- Episode One of Tour Obscure visits one of the most unusual churches in the entire UK! The Crooked Spire in Chesterfield.
The spire has become the default mascot of the Derbyshire town, lending it’s name to the local football team and many local businesses. The spire is not the only interesting thing about this place though. Join us inside the church to find out about a very special stained glass window, a 1,000 year old font and a mysterious whale bone that ended up in the church nearly 200 years ago and is still there to this day!

When the lead was added to the spire, the weight of it twisted the beams within the spire which in turn, caused it to twist under the sheer weight.
Not what I heard! I was told the Spire was curious to see what was happening when a virgin got married in the church so it bent over to have a look at her, when a virgin next gets married there the spire will straighten up because it's seen one before. At least thats what i was told.
@@philipdove6987 Ive got a Derbyshire Legends & Ghost Stories book and it says in there that local legend hundreds of years ago was the spire was twisted because the devil was flying to London and perched on the spire and when he took off again it bent it haha

Chesterfield printed page font nigh on exclusively swamps the two tourist snaps & one postcard that's

I got to the end of the particular search scroll dealing with the font.

Thanks for this interesting video, just went past on way back from a football match, an incredible site I love churches and cathedrals, so I intend to go back and look around it. The 890 A.D. font is a real gem.

The Spire just sits on the tower. There are no physical connectors or pins. At least one of the beams has a crack in it wide enough that an adult can put there whole hand in up to the wrist. The crane used to lift construction materials up the tower was left in situ rather than dismantled and removed. it was removed in the 20th century and was in 2012 on show in the Chesterfield museum. It was powered by men walking round on the inside of a huge wheel rather like the wheels found in a hamster cage. reputedly it is the oldest surviving crane in the world.

All that nonsense about how the spire got twisted!!🙄 80 years ago when I was about 8/9, my Aunty Alice told me what REALLY HAPPENED. After all those years among mines and railways and smoke, it had all become very dusty and dirty. She was given the job of cleaning the inside of the spire. Not an easy option as she was a large lady but always ready to face a challenge, so, up she went with her trusty dustpan and brush. All went well until she reached for an escaping spider 🕸️🕷️😮👀😰 That was when the whole thing twisted as she clung to the ladder amid all the creaking, noise and swaying, spider forgotten. Once it settled she was down that ladder and out of the now empty church to join the people staring up at the now twisted spire.
Aunty Alice and her sister, my Mum, roared with laughter as my 8 year old self stood staring up at the still twisted Chesterfield spire, full of pride and admiration for my indefatigable Aunt.
