real repair work begins. And turn off the circuit breaker before working on any wiring.
    I bought a 10-pack of Leviton electrical outlets which was actually pretty inexpensive. You could just buy one but since this is a rental house I wanted some extras around in case I had more to replace. A pair of pliers and a screw driver is all that is needed for this DIY project.
    Hopefully in this video I’ve been able to show you how easy it is to replace a bad outlet in your home. I’m not an electrician but I’ve replaced several of these since being a home owner. If this video was helpful please give me a thumbs up and don’t forget to hit the subscribe button so you won’t miss any of my weekly videos!

    Thank you so much. My outlet blew out in my room and my dads room. I’m a 15 years old girl and I basically cannot survive without my PS4 and playing in the living room was not a option. He was thinking about getting someone to come and replace the outlets, but I decided on checking to see if I can do it myself, this really helped 😅.

    Something important to remember: black wires (on the right) will typically wrap around under the screw first then over the top, so that when you tighten the screw clockwise, it tightens the wire more instead of loosening it. For the white and ground wires on the left, wires wrap over the screw then under because again screw tightens clockwise.

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  Před rokem +8

      Thanks for the additional information. There have been several comments about the wiring. I just place it back the way I found it. And this wiring was done by the home builder. This is from a rental house and the tenants just moved out. There have been a lot of tips in the comments and now I can go back in and put some of that advice to use. Thanks for watching!

    Edit: even when it was something that you'd already done before you still explained and showed yourself doing that. That's so hard to come by in instructional videos. They'll say, "oh it's the same as the ones before." then cut to the next part and suddenly you're noticing something else in the background or another detail seems different and you're worried you might have missed something. this is awesome!

    Thanks, 15 here and with a bad outlet in the living room with a smell coming from it and a family that's too busy to do anything about it, I thought I could get it but overconfidence isn't something you want with stuff like this.. wanted to double check myself and this was just perfectly concise to do it without taking all day or getting a shocker. I won't go into it since it's already in nearly every comment but definitely important to remember the way the wires are supposed to hook, so it doesn't loosen when you tighten the screw, I think I remember that from a Technology Connections video. Gotta love that Alec.

I followed this video and when I removed the outlet from the wall, I noticed the top white wire was a little loose and not as tight. There were no signs of burnt, discoloration, or wear & tear. I made sure that loose screw was on snug/tight. It turned out to be the problem and it's working again.

    Thank you for easily explaining it. I'm repainting one of my rooms, removed the faced plates, and noticed a burn spot underneath. My outlets are extremely old, and they should be replaced for safety reasons.

    Saw in another video that any screws not being used are tightened to avoid contact with the metal box. Another point, that the ground opening on the socket should always be closest to the floor so if via gravity the plug loosens the ground connection is maintained till the plug falls out.This was the way he did it , but it needs reminding.
    The last time I had a receptacle turn black was a failed appliance plug, but certainly worthwhile testing and inspecting the wiring
    Also it seemed like he was changing a Kitchen outlet and here in Canada the top and bottom section of the socket in most kitchen outlets are separately wired with a 220 V lead 120 to top and 120 to bottom each outlet good for 15A You have to break and twist off the copper interconnection on the receptacle on the feed or hot side. The smaller slot on the front of the receptacle is the hot side. You'll notice that the two breakers for kitchen outlets are linked and move together.
    I'm not a professional, just an electronics,electrical, computer hobbyist.

    After having a horrible experience with a very bad and insulting electrician company, I never wanted to bother with one since. We have an outlet that was burned out (from previous owners), that we never got around to fixing. I've always been nervous working with anything electricity related, so I just left it be and put a bookshelf in front of it, as to not be accidentally used. It's been five years since we moved in and now that we're remodeling, I need that particular socket fixed. I thank you for saving us money and making this video very easy for worriers like me 😂 Now, I can easily replace it 😊
