- Smackdown vs. RAW 2009 is infamously known for being the only Smackdown vs. RAW game to not feature legends. While the lack of legends left a glaring hole in the roster, there aren't many superstars who didn't make the game with the emergence of DLC in games, but we are still going to lay a few hypothetical pleas and claim five superstars who SHOULD have been included in the game!

Another big omission is The Godfather, who was supposed to be DLC for this game. His render, model, entrance, call name, commentary, and moveset are all hidden in the game's files.

It did have legends as DLC though: Doink, Earthquake, The Bushwhackers, Masked Kane, Vader, and Tazz was in the base roster. That was about the amount of legends every game had back then.

Man, that Jamie Noble bump scared me for life. I remember that was the first time I saw Sheamus and Noble selled it like he was crying. I was really sad for Noble as a kid.
I swear, SvR 2009 is such a middle of the road game in the series for me, I don't hate it and I don't even think it's the worst of the series, I just think it's just okay at best. With the Legends being scrapped for LoWM (should've been able to port them over into SvR 2009) but also introducing a wanted feature back with Road to WrestleMania, it just exists. Blocking the Legends is really the worst thing about it even if all the current roster at the time was in. Good list of people that could've been in through DLC, my dawg!
Totally agree. While it did some things extremely well, some of the areas where it comes up short are head scratching and make you say "the FUCK?!"

THQ removing GM Mode destroyed this game.
Even the game was outdated in its roster, half the teams that were in it were broken up and released, I love when the games keep released people on the roster but in this game it was so many I just have to point it out
True that. While it wasn’t uncommon to see teams on the game that were either released or broken up by the time the game came out, I’d still take a roster as full as possible!
I can understand why people say this is the worst SVR in the series but I strongly disagree. Its still better than 2008. 2009 imo had some cool new features that were building blocks for future WWE games to innovate.
RTWM was way better than 24/7 season mode. It had highlight reel and Create-A-Finisher. It finally added signature modes so you couldn’t just spam the 5-Knuckle Shuffle. You had to work for it. (Kind of like Super Cena had to after hitting his 2 shoulder blocks and protoplex.) It’s funny how they try to use tag team wrestling as the selling point of the game but at the same time they added some quality of life improvements that made tag matches much more bearable. Finally your partner will knock the non-legal man off the ropes after you hit your finisher like in real life. The new ability system was ok. You couldn’t just beat somebody like Randy Orton with a clothesline because he had Resiliency.
But I get that there wasn’t that much to do after unlocking everything in RTWM unless you wanted to go online and play spammers with 100 overall caws. The career mode was a joke. And of course the game only had like 2 legends.
Phenomenal comment. I think 2009 gets hit because of the lack of legends doesn't sit well with many. GM Mode provided so much replay ability to the other games, which is what saves 2008 for me. The crazy thing is, a "bad" SvR Game still holds up and is overall enjoyable. I think the gameplay improved with each year as well. RTWM gave you tons of hours of immersion, but once you were done, you were done. Thank you for the input man!
I think SVR 08 is overrated but I think the roster puts 08 ahead of 09. I agree RTWM was better than 24/7 season mode. I’m not a GM mode fan but it was a lot of content that was missing in 09. I do think a lot of people forget 09 had create a finisher and 2k has no reason to not have that feature. It’s really close between the two but 08 and 09 are definitely the weakest SVR games.

Bloody fantastic video, lad! Other than the glaring omission of Legends, you elucidated SvR 2009’s more prominently pertinent issues. Whilst I subjectively loved SmackDown vs. RAW 2009 (especially on the Nintendo Wii - that version was ace) in isolation, to objectively deny that the game did not have its share of problems is complete ignorance. The game did, in fact, have bits and bobs removed that hold it back so. SvR ‘07, on the other hand, is my personal favourite WWE game of all-time, by the way.
Overall, I enjoyed the video enormously; it was brilliantly produced, thoughtfully narrated, and your witty subtext meta commentary provided both laughter and communicative instruction. Indeed, the video’s presentation was cracking! This old English-Italian Doctor is most certainly chuffed! In fact, I fancy seeing more interesting deep-dive videos on past WWE games in future. 🙏

I don’t think SVR 09 is bad but definitely the most lackluster in the SVR series. SVR 10 and 11 are significantly better than 09. I would take SVR 09 over the majority of the 2k games to be honest. I would say 6.5/10 is fair for this game.

