It’s NOT Playable - How The LEGO Ideas Grand Piano Actually Works

  • The new LEGO Ideas set Grand Piano (21323) is here! Only one problem... it's not playable, and the official marketing has been misleading people. In my first video, which hopefully at least one person will see, I dive into the mechanics of how it works, and go over what it can and can't do. Does the app gimmick take away from the overall value of the set as a whole?
    == Update! ==
    One user was able to make the piano playable by mixing it with two Nintendo Switch Joycons! Check out the demo video here:

    Corrections:
    The more I look at the images, the more I think the IR sensor may be blocked by default, and triggering keys actually un-obscures. But the function is still the same, whether I got the states wrong.
    What would a CZcams video be without mistakes? 😉

    To be honest, if I wanted a toy piano that is actually playable and self-plays the *right* keys I could buy the SEGA mini grand piano for about the same price. The appeal with LEGO is that you can build it yourself, so it depends on what people are really after - are you interested in the mechanics or do you want the music? I guess there's no perfect world. :)
    Great video debut by the way!!

    I definitely wish they'd sold this without the powered up functions. I feel like an 18+ set doesn't need all of these gimmicks in order to sell. I want to get this for a fun building experience and display piece. I also know from the Creator Wind Turbine that Lego motors are way too whiny to want to have running while trying to listen to music from a phone speaker.

    Really glad I found this video. I was thinking of asking for it for Christmas (I completed a ton of architecture kits very quickly so I wanted some challenge) but the other video I watched advertised it as being able to play music and working just like a real grand piano. Obviously, I figured it wasn't that good, but I thought it would at least play the music. You just saved my grandparents from spending 350 bucks, so thanks. Great editing, by the way.

  • @nicholaswheeler3985
    @nicholaswheeler3985 Před 4 lety +5

    For the price of it, I never believed this would actually play sound like a real piano. It’s just not possible to code 25 individual notes from one sensor in this way. You’d need 25 of them - one for each note mechanism. Same for the playback - 25 actuators to move each mechanism independently. Whoever thought they’d get 25 sensors and 25 actuators plus all the bricks to build the mechanism and case for the money they’re asking...?
    The Bluetooth connection to add interactive sound is a fun afterthought, and it helps bring the piano to life in some way, however, I wouldn’t imagine it appealing to many over 18 year olds, so this is where I find the target age audience confusing for this set. I agree they could have easily made the power function an added option for the younger ones.
    I think it’s a great set, and I will get it - just because aesthetically and technically its looks fantastic! But I do agree with the thoughts in this video - the marketing will be misleading for some. It’s promised functionally has been rather over egged!

    • @tedioustotoro4885

      @nicholaswheeler3985 Před 4 lety

      Droo Stanlee How?
      How would it determine which note you were pressing? How do you make each key unique using one sensor so you can play a scale of notes?
      It would only play one note, which is effectively what it’s doing now - accept, the software connected via the Bluetooth just sounds the next note in the tune you’ve chosen each time it detects a pulse from the sensor, which is triggered by you pressing any one of the 25 keys.

    18+ doesn't in any way mean "it's not for kids", it simple means "we know you are an adult so prepare to spend some extra adult money for the same plastic".
    Not all adult sets are overpriced, granted, particularly this one . But the 18+ is a pure marketing technique and not a true age restriction or even suggestion.
    By the way, I'd be interested in hearing more from you in the future.

    Actually, it isn’t too hard or $$ to make this a playing (musical) 88. Attach small magnets to the key ends. Have a row of micro switches that close when the magnet gets close. A simple ribbon cable from the switches to the battery box/processor. It could play each note via a small speaker. Designs could have the blue tooth transmit the pressed note to the phone which an app could play a corresponding accompanying cord. Easy. Sell WAY more kits and not get flack.

    Thanks for making this video. These are the same suspicions I have about the piano as well, and what I find most disappointing is although Lego isn't lying, they are being very misleading and stretching the truth in their PR for this set. I would have rather they excluded the motor etc and cut the price like you mentioned as this is a gimmick that will probably be interesting for 5 minutes and a a couple minutes more for people who come into your home and are curious and that's it. But it's clear their goal is a) $$$ and b) building hype / promoting Lego, so everything they've done makes sense. They know that as long as they can build up the hype to critical levels, the set will sell out regardless before momentum diminishes and reviews start showing the negatives about the set.

