I wonder what that little "drama" was with the Guardsman marching off the parade with an Officer and set to stand next to the Police van, a little chat between an RSM and the officer who then returns to the Guardsman for another little chat and the Guardsman marches back into his division. Now I wonder what that was all about?

This is a rehearsal for the ceremony of "Trooping the Colour", otherwise known as the King's Birthday Parade, in which the regimental Colour (flag) of one of the five Guards regiments is "trooped", i.e. displayed to all the troops,.in the presence of the King. There will be two more full dress rehearsals on 1st and 8th of June, and the actual ceremony with the King taking the salute will be on 15th June. There is a long Wikipedia article describing the history and development of the ceremony, which dates from the days when it was essential for soldiers to be able to recognise their own regiment's Colour as a rallying point in the heat of battle.

      [part 2/2]
If you want to see why beards and guardsmen go well together, take a good long look at those British Foot Guards and line infantry troopers from the Crimean War. Granted, the style of their uniforms at the time lend themselves to it ('it', being, also having beards) However, another factor is how the modern British Guards don't wear backpacks and all the other equipment the guards _used_ to parade with, until the middle of the 20th century. In my opinion, they just look a lot more 'balanced' with more bags and equipment on (it might be awkward for some movements and it might be unpopular with the guardsmen, so who knows) But combined with their Lee-Enfield rifles, long weapons compared to the bullpups they carry now, they looked _very smart_ with their beards and moustaches.
It's just a matter of selecting the right combinations of equipment, accoutrements and what I believe, should be ceremonial weapons. For instance, in the USA, there are units which practice with wooden rifles (e.g. the US Marines) and rifle drill, doing fancy twirling motions and demonstrations with their old looking, classic aesthetic, wooden rifles. And that makes sense. The modern British guardsmen look slightly to be missing something. In my view, it's the following:
1 - Enough white leather webbing; they, to my eyes, just look a bit too reliant on the tunic whereas it shouldn't just be a white belt to offset the tunic.
2 - Lee-Enfield rifles for parade (I believe these would be a much better sight on parade than the bullpups), they just are a lot nicer to look at and much taller, cutting a striking outline with the sword bayonets attached as well: NOTE: the old Lee-Enfield Mark I-III star, would be as tall or slightly taller than the average guardsman or infantry trooper carrying it in WWI, when the bayonet was affixed; putting into perspective, what it was they were dealing with, firing a rifle basically as big as them by height, in trench warfare conditions)
I would acknowledge that, of course, there are no longer a standard collection of Lee-Enfields at parade standard all looking necessarily identical, though so many Lee-Enfields were made, and used for so long (tens of millions of units) that there are still a lot knocking around today globally. It wouldn't be that difficult to get a batch remade, by the Royal Armouries, either; with the the white leather shoulder strap underslung between rings either, making the rifle look even more beautiful on parade) I'm sure the Royal Armouries will have plenty of old originals in storage. They are just so, so much better looking.
And by the same logic of the guards using uniforms for ceremonial purposes, why can't they have ceremonial rifles? Just because Lee-Enfields will probably never see combat again (at least in the hands of the British Army) it doesn't mean they can't still be used for ceremonial purposes. Yet again, some know-it-all Penfold character a long time ago in some high place of authority, probably just fobbed off the Lee-Enfield, in favour of using newer rifles, for the sake of 'modernity', but then forgot that the Lee-Enfield was just the best aesthetic option they ever came up with.
Varnished, polished, wooden dominated rifles always look better on parade. Always. It's not even close. The bullpups they carry now look uncomfortably and awkwardly stunted and small for parade duties (as if they are putting a lot of effort into not dropping them in hand, because they are just slightly awkward) The long rifles would be no problem in that regard. Beautiful in the hand. Personal in feeling and classic in their aesthetic.
3 - Backpacks/haversacks with their belt and webbing. British guardsmen in British Pathe film reels clearly continued to wear their backpacks and side bags for a long time. In my opinion, these just look much smarter. There is something oddly empty looking about the guardsman now, looking like they are too 'top heavy' with their bearskins and having something missing in between their waist and shoulders/up to their necks.
It honestly seems to be the fact they aren't wearing enough webbing or backpacks any more. Apologies if not all of my accoutrement related wording isn't the absolutely correct terminology. There'll be a specific name for the models of these patterns of webbing and bags they were wearing proudly in the 19th and 20th centuries. To my eyes, it balances out their uniforms. Again, take a good long look at the Crimean War veteran photos. They were tough as nails but still looked very smart, even with long beards and dirtied uniforms.
4 - Beards. Smartly maintained and trimmed if necessary. If everyone of them wore beards, it'd be even less of an issue for those that don't like them, because at least then, they'd be literally, 'uniform' in all sporting mid-length to long beards. The ones today growing beards out, look more conspicuous precisely _because_ most of the other guardsmen just don't. In my view, they should all be encouraged to grow beards. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it and it is masculine.
There'd have to be policies against scruffy beards or goatees etc (only being allowed to have full beards kept in check) Part of that 'keeping in check' is why they haven't done this, because it's a pain to keep on top of, but they could easily figure it out and look smart with relatively little effort. They would certainly spend much longer on polishing their boots to perfection than they ever could on their theoretical beards, so yeah. Why not? Again, if they ticked these 4 boxes I've outlined, then they'd look great again.
P.S. - Don't get me wrong, they _still_ look mighty sharp and smart looking even now, but in my opinion, their forebears in an elder era just look much smarter still, with their Lee-Enfields, backpacks, webbing and other accessories/accoutrements. And beards can work with that all combined together. It's just that, they look so bereft of their other uniform items currently. The tunics and belts aren't enough on their own, to offset the large bearskins. Just my two pence (and I make it go far! lol)
