When boredom and a few too many beers strike, remarkable ideas can be born. This was precisely the case for Swedish enthusiasts Henrik Söderlund and Morgan Gerdin, who decided to embark on an audacious project: fitting a 400hp, two-stroke V8 engine into a Volvo Amazon, resulting in a mind-boggling creation that turned heads and surely annoyed neighbors. Let's delve into the story behind this wild venture and explore the unconventional marriage of a 1980s Evinrude 300XP marine V8 and the iconic Volvo 120.
.Inspiration struck the creators when they were under the influence of alcohol. Henrik recalls the moment, saying, "It came to us when we were drunk. I had the motor in my boat. It was in the garage for some service and tuning. I happened to park the boat with the engine hanging next to the Amazon, and a few beers later the picture cleared." Little did they know that this seemingly boozy epiphany would lead to an extraordinary automotive experiment.
The heart of this unique vehicle is a 3.6-liter Evinrude 300XP two-stroke marine V8, which originated from the 1980s era. Henrik and Morgan ingeniously shoehorned this potent engine into the body of the Volvo Amazon, giving birth to a fusion of automotive and marine technologies. The original engine produced 340hp on the crank, but with the addition of customized expansion chambers, extensive porting, and electronic fuel injection (EFI), the power output is expected to increase significantly.
While the precise power band of this unconventional creation remains unknown, the enthusiasts have already revved it up to 5200rpm. However, the tuned expansion chambers are designed for up to 6500rpm, and with a rev limit set at 8500rpm, there is immense untapped power waiting to be unleashed. Henrik confidently states, "With the pipes, extensive porting and EFI, it should make more!" The prospect of further tuning promises even more breathtaking performance from this Swedish masterpiece.
Now they didn’t stop with the engine swop, To accommodate the massive power of the two-stroke V8, the creators made several modifications to the vehicle. They fitted a customized Powerglide transmission and a Volvo/Dana four-link rear end, ensuring optimal power delivery and control. Additionally, a pair of colossal 33×10.5-inch drag slicks provides the necessary grip to harness the car's potential. Remarkably, only 30kg of the original structure of the Volvo Amazon remains intact, resulting in a svelte weight of 683kg. This substantial weight reduction, combined with the awe-inspiring power output, should enable the Swedish creation to tear down the strip with astonishing speed.

Less jabbering and more engine sound.
Dude for reallll. I'm out half way thru the vid.
The running videos have been on CZcams for years. It's nice to finally learn more about it
Yup! 20 seconds content crammed into 6 minutes..
And that accent ffs 😮
Shut up , Play more engine noise
Being overtaken by that on the road, you would think a gang of motorcycles from the 70s overtook you, the sound and the smell!
Just great! 🤘
I miss my dual disc 72 Kawasaki H2, god I should've never sold that thing when I moved from Florida in the early 00s 😢
Doubt that car will ever get plates in sweden.
@@znoop72 neither here in Switzerland
@@rjung_ch i like two strokes. but it just polutes too muich
The exhaust system takes up more room than the engine itself :O
That's where all the power is made.😊
@@Ruslan.88266 Indeed it is.
High tuned 4 strokes are said to be "cammy"
2 strokes are said to be pipe-y
In 1976 the FIM decided that road race bikes had to have silencers (I use that word very loosely).
Killed off the 4 strokes (MV Agusta) but improved the strokers
IIRC, they widened the powerband
These guys are not only great Car Designers but also terrific Sound Engineers
5:08 if you're tired of him talking over the exhaust and just want to hear it
45 sec engine sound, 6 min of talking.
Thank you.
Let's show all kinds of two strokes, including a GPz in a *tunnel*, and not let you hear any sound from that. That'll bring in the clicks!
Good Lord! Thank you 🙄🙄🙄
This thing is sick, hopefully the guys still have it and are putting it to use.
Side note though, there's a kid with the same or very similar engine(Evinrude 2 stroke V8) that's currently trying to swap it into a 70's Datsun 510 on CZcams, like currently currently, a quick search will find you his channel.
That's what brought me here. Those engines are grouse!
Hartwick Performance.
