Those giants are called 'Umibozu.' They are renowned as the most terrifying sea monsters in Japanese folk legends, believed to be the souls of drowned monks or unfortunate individuals who got lost at sea. Over time, fueled with anger, they transform into these bald-headed, big black-eyed sea giants. They emerge on peaceful nights to instill fear by drowning sailors who venture into their territory. I liked your take on how there are three of them and they might represent those emotions that disappear in the music video. They definitely represent those kids' emotions while they are on that stage

is there any theory relating this with how they're underwater? or is it basically the feeling of anxiety represented as a drowned sailor??

@@ayibanna i believe they are under water because they represent those sailors that are sailing at the sea while they are on the stage, performing. They feel scared and anxious on the stage; just like those sailors in the legend but they find a way to make those emotions go away and enjoy the stage instead

They are inside the kids mind. Which is why it's chaotic and random with the scenes. The kids are on stage about to perform and they are nervous and scared etc. So they are in the kids mind trying to defeat the emotions so they can enjoy the performance instead of being scared or anxious etc.

They wrote the song. They know what they want to say. They have discussions with mv production house until they agree on mv’s content and message. Nothing is left to chance or meaningless dribble. This is why Stray Kids is my number one favorite. They run a tight ship and control as much as possible in their music and presentation.

"felix looks like an edgy kpop doctor who" it's moments like these i know i'm in the right place. a PD reaction + review of stray kids is always a treat! the fact that you picked up on the hanja form of 희로애락 (喜怒哀樂) meaning joy, anger, sorrow, happiness = emotions immediately is insane. stray kids actually called out the different emotions in a tiktok, and mentioned in their intro before rock-star's release that they wanted to convey happiness. you really hit the nail on the head and your thought process is so insightful and refreshing. it works on so many levels!
i read that the creature in the background was an umibozu, a sea demon in japanese folklore that appears to sailors on calm waters and suddenly brings tumultuous waves. on surface level it ties in with the pirate theme, but tying it back to what you said about there specifically being 3 creatures and 3 emotions of joy, anger and sorrow makes so much sense! i love combining these different thoughts.
love that you seen them from debut till now and take the time to understand their music and message. as well as share your thoughts on how they've grown, matured and embraced insecurities and anxieties they once sang about to really now be champions and keepers of it. it really makes watching your SKZ reaction + reviews a joy to watch. good luck with the project you're writing, PD!

I think a lot of people under estimate, or do not look beyond the general term "Kpop" when it comes to Stray Kids. On the one hand, because their sounds is not typical Kpop, getting call "noise music". On the other hand, not giving a fair go because it's "Kpop". It has been a journey for them. I think at Five Star comeback they decided, stuff it, what we have is great, so let's fully embrace it and embrace who we are as artists. Kudos to them for sticking to their vision. All the very best to them.

Stray Kids is a wall when it comes to music video and hype music. They set the bar higher and higher each comeback. Some people think that being self produced is overrated but you can clearly see why it is so important when you pay attention to what they want to say in their music. I think 3racha's music production is still underrated, I'm so amazed while listening the instrumentals and checking their lyrics game. They're so clever with presenting their ideas.

I would say with S-Class and the 5 Star album Stray Kids entered their new phase.
With God’s Menu and the first full length album, they somehow “redebuted/restarted” their career in the term of it felt like their new start with the 8 members line up and at the same time they gained the recognition of Korean public as well.
I mean, they come from the Big 3, JYP, so obviously Korea was aware of them, but they were a good example of a 4th generation group, which has more popularity among global fans more than in Korea.
Obviously with God’s Menu and on they started to grow both in Korea and the world at the same time and they were just getting bigger and bigger every comeback.
But with S-Class and them performing at the VMAs, it somehow feels like they didn’t just grow more again.
It is more like they reached the status of the global star and now they are growing in completely new realm.
Basically a similar case to BLACKPINK and their The Album + their first Coachella, where it happened to be their “global stage debut” and the “global debut album”.
What I am saying is that Stray Kids are in the global stars realm as BTS and BLACKPINK.

They have so much talent and drive. Songs are catchy and melodic. Lyrics have meaning and message. They are good looking guys who can rap, sing, dance, act, and are not afraid to be real. It isn’t easy to break out of 4th gen groups because many are also excellent.