This game as a kid basically for me was the standard for WWE games in terms of roster as I didn't know what Legends were and was too dumb to remember The Rock was a wrestler as well as not knowing or realizing previous SvR games having Legends

My biggest problem with this (2 really) this is the same year legends of Wrestlemania came out but you couldn’t import that roster into SVR 09..

Back in the days was for me the biggest problem the too small womens roster. All the friends that came too me played over 70% of the time females ... that means just the handfull over and over again.
This game has the e best iteration of Cryme Tyme ever.
I have recently started an Exhibition-Universe Mode in this game!Though,it may not have many features of this tupe,it gives you the chance to be more creative and manage Universe Mode better I think!
Now,about the people who say it is the worst,I don't agree,I think it's mediocre...The problem is after RTWM you have nothing to do,a Create a Story or a GM Mode would have given people a different taste as well as a bigger roster...
I love that! That was always my go to in the games that didn't have a GM Mode! I definitely agree that this game would have been received much more positively had there been some kind of game mode you could keep coming back to.

It's actually impossible to release all the superstar you mentioned, usually the SVR serie includes only superstars that debut before Wrestlemania.

The only thing that really stands out in svr 2009 is how good the titles looked and fit on the wrestlers unlike other games
Even if you add 25% of the legends from legends of WM to SVR09 this would still be the worst SVR game easily. No gm mode, the worst road to wrestlemania, garbage outside the ring camera, and it’s only innovation was tag team wrestling. Absolute trash

Smackdown vs Raw 2009 is definitely the weakest in the series with 2008 as a close second. This game has no legends, removed GM mode, removed season mode, removed match types, and removed create a championship. Theres nothing to do in this game after you beat RTWM, and while that’s fun it’s not enough to keep you coming back. I have fun when I play this game and I wouldn’t say it’s unplayable at all it’s still fun to play but it’s the one I come back to the least.
Also one thing I’ve never understood is why Yukes removed Eddie Guerrero from these games until WWE 12 it’s not like his wife and nephew weren’t still with WWE so it makes no sense why he isn’t in 2009-WWE 12.

Agree Eddie should have been as part as the base roster as legends especially since Ik Eddie was in svr 2008 on the psp version but he should have been in all versions of the game but yeah Eddie should have been in svr 2009-2011 idk why they waited till wwe 12 to add him

Lmao! This game definitely did some good things, but overall it just wasn't the SvR I had grown accustomed to.
Jack Swagger could have been dlc but he was definitely too late for the main game. What we have to remember is the games released for the 2007-2008 in its timeline so anyone after wrestlemania 24 had little chance. Umaga and Khali in 07 is the only exceptions and I guarantee they were very last second.
With dlc coming out for this game I still don't think anyone other than swagger and truth should have been there. Charlie Haas looked so ugly in the dlc

This game needed legends from svr 2006-2008 like I don’t understand why wasn’t Rock,Austin,Bret,Eddie,Mick,Rick,Mr Perfect but yeah the roster in this game should have been the roster in svr 2008 but svr 2009 had a good roster but I felt like if they added R-Truth,Dolph Ziggler,Jack Swagger,Jamie Noble,Gregory Helms,Kenny Dykstra,Charlie Haas and Super Crazy as base game roster

Yes, the in game rosters are primarily made up of guys who are on the roster before WrestleMania of the same calendar year as the game is released.

Some of the people that you list on your video The reason why they didn’t make it SVR 2009 because they arrive in the WWE way too late if they would’ve make their debut like in January to April they would’ve made it but they should’ve put Jamie noble at least and also some other people that was in the wwe roster at that time like Stevie Richards, Nunzio, Paul burchill, Mike Knox, Katie lea burchill, Colin delaney, deuce & domino and cherry, Balls Mahoney, Natalya, Shannon Moore, and the highlanders .
