2 Allen Edmonds: From Grimy to Gleaming! (Inspect, condition, & polish)

- In this video I take 2 old dingy neglected pairs of Allen Edmonds shoes, and do an 8 step process to inspect, clean, condition, polish, and spit shine them to their former glory. The point of this video is NOT a "product highlight" (I'm not here to promote certain brands over others) but rather to:
1. Educate people on what to look for (what is repairable) and what is not salvagable.
2. To show you a basic process to not just make the leather look great, but to protect it and help it last for decades.
I'm an amateur doing this for fun, and I realize there are many other ways of doing this, and I'm sure some products are better, so I hope you still are entertained and/or learn something from this.

Detailed shoe care! That feeling of turning rusty, neglected leather shoes into something nice is therapeutic! I'm waiting for my pair of AE McAllisters in Merlot that I got from ebay to do the same routine.
Of all the numerous vids i've seen on show care, yours are the ones that are actually instructive. While others focus on playing the dandy or sort talking into a sort pf lullaby, you actually point out important details and nuances that helped me actually emulate the results you and others show. #0000 steel wool lubricated with wax removes scuffs, yet doesn’t leave scratches.
I bought a thrift store pair of Imperials for $11. Big, clunky, stiff and hard by today’s standards. They cleaned up nicely but have a strange rough edge around the top edge of the sole, as though the leather‘s being eaten by some kind of mold or fungus. Still haven’t had them resoled, which should fix the problem.
Love your vids. You can buy a light kit on Amazon for $59. That would allow us to see your work and the textures and colors much better.

I’m not sure if you’ve used them before, but I have NO idea what I’d be looking for in this department.
I wish I had the luck some people do when thrift store shopping in my area I can never find my size 12eee as a man with really wide feet like yourself, always online and never at those prices.
Persio Vega yeah, In our area it seems like the “bell shaped curve” cuts off at 11 to 12, and wider widths are obviously rarer. It’s like when you hit 11-1/2 to 12 wide you’re in the “big and tall” department, so to speak. Those medium brown Byrons in the video were size 13B by the way, they’re the same ones I clean up in the “Grimy to Gleaming” video released just before this one.
I just ordered a pair of Allen Edmunds in 12 eee wide, they retailed for 600, I paid 125! Keep looking friend the deals are out there. Check eBay routinely until your size and style pop up.

Is it possible to get that mirror shine in corrected leather... I just bought a pair of AE and I think I should pair more attention on the ebay pictures, they were too glossy!! Let's see if I got lucky or not!
fishmemmo yes, but from my experience it’s harder to achieve on corrected grain.
Why not mix two different tones of Saphir cream to get the desired color? Like a painter's palette?

Robert, Does Saphir shoe polish smell? I bought a shoe polish recently, and it smells so bad that I was smelling it all day and even half a day the next day. Please advise. Thank you!
Beautifulmusiclistnr that’s odd... I’d say the smell is the most pleasing of all the shoe polishes I’ve ever used. It has a strong pine smell. Maybe take it to a local cobbler or high end shoe store and see what someone there well versed with polishing shoes says. It seems unlikely that it’s gone bad, but I guess anything is possible.
@@CobblerBob Robert, although you answered my question, you misunderstood what I said. Let's break out what I asked you. "Robert, Does Saphir shoe polish smell? That is a stand alone question, and based on your response, Saphir doesn't have a bad smell. Then, I said "I bought a shoe polish recently (I said I bought A shoe polish. It wasn't Saphir, but it was a smelly cheap shoe polish that really stunk!). Again, you answered my question about Saphir. The brand I bought was Giant, but I think Kiwi smells also as I recall. Thank you!
Ok, yes I wasn’t clear on what you were asking. Saphir has a great pleasant natural smell. Like I said above, the predominant smell is Pine. I haven’t used Giant polish, but in comparison Kiwi doesn’t smell BAD, but smells more unnatural than Saphir, more of a solvent smell. It seems to me making shoe polish is probably a lot like making food in the sense that when you cut corners to get a cheaper end product on making food, one of the first things companies do is get cheaper raw material. I’d guess that with shoe polish, a man made chemical compound is cheaper than natural materials like pine turpentine for example, that’s in Saphir. Shoe polish has a very immediate result (shine) and I’d also guess that whether or not the polish will nourish and increase the leather’s life or not is probably of no consideration to a cheap polish maker, and they’d probably take little consideration to using compounds that are not harmful to leather.

Yep. You're right. I do skip that step sometimes when the eyestay area of the uppers are in pretty good condition and the laces are black. I probably should be more disciplined with that when a thousand ppl are watching!

The shoe is beyond repair? Are you saying that they can't be polished or worn again? Shouldn't you remove the laces to work on the shoe?
Steve Oromaner - yes, it is usually better to remove the laces, but not always necessary. “Beyond repair” referred to those black wingtip Florsheims. Those were beyond repair. The leather uppers were severely cracked all over. They COULD be polished, but it would just further highlight the cracks, so I see no point. They’re not special enough to go to great lengths to save in my opinion.

gabriel ruiz I’m not sure what you mean... are you referring to my fingernails? My thumbnails just grow that way. It has nothing to do with cobbling. I may have damaged my cuticles years and years ago working on cars.

Rafał Gawędzki - LOL, if I only had a dollar for every time this comment came up! I can’t blame you for bringing it up though. I’ve addressed this in some later videos, but the short answer is I HAVE had it looked at by M.D.’s and it’s not a fungus, my cuticles were damaged. Sorry, it’s one of my flaws that’s not going away anytime soon. I hope it’s bearable and that my content will be good enough to keep your attention off of my thumbnails

Come on, it was dirty, not filthy, and I even said I found a clean spot! Besides they're relatively dark colored shoes, not like they're white or something.
Why invest the time to inspect the grain, when the determining factor to restore the shoe is based on whether there are cracks, deep abrasions or holes? As for the soles, most of Allen Edmonds shoes can be re-crafted; meaning the shoes can be re-soled. Allen Edmonds has an excellent re-crafting service that will provide a full resole job, condition the shoe leather and provide a new pair of laces. Kirby Allison also provides, what I believe is a better re-crafting service than Allen Edmonds. You can find excellent videos on both Allen Edmonds and Kirby Allison's services.Why not use the Saphir product line to restore the shoe? Using Kiwi leather lotion and then Saphir cream polish? The video is good, but your choice of products to restore the shoe is lacking.
oboy inflrida thanks for your input. I’m very familiar with both Recrafting services, thanks, and I also follow Steve Dudaklian at Bedo’s Leatherworks. Everybody has their own opinions on care. These were shoes I picked up at a thrift store for literally a few bucks to clean up and put on eBay. I think just the fact that I would use Saphir products on shoes I put up on eBay is probably more effort and expense than most people would do. If they were in really poor condition I wouldn’t have picked them up. Maybe I did not talk about that in this video, but I have talked about how to inspect shoes and what to look for in other videos. I know they are better lotions out there, and since doing this video I have purchased some (Tanners blend from Ashland leather and I purchased some from Saphir too) but I honestly don’t think the difference is that great especially on a pair of shoes I’m getting rid of. I believe 80% of the gain is by actually USING some sort of product, the last 20% of the gain is IMO by using a better product. Let’s be real, we’re not solving any world problems here.
