      Hello Robert! Hope you guys are keeping well! It’s been a productive first quarter of this year for Reloved… the graph on my accounts package dashboard shows that the green is bigger than the red for this period - which I’m assured is good news :D I’ll be doing this until I physically can’t, I think as I don’t have any pension to look forward to. So chances are that that my very last video might feature me keeling over… :D

      The one and only time I visited Cannes (1981?) aged 18 with 3 schoolboy pals looking for sizzling sand, sea and sexy ladies we piled off the train into a cold drizzle. I think it was later April, early May… we stood around the sea front in our kagools, freezing and dreaming of getting back in the warm train…

    Have you ever tried brown washi rice paper masking tape? Nichiban makes some really good rolls of it.

    • @SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
      @SamDeeksRelovedGuitars Před 2 měsíci +1

      No.... but checking it out it's SO expensive by comparison. The problem is that I don't think the Nichiban tape will even prevent USA or MIM poly from falling off. The problem is something in their finishing process, whether a fault in the finish adhesion properties or contamination on the wood and metal surfaces. Comparatively it just never happens to regular, boring old Far East mass produced guitars regardless of price point.
      The only other way to try to avoid this problem is to polish each fret individually but there's no way I'd be able to go through 4 grades of paper and 9 grades of micro mesh on each single fret with a fret-protector strip. Maybe that's what the future will have to be though on USA Fenders - re-crown then 2 grades of fret rubber for each fret... But there's no way that would adequately remove 300 grit crowning file marks adequately.

      @@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars thank you for the insight. I use the rubber fret erasers here and there. The trouble is it takes forever to get the scratches out as you mentioned, and the other thing is... since it takes so long, the repeated friction tends to heat up the fret quite a bit unless frequent breaks are taken. I often wonder if it's softening the factory glue beneath the frets but I haven't had a lifting issue thus far.

    Hope you don't mind a bit of criticism but I'm surprised that you don't use masking or painters tape to protect the finish especially when pulling and resting the attached strings to the side of the fretboard.
    I still think you're a top bloke and love the videos and commentary 🙂

    • @SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
      @SamDeeksRelovedGuitars Před 3 měsíci +1

      I don’t mind criticism. The answer is ‘I’m careful’ I suppose, and I’ve yet to see any damage from doing it. But sometimes I do put some tape either side and I think it’s when my experience says ‘this is brittle finish and may chip’. There are a few decisions like that which will always bring criticism: for example which is more risky or destructive, to tap and drift a nut out or to cut it out? This guitar was right in the edge of me reaching for the Dremel cutting disk because, at a certain point of stuck-ness or glued-in-ness, tapping is MORE likely to damage the slot or the wood behind it than cutting it with the screaming Dremel wheel of death. But the point is I’ll get criticism either way ie “you hit that nut too hard, look you broke it.. think what that’s doing to the neck..” vs. “You didn’t have to destroy the nut by cutting it in half!! You should have just tapped it out sideways…” :)
      In the court of public opinion you really can’t ‘win’ :)
      But one thing is for sure, I appreciate your opinion and respectfully-phrased criticism!

      @@georgeoh-well8116 Bizarrely, I COULD charge extra for light relic'ing since it's oddly popular! The 'up-side' of showing unedited stuff is that people trust me to a) do what they asked me to do and b) to go to the end of the earth to put right any mistakes I make. We all know that we ALL make mistakes so it's always been my view that 'owning' them is a better strategy. Doesn't appeal to everyone but it's an effective part of my 'qualification' strategy i.e. ensuring that the people who come to me to work on their guitars are 100% the kind of customers I want. Unless you've run a business (and I'm not saying you haven't) you (we/I) have no idea how valuable that is. In marketing terms, the 'sale' has already been made before they even open up their email client to write to you. It's a 'luxury' position that many businesses never reach - mainly because they don't know it's possible.

      @georgeoh-well8116 This is my guitar. I’m not in the market for any relicking. You only need to watch a couple of Sam’s videos to appreciate the care with which he undertakes his work; this was one of the reasons that I sent my guitar to him, and others will follow. That care evident, along with knowledge and skill, I trust him to not to do my guitar harm. Sure, accidents happen, but had anything untoward happened to my instrument, I’ve no doubt Sam would put it right.