    @royboy84 Před 4 lety +2

    I have (and love) this set, and while I see and mostly side with the issues with Lego's "playable" copy, there's another part of me that is thinking two things.
    1. All lego sets are "playable" the definition is loose. The Millennium Falcon is playable but doesn't actually have a working hyperdrive. You're right that people are going to assume that "playable" in the context of a musical instrument = musical playability, don't disagree... just more about tempered expectations which brings me to 2...
    2. This set was incredibly complex and huge. The elements don't exist that would enable unique key playback, let alone a tone generator, and I don't think there's enough in the pipeline to justify lego creating brand new pieces just for that functionality. I know this is a very engineering focused argument angle... but seriously, there'd need to be an IR sensor on every key, or they would need to find another way to figure that out, not to mention the tone generator.
    I think you present very fair commentary, but I'm a little disappointed in the reaction from the Lego community. I think focusing on the "playable" bit is far overshadowing the unique design of this amazing set. This set inspired me from the moment I saw it on Lego ideas, and I was blown away with how faithful of a recreation they were able to craft.

    I have to admit I actually was going to buy this thinking it could play ... and I was curious how Lego had achieved the ability to detect which keys were being pressed and translate to notes. Such a shame because I also thought it would be great for my younger kids to play and learn. Maybe get into learning for real. But 350 for a display piece is a lot. Great video and argument, and you're absolutely right on Lego's write up of the set - it is misleading.
    But before hearing your argument, I honestly thought it would simply be a mechanical showpeice. Every Lego brick would sound the same when hit, I thought.
    Nintendo, like you said, would never create a piano that wasn't interactive - they're all about the final experience.
    Personally, I think my issue with the set is that it has only 25 keys for such a big kit.
    88 keys and piano body that wasn't so bulky would have been awesome - and that I would buy.
    They could have even bundled a real size hammer mechanism on its own stand for educational purposes.
    So for me, it's too bulky, and 63 keys away from parting with my money. There are some great functions on this piano, but it could all have been built into a much more realistic display piece.
    So, the NES set, really awesome. But I'd feel a cheat to buy that too, since I grew up on the Atari 2600, and moved straight to the Super Nintendo. Kinda missed out on the 8-Bit generation.

    I have an idea for how they could have made it functional:
    They add rubber bands and stretch them as necessary to fit the notes. Then the hammers would hit the bands and play a sound. No electronic components needed, and it's still playable. Sure, it may not sound EXACTLY like a grand piano (edit: it would probably sound a bit more like an acoustic guitar now that I think about it) but it's still playable. Not sure how they would input the pre-recorded songs though.

    • @ThinkCleverAndSmart
      @ThinkCleverAndSmart Před 4 lety +1

      The stretched rubber bands would indeed make some sound, but not much. Also, the tension created would be far too big for any lego construction to handle. That's why real pianos have a solid cast frame (the harp) to hold the strings

    • @awesomeninja886mc2
      @awesomeninja886mc2 Před 4 lety

      @@ThinkCleverAndSmart Good point, though I can't really see an alternative.
      But the rubber bands might fit if they were stretched just past where the hammer hits them. Maybe one end would be placed around a half inch past the point where the hammer hits the band, and the rest of it stretches underneath the hammer.

    • @jameskratzer4538
      @jameskratzer4538 Před 4 lety +2

      There are contact-sensitive transistors available that LEGO could have built into bricks, in segments, to click onto mounting plates for each hammer to strike when playing the keys.
      This set is more of an adult model than a child's toy anyway, so it would have almost been a fit replacement for the canceled Osprey. But then, it may have been an incursion from Technics and Ideas into Mindstorms or Boost!, and we couldn't have that, now could we?😱

    • @penfold7800
      @penfold7800 Před 4 lety +1

      Yes and I guess, theoretically you could have it read across the hammers to determine which key was pressed, but in reality it would be totally impractical. For two simple, similar, reasons: The delay on the hammers falling back down to normal would block the other keys behind from being sensed at the right time, And Secondly, the software delay between sensor signal data, processing and playback would make anything remotely meaningfully tuneful impossible. If they had made a separate beep circuit on each key, it would have been hideously expensive, and it wouldn't have worked anyway because getting the tuning accurate with individually seperate circuits would have been near impossible. Just watching the videos from Yamaha Corp that explain the history of thier development of electronic keyboards over the years and how the mechanical aspects, and electronic circuitry work, makes it clear to me just how complicated it is.

    • @michaellacock
      @michaellacock Před 4 lety

      @@penfold7800 very good points. I was also thinking about it too, even if software was used to determine what key was pressed, it would only work with one key at a time if there is only one sensor.

      I'm not too sold on this. It feels like LEGO is pushing a number of sets toward adult fans to try to reduce the stigma around LEGO being a child's toy. The four Art mosaic sets are 18+, too, and they're literally instructions for putting the correct stud/tile in the correct spot. Like paint by numbers without the added difficulty of having to stay within the lines, and if you make a mistake, you have a brick separator handy.

    Here is what Lego should have done, the Lego piano app should use the camera to detect what keys are being pressed by the movement of the string dampers. Then the phone should produce the sound of the string being pressed. I realize more than one note might be connected to a single damper, but even limiting the piano to C major would be a better representation of what they were advertising.