Stray kids They are definitely dominant k-pop. they are making history in billboard, sales,in award ( asia,,US,) first group in performance in many events and shows. Why they are so successful, popular and legends of k-pop.why people like them and Difference between Stray kid's and other boy groups and girls groups ( like BTS,exo, black pink, bigbang, svtn and other k-pop groups).
Stray kids have all quality which differ them from other groups
    • Self made - They are First fully self made group in k-pop. chan pick all group members, they made name, concept, and logo.
other hand other groups made by company .
    • Self produce - other group they become successfull thanks to other producer, composer, lyricist. Stray kids is self produced group from the start their discography made by themselves. They are the one make beat, melody, write lyrics, compose song, record the song, and edit.
    • Innovation - They are step out from stereotypes music and made new creative, innovative and organic music that is lacking in other groups, other groups just repetitive and play safe to please the people.
    • Artistic value -stray kid's half of group is doing dance , producing, making songs before they debut ( 3racha and Lee know backup dancer) and with skz player and skz record because they love what they do. In other hand Many other idol is coming to industry for stardom, frame and money they didn't care about music forgetting about their main job singing and doing other things like modeling, acting, advertising etc
    • Music - stray kids give depth and meaning to music, other want popularity from music.
    • All producer's - 3racha is regular member of KOMCA ,Bangchan have most song credits -181,
changbin -152, Han-148 and all other members have above 15 songs credits.
    • Song - they make song about many different topics like from hallevator to rock stray, astronaut, circus, school life, question, mirror, insomnia, side effects, voice they have large spectrum of songs.
    • Gener - rock , EDM, soft, Hip hop, ballad , electro, R and B they have huge discography. we see less gener in other groups.
    • Creator - stray kids is creator and presenter of song and not just presenter like other.
Lyrics - they are very creative and unique, and meaningful many Wordplay, many languages involved, 3-4 different meanings in lyrics. That's is very rare in other groups, less creative.
•Social awareness - stray kids have courage to brought up topic that is taboo to talk like dipression, loneliness, insomnia, phobia, social pressure etc that topic come from from them.
•Give sociaty- from donation to work in EDM project or a social work,or with meaningful lyrics or to communicate with people to give advice to never give up, how deal with depression or they say they are always here to listen.
    • Realistic - they made realistic song in other hand other group promote fantacy and imaginary concept far from reality.
    • Talent - they are very talented rapper, dancer, singing.they all do both singing and rapping, their rapping is best in k-pop, unique voice strength.
    • Concept - other groups promote perfect and idol image like god.stray kid's image is like normal human being that's why people feel more related to them.
    • connection- Stray kid's is one of the group that has deep connection with people to the point, like they are telling our story. Their music is like EXPRESSION OF LIFE and expression of emotions".
with other groups you listen to them but don't feel connection with them.
Stray kids came from zero to top by themselves. They are work hard and achieving the success they deserve. What people love about stray kids music that not only you listen k-pop sound in their music but also they give something new, fresh and experimental, innovative to the song and to the music industry. They didn't limit themselves and explore new side of music. They are most impactful group in k-pop music industry.stray kid's music will be dominating in the music industry for many years and decades. More you listen to their music, the more you admire and respect them. They are huge in music industry.❤❤

Stray kids is very talented group. What people love and respect about skz is that from the start they are very true to their artistic self. Not only you listen k-pop sound in their music but also they give something new , fresh and experimental to the song and to the music industry.
Each group have their own identity. stray kids are their own kind ,they are oddinary.3racha are youngest producer that have top most copyrights in KOMCA, chan is in top 3 and changbin and han is in top 10 in very short time period.
stray kids songs are very original, realistic and connected with you and life related about pressure, happiness, joy, sadness, love etc . there song is connected with you like they are telling your journey/your emotions or how you see or feel in that situation. They have "MALABAR GENER" Their music /sound are very creative , unique and innovation and That type of music no where to found and they prove many time (from hellevetor to lalalala and from servival show to Kingdom)They are very experimental this is very new to me because other groups Play safe even with or without self produced groups. With music they always offer something new , innovative and uniqueness to music Industry and the lyrics creativity is mind blowing, Wordplay and many depicted meaning in one line/word is very new in k-pop industry.
In Music they have diversity (in gener, in subject) unique, experimental sound and new, fresh, orignal songs lyrics, minar details, rapping style , emotions of songs are mind blowing .
They work hard to get where they are. They sacrifice their sleep, physical -mental pain (chan have neck injury , Felix back pain,Hans anxiety problem and many more but they never stop working.
There are not many groups that have this many talents like they have . Before their debut they prove themselves what they are capable of , They do everything themselves They produce songs and choose which is suitable for the album.
Producing/ composing is not easy it's have long process they work hard to make good music, making beats, composing, writing lyrics, producing, recoding, editing , mixing, arranging and many more plus they have to prepare for dancing and singing, performing, and other Verity of show they overworked themselves. They work 20-25x time more then any other groups.2-3album in year for self producing group It's self tell work and burden they go through. They overworked and they deserve to get payed .They are getting respect and recognition what they deserve but they need more recognition according to their skills , talents and work.
they started from zero and now they are top .they are not blow up in one night they work their ass off to reach where they are now they continuously working without worrying about anything. we are happy that growing and increasing day by day , they are on top but this is just beginning just wait and watch.
Everyone who is listen stray kids They respect stray kids as artist/ musician. Their success is when people recognised their indentity, respect their hardwork, and value their music.
In upcoming years stray kids are most recognised and respected and popular group in music industry. Not this year but this decade's k-pop music is define and shaped by stray kids music. Their impact is huge ❤️❤️❤️

