  • Want a safe and easy way to train a new RC plane pilot? Use a buddy box! That's simply a way to use two transmitters to control one airplane, with one transmitter being in control at a time. The instructor has one transmitter, and the student has the other. Control can be transferred by the instructor to the student at any time, and the instructor can regain control whenever needed. RC Jim shows you how to set this up for Spektrum NX and DX transmitters.

    Excellent tutorial
Spektrum is so much more user friendly then any other radio ie radiomaster frsky ect

Yes, that's true, and apparently you can now upgrade the NX firmware and get a lot more channels. But it is quite amazing what you can do with a Radiomaster.

I set up my buddy box system so the student only has the function of the sticks. That way, there is no need to worry about settings matching, and so forth. Select the mode Pilot-Link-Master on the instructor's radio. I did not see mention of this in the video.
For what it's worth, I set switch A to select student or instructor, and keep Master-Override active. What you say is true about "fumbling" one of the sticks and inadvertently taking control away from the student. I've done this many times, especially with a new student when I keep my thumbs close to the controls all the time. Fortunately, no harm has come of it other than a bit of annoyance.
My preferred trainer is either an AeroScout or an Apprentice, neither of which has retractable gear or flaps. Both are very forgiving. I'm old and slow so I don't buddy box with more complicated planes.

Thanks for the heads up. I don't use the Pilot Link option, but I should have covered it in the video. I'll edit the video with my test results and comments about that at the end.

    Great stuff thanks.
I own an NX6 and have a DX6 for my son and wondering if you can use the SD card to transfer all the aircraft files so the setup is identical?

Given that the aircraft files are on the NX, no that would not work. However, if they were on the DX it would be possible to transfer them to the NX.

Hi, I have a spektrum NX10 and a DX5e. Would the DX5e work for a trainer radio if I use the cable method?

Use the NX10 as the trainer and the DX5e as the student. Then you can use the normal wireless buddy box system. The DX5e only needs to transmit a normal signal. The receiver inside the NX10 will pick up that signal when it is bound to the student radio. Alternately you can use a wire link between the two.
