    I love Glass Mask. Was surprised to learn from a Vietnamese co-worker that the series is popular in Vietnam. I can't bring myself to watch the other adaption beyond the 1980s tv series because the melodrama and music is part of what makes it an amazing package.

    The 1984 series Glass no Kamen was purchased by Telecino/Gestevision (Spain) from its italian counterpart so the version purchased to be broadcasted would be the italian master. Due to a strike of dubbing actors in the 90s in Spain, the show was sent to Etcétera Group in Venezuela for its dubbing (Latin American Spanish & Spain Spanish dubs are too different regarding accent & vocabulary but understandable between each other). Strangely, the series was never broadcasted in Spain but in Venezuela! Actually this italian version based-dub is lost, there's no recordings on the internet.

I would have to find the 80s series now and watch to compare the differences. I do love the 2005 version and it was a revelation to see how Maya is so consumed by acting that it takes over her, making her acting so scary good. And the voice actor for Masami just made him so hot. I hope the manga artist finish this story.

    i'm sooo happy i've found this video! i've tried watching the 2005 version after finishing the original run of the series (which is the one i watched as a kid too, btw) and it just doesn't have the same appeal to me... surely, the modernized animation must be attractive to many anime-watchers, but it doesn't do the trick for me.
    imho, the fact that it's set in the 80s adds a crucial element to the story that the directors of the newer run couldn't wrap their heads around -- imagine if a movie like "Fame" had been set in the 2010s... it would've been a completely different story or it would've ended up feeling anachronistic.
    also- they kind of ruined Ayumi's design? she is *supposed* to look like an aristocratic kid born from royalty, what with her blonde hair and fancy princely get-ups. she isn't realistic, of course, but that wasn't the point in the first place.
    last thing: the opening. i mean, the two ops for the 2005 version are cute, very shoujo-like and thus fitting in a way, but are they nearly as epic as the original op? sorry but no. the sounds and vibes are perfect for an anime centered around the showbiz -- plus it looks directed like a sequence from "Flashdance"!
    sorry for the rant!! nothing against the newer run or those who enjoy it, i just feel very strongly about this anime and wanted to share.
    loved your video a lot, the editing was phenomenal and matched the anime well!
    thanks for your hard work~

      The character designer of 2005 version is the one who did 1999 (OVA) version, in which Ayumi's hair were curly like in the manga. I think they had to find an easier way for the animators to draw, especially with a large number of episodes (51 episodes).

  • @eadghe
    @eadghe Před 3 lety +8

    I just wanna say that I finished watching 2005 and I really enjoyed it. But when I tried 1984 afterwards, I stopped after the first episode. Everything is so rushed, that important moments are not there. Suddenly this and that just happens because. Weirdest thing, Maya is what Chigusa was looking for, just because she jumped into the water to grab a ticket. 2005 at least showed Maya acting in the park, which gave Chigusa the impression that Maya is the one, although that was weird as well. The rest of 2005 feels pretty smooth though, but the end is a tad open, so there could have been some room for some more episodes. That being said, 51 episodes sure offer enough room for explanations than just 23 episodes. But 1984 really looks like half measurements to me, so why even trying? The music is catchy though.

    Totally loved the video and I'm glad that there is someone in anitube who covers underrepresented 70s shoujo.
    Though what does hamper my enjoyment of this video a bit is the sound. Its hard to understand what you are saying sometimes and thats not because of your accent but mainly because you seem to mix the music too loudly and the production (or the mic) for the voice track isn't optimal. I'm sure it's a bit easier to understand for native english speakers who have a better ear for the language than I do, but I'm sure that there is room to improve here. Again, I wanna emphasize that I don't have a problem with your accent, in fact I low key love it because I love and study language.

    Ahh this was a great recap, I have yet to see the 84 version, it's on my list next. But I will always have a bias towards Ayumi's 2005 voice. Yeah it's not as ojousama as the OVA or 80's version but it's kinda refreshing to see a less pretentious version of her. But I will say all Ayumi's iterations are great and I'll love each one of them. Oops, this was an Ayumi comment. Maya being the perfect bean she is (minus her love interests)

  • @EricMontreal22
    @EricMontreal22 Před 3 lety +1

    Another great video! I used to dismiss the 1984 series as "B-grade Dezaki" in that, compared to Dezaki's animes of classic shoujo (2nd half of Rose of Versailles, Oniisama E and his various Aim for the Ace which Glass Mask may most resemble), it feels clumsy and uninspired. Whereas even the 1974 Ace has wonderful art, stylized backgrounds, strong character designs, interesting angles and direction techniques, a lot of Glass Mask in comparison feels routine--the early episodes have boring backgrounds, for example, and only some stylized sequences. Even though its director, Gisaburō Sugii, has done a lot of great work in his own right. So I used to always just wish Dezaki had done it. (All of these works also, aside from--perhaps--Rose of Versailles, have antagonists with huge flowing blonde hair and Western style dresses...)
    However, I recently bought the DVDs and rewatched it all, and realized it has a lot of its own charms. Also, the art itself gets a *lot* more interesting around the midway point. Dezaki is at the top of anime directors, of course, but Sugii still does a lot more interesting work here than most mid 80s tv anime, and I was surprised how addictive I found the rewatch.
    I haven't seen all of the 2000s remake (I'd like to watch the second half especially to see where the story goes), but from what I have seen, I think you're completely right. Losing the over the top/stylized quality to try to make everything more realistic also loses a lot of the appeal (and makes moments like her jumping in the lake seem all the more weird). Also, at first glance the art looks more complex and superior, but I actually think visually it's far less interesting (and it's not as well directed). Also, Ayumi isn't a blonde? And REI DOESN'T HAVE GREEN HAIR?? WTF?!?
    I need to rewatch the 3 1990s OVAs, but I seem to recall them being a happy middle ground between the two

    You did not give the full picture thou: Harada called Maya "Stage Storm". Harada actually mentioned that to point out that being stage storm was her strength, but simultaneously, also her weakness at the time, which Maya later recognized after playing Elizabeth (a doll). This seemingly oxymoronic weakness of Maya was emphasized when she played Catharine. The stage was called a failure by one of the experts (despite the commercial success), because Maya's young Catherine was not harmonious and emphasized many gaps and contradiction it had with the adult Catharine, hence the stage was said to be 'torn in two'. This 'torn in two' was actually a further tribute to Harada's stage-storm remark where "Maya will cause rift (or indeed, vandalize) in every stages that she attends to" "

    As for shoujo manga that ran longer than Glass Mask, there are comedy works like the crazy Patalliro, also from Hana to Yume which has ran since 1078 and is on 101 volumes.
    Drama wise, starting in the same year as Mask, 1976, in Princess and still running is the wonderful fantasy Crest of the Royal Family, Ōke no Monshō by Chieko Hosokawa. Still running, it has 66 volumes. Not nearly as famous though there is a live musical and an OVA it’s still the fourth best selling shoujo manga ever (Mask is second)