    @11:46 on your video......
The bus, with DISTRICT 325 printed on the side, is a Dark Night reference, but it is ALSO a reference to District 9 (their debut song) and their debut date (3/25/2018).
Stray Kids love to hide little Easter eggs in some of their videos, and the fans like to look for them.
The M/V for S-Class had some, their Japanese M/V for Super Bowl had some, any time there's a clock in one of their M/Vs it's set to 3.25 (again, referencing their debut date), any time in one of their M/Vs that you see one of the members talking into a shoe it's a reference to an episode of Chan's Room where Han talked into a shoe.....etc.
Also.....the 8 young boys in their band uniforms who are squeezing their eyes shut in fear at the beginning, and gradually start opening their eyes.....and also appear at the very end in front of a cheering audience........they represent the 8 members of Stray Kids who started their journey as trainees and then idols, and all of the fears and anxieties they faced as they progressed. At the end, they have successfully conquered their fears.
Lastly......Stray Kids have a long-standing habit of referencing movie characters, anime characters, video games, etc in a number of their songs. They love all of that, and they know many of their fans do, too.

20:38 as for the emotions represented, in the map you see earlier, they point out which emotion is which set! the bank is joy (the absolute chaotic energy and the smiling clown masks, but also the timer running out and the emotion disappearing), the white is sorrow (the snow, the melancholy, and even the monster attempting to stomp them), the pirates are anger (funnily enough everyone looks so pissed and angry in that set lol but in the last scenes of that set their pirate flags turn into white flags as a truce!) and lastly happiness is the music set, which connects perfectly with the meanings of the hanja, and the big conclusion of the mv is in that set only!!
also, the hanjas are present in each set. in the white set it's obviously on the wall, in the bank set it's in the green tapestry banners(? idk how to call those) on the walls, in the pirate and music sets the hanjas are in the flags

I've probably said it before, but I'll say it again. I love watching "reaction videos" and yours are among my favorites to watch because of the "culture study" aspect. I find it super interesting to learn these little bits and how they tie in to their music. They are so talented and often take symbolism and philosophy to the next level in their lyrics, etc. Just another reason to love and appreciate Stray Kids.
I know the Stray Kids are fans of Marvel & DC, but I found it to be "too much" here and though it had it's own story, I didn't feel like it belonged. (Now pirates I was fine with because they're just cool, hahha) I ever considered either to be an element of the children's imaginations, heroes to bolster against their fear (etc) as they take an intimidating stage. By that reasoning (whether it is accurate or not, lol), I can appreciated it now whereas before it was unnecessary "extra."

Man, Stray Kids' mind is so impressive.

I absolutely loved your analysis here, spot on! Personally I resonate with this song's message so much, and I love that Stray Kids continues to discuss deeply emotional topics with their music. It's one of the things that sets them apart in my opinion.

the stuff you've pointed out in terms of the use of the hanja in the context of the mv is largely why this is my favorite skz concept (even if LALALALA isn't my favorite title track, nor is it even my favorite track in the album). it's been really hard to explain to my more western-minded peers why i think it's such a successful and fitting concept for the group, but i think your explanations here sum it up so much better than whatever i've tried to say! i've heard arguments that if skz needed to go out of their way to explain things then it wasn't a successful concept, but that line of thinking assumes that no one else around them cottoned on to these things prior to their explanation. seeing someone like you catch on w/o hearing skz explain it first is comforting as a result. thank you for the insight as always!

Stray Kids' songs and MVs always have a lot of nuances and meaning and story that's well told and that's why I love them. And the best of all they create all of those themselves. All self-produced.

Going off what I’ve seen in the comments. They are in the kids’ minds, so there’s an additional movie reference to Inside Out. And, after the explanation about the emotions, it becomes even more clear. The movie references and chaotically jumping from scene to scene is probably representing how kids think like that. They draw their energy and inspiration from different media they’ve seen already. My appreciation for this song and MV have grown just from PD’s input and the comments section. Thanks!!

OMG! I'm so glad you mentioned the school bus because I've been trying to figure out why it seemed so familiar. They could be referencing both. I know now for a fact that they are specifically referencing to their debut because they debuted on March 25 in which the bus reads the number 325. Thank you for mentioning it, because my brain literally just snapped on that part right away the moment you mentioned it! xD Don't blame me guys, it's been a while since their debut and I've been with them since before debut so it's definitely been quite a trip since then. xD

What if the kids are supposed to represent them as how they feel when they're on stage. Like as if they know they are great at what they do but the moment they have to perform they get so anxious and nervous that they feel the fear making them into a smaller version of themselves? Like a moment when they're saying, " this is how we feel when we have to perform in huge stadiums, we feel like small ants, small humans performing on the stage" and then you see those small kids performing to these huge events happening all around them and basically in the end they're just trying to get by with feeling the happiness and they're trying to feel the support of everything and everyone. It's just a theory I thought about, let me know what you guys think.
