Transplanting a ThinkPad X230 Tablet screen into an X230.

  • Did you know that ThinkPad Twist S230U and X230 Tablet displays are the same as the IPS display in the X230? Until recently, I didn't know that! In today's video we are going to be using an X230 Tablet that's in miserable condition as an organ donor to fix my X230 that I have made previous videos about. It's a difficult process and I don't necessarily recommend taking this route over just buying the screen by itself, but there are reasons for this method as well, including cheaper prices most of the time, and the fact that you are guaranteed to get a genuine display and not an aftermarket model.
    This video is not meant to be a be-all, end-all guide to taking apart ThinkPad Tablet displays, as every model is going to be different. However, I had read a few posts in the r/thinkpad subreddits and on the ThinkPad forums about using a ThinkPad Twist display in a X230, so I figured why not give it a go with my X230 Tablet? I haven't seen any video documentation of this process, so I figured I would try it out! As for the other X230 Tablet I showed working in the video, it will be featured as part of another video at some point in the foreseeable future.
    As always thanks for watching and I hope you stick around for some more content!

    The timing of your video couldn't be more perfect! I ordered a Twist 2330U IPS display last week and it will arrive soon. It looks like the process is very similar to the X230 Tablet disassembly. I was a little unsure how difficult it might be but it looks pretty straight forward after seeing your video. I will be replacing the TN panel on my X220. Oh, I got a great deal on the Twist 2330U display - only $35 on eBay! :)

    The digitizer only transmits & receives a short-range radio signal to/from the pen, it delivers power to the pen and the pen reacts by delivering a signal back that is detected precisely to determine position, it doesn't deal with touch at all. Touch is done through the front capacitive glass which is an entirely different principle.

    there is a possibility to get an X60 without a stylus (don't know if it is multi-touch) and since i cannot rely only on trackpoint - what is the simplest way to bypass the stylus, could the rubber of a pencil do the job?

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  Před 2 lety +1

      You would basically have to follow a similar process to this except be a LOT more careful. I wasn't so careful because the digitizer was already broken and I didn't need it after extracting the display, but if you want to retain the touch functionality you will have to be REALLY careful. Take a look on eBay or other sites and see if you can get a good deal on a complete assembly before attempting to take apart yours.

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  Před 4 lety

      Very difficult. The process of just getting the display out of the tablet is hard enough, I would not even try to attempt replacing the screen in another tablet. I kind of got lucky with this and found an identical display (actually was an upgrade as it was the multitouch model) on Mercari for $20 so if you can find a replacement tablet display for cheaper, that might be the better option.

    a different question entirely, regarding your x230, i see you have the 2.6GHz i5 model, the i7 is 2.9GHz and is the same number of cores/threads.. just with x16 PCI-E lanes in the i7 instead of just x1 with the i5, im in the market for an x230 or x230t... should i bother with scouring ebay for a good i7 or should i settle for a cheaper i5? in all theoretical comparisons the 2 CPUs are only about 5-11% difference in performance... thing is id like to ensure i can play 1080p encoded media, as i plan to dock the laptop to a 1080p display... :) thanks for reading!

    I would like to warn everybody who'd like to do this "mod" taking X230T IPS display, putting it into classic X230: the glass on top of the IPS screen (with thick black borders which only the Tablet version has) is actually glued to the glass of the IPS LCD. Sebi's panel for some reason did not have any glue (I wonder why), so it is actually not an easy "take prying tool and slowly take it apart", but you'll have to use a heater (if I remember 190°C should be used for heating the glue in order to get it into the liquid state, without damaging the LCD) and then slowly take it apart. For me it is too late, I just broke a perfectly fine IPS screen. :(

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  Před 4 lety +1

      That's very interesting, maybe it's possible that there were different manufacturers of the displays, or Lenovo revised the process at some point. In the X240 for example, I know on some of them the touchpads are screwed in while on other variants they are glued in, or some combination of both. I'm sorry to hear about your display!!!

    With the statement at around "9:30", talking about the blowing out a backlight fuse. With the X230 and similar age laptops, this isn't true. They use LED drivers, which are integrated into the monitor connector. If this were a CCFL backlit laptop, it would have a separate two pin connector to power the backlight.
    It will not harm your laptop to plug in a LED backlit display while it is turned on. I accidentally did this when I was working on my ProBook 6570b, swapping the screen from its stock Samsung LTN156KT02 for a AUO B156RW01-V1. Which the main reason why I swapped the screen is because the original Samsung panel had a HORRIBLE 16 ms response time, the AUO had a 8 ms.

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  Před 4 lety

      I wish that were correct, however these machines still have a backlight fuse to protect the LEDs from getting electricity that they aren't supposed to get. If the fuse blows, the backlight won't work until it's replaced or you jump the connection on the fuse. Trust me, I've learned that the hard way on T430/X230's numerous times. I've also worked on plenty of older ThinkPads so I am very much aware of the difference between CCFL and LED backlights. Blowing the backlight fuse is a well-documented issue in the ThinkPad community due to not disconnecting power before removing the screen.

    • @bill_clinton697
      @bill_clinton697 Před 4 lety

      Oh, I thought you were talking about a CCFL, as they would draw a lot more power and require a fuse. But a fuse on a LED backlight, that's some stupidity. What if the screen cable becomes loose, there goes your fuse.

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  Před 4 lety

      @@bill_clinton697 In some cases it's been fine, like a T440p I had a while back with a frayed cable causing it to flicker. But other times me swapping out displays without disconnecting the AC adapter and/or battery has led to the fuse blowing. Many others have had this happen too, so I feel it's safest to just keep everything disconnected from power before messing with the screen.
