  • Here's a kick microphone shootout between a 1950's AKG D12, early 1980's AKG D12E, mid 1980's Beyerdynamic M380, and a modern Electro Voice RE20. These microphones are classics on kick drum and a staple in many recording studios around the world. The prices of many of these microphones have been skyrocketing lately, so I wanted to make a comparison video to help you decide which is best for you. All of these microphones have been fully serviced and are perfect examples. My hope is that this video will not only help decide which you like best, but become a reference for when buying these classic microphones in the future.

The M380 sounds like it's clipping at first but then when you move it away from the hole it sounds great. I love the lower, darker, more rounded sound of the M380 over the other mics that have an aggressive upper mid range punch going on.

It's a fig-8 mic, he's getting a lot of proximity effect using it that close.

I liked the D12 the best, very slightly, but all sound really good. All personal taste on this. Great video!

Great shootout video, all three have a great mid range, I really like that m380. its hard to tell without a beat how they would translate to a mix.

In the 1980's I used the M380 on a 24" Ludwig kick drum and with 1800 watts driving two JBL 15" scoops per side, the low end would walk drinks off the table in the night clubs. In one town the Police were called as people in the area complained only our band made the houses vibrate. I guess that michrophone did push air at 20hz as advertised. I am about to ressurect the old girl again in a duo act to add presence to the mix with a Gretsch 18" Catalina kick, but with much lower wattage and way less volume.

The RE20 is great on kick in, D12 on kick out. I can leave the Beyer.

that M380TG sounds VERY different than the non-TG M380s I've got. Less punch,, and the fact that it was blowing up in front of the hole is weird.

380 or RE-20 (tbh my "go to" kick mic for about 10 years) for me. I've never liked the frequency response of the AKG kick mics, imo they need a supplemental "high end" mic to not get totally lost in a mix. I do see their place if you're going for a "retro" Ringo Starr kinda thing but for anything kinda "modern/modern rock" 'n' heavier you're gonna wind up inducing a ton of phase distortion trying to EQ that thing to punch through.

All sound good. I’d be curious to hear the same match up on a bass cabinet and a lower tuned unmuted bass drum.

    D12E for the win!

M380 inside, between the batter and resonance heads is much different sounding. This is how Albini uses it. I have a diy version made from a vintage DT 600ohm element.

The trick is to shove the m380 inside the kick. It sounds bad just at the hole where you put it. Since its a figure of 8 patterned dynamic, you shove it way in there close to the beater for the click and the other side of the mic picks up the front head resonance as well. The result is a very punchy, full, and fat sound that is unlike anything else I've heard on a kick. Takes eq very, very well. Hard mic to find too!

Steve is such a punk god... the m380 sounds exactly like black flag about to demolish the audience to shreds with Scream