Johnny Cash had a 572 CID 2 stroke v8 in his cadillac but it was Etec DFI
I will never not love how 2-stroke engines sound
THIS IS AN OUTSTANDIING ACHEIVEMENT! I LOVED MY TM 400 AND STILL LOVE MY H2 750. I'VE BEEN BUILDING 2 STROKES SINCE THE 80s BUT THIS IS IMPRESSIVE. GREAT JOB!
I have been wondering what happened to that car since I first saw the video and 2014... the very long time to wait for an update and, but I am very glad that you did. Any more information you can dig up about them about the car anyting, I would be highly interested. Thank you for editing this together and posting it.
Clever guys, and testament to the genius powers of alcohol!
Such a badass unique project. It's like a giant dirt bike with the comfort of a car
That's the "goodest" Volvo I've ever heard! 😉
Great project and thanks for bringing it to us.
I'd loved to see the completed job.
Sounds absolutely insane!
Looks really quick, love it!
It does!
Hi and thank´s for Your videos.
Those builds are very common here in Sweden, dating back to seventies and still going on....
But as a dedigatet gear head/rally driver, my self, I have never heard of that one!
I´ll try to find it here.
from a Finn in Diaspora
That sound when he gets down on it
It has the added bonus of spraying 2 stroke oil all over the drag strip so everybody that goes after you will have to contend with that and get slower times.
Depends if the oil is mixed in the petrol tank or is injected in from a separate tank
Still gets spit out the exhaust either way.
Music to the ears.
I love it. Very impressive. There’s another guy attempting the same build. Hart wick performance. I doubt he can pull it off like this car. The exhaust the exspansion chambers is genius.
Awesomeness i wish there was a resolution/finish vid
Ive never heard a v8 sound like that 🔥
Perhaps these lads could take it to a track day event
That's what hot rodding is all about. So good and who cares how fast it is at the end of the day? It's fkn epic
I had a 68 123 gt ...fun, saved my life
I've seen nitro methane turbo VW drag rail that had a spring loaded powerglide 2 speed transmission kick ass! Spring loaded onstead of hydraulically operated is way simpler, less weiight and stronger. It was designed mainly to not come apart.
My 1967 chevelle with 327 and powerglide could nearly hit 100 mph in low.......
Ive always been a Kawasaki KH and S triple fan. Ive had at least 10 different models. My S2 350cc triple had Denco pipes and porting along with brand new Weisco pistons. It was a beast.
I’ve been following that build, it’s called the Rudzon, and they haven’t uploaded anything else in years
Incredible
Skip the first 5 minutes. You are welcome.
No mosquitos in that neighborhood.
I remember seeing that on Engine Swap Depot maybe 98 years ago (or longer). That thing is total insanity. But in a good way.
Snyggt jobbat
Saw a video some time back of a 750 Suzuki 2 stroke triple, substantially modified, if I remember correctly, swapped into a Trabant. Can't find it now.
I can't remember exactly when, but I think it was the mid 70s to early 80s when 2 stroke outboards began to disappear! There is a Marina with a Boat Sales Dealership near me! What's unbelievable are the huge V10 and V12 4 Stroke Outboards!!
You are mistaken on the time frame of 2 strokes going away.
Primarily in the past 10 years. Due to emissions requirements. Look up mercury 300xs
Evinrude was the last with a full lineup of 2 strokes. Canadian company Bombardier bought Evinrude then shut them down in 2020. The oldest existing US boat motor manufacturer.
The 2 stroke Etec motors had lower emissions than the 4 strokes. Because they used direct injection not fake efi injection.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evinrude_Outboard_Motors
2 stroke outboards were made up until the late 2000's here in the USA, and are still made in most countries around the world since they dont need to contend with the EPA's stupid restrictions. 2 stroke outboards polluted so little they hardly even registered, but SUV's and "light trucks" can spew whatever that want.
That was unfortunate. All talk and one tiny sound bite ! Wasted my time on that one.
That's insane amazing 😮
It's between 390 and 550bhp depending on what Evinrude V8 it has.
There was something about this on TurboBricks WAY back when. Not sure if the O.G.Poster was the builder.
Awesome!
isnt this reupload of 2014-2017 videos, from 2017 there is no updates, so did they leave the project ??
Sick!
No stop we demand more!
Could you pls do a video about the hydrogen coalition that Toyota is having with other Japanese car companies?
Yes i can😂. Im also busy with a video of the big 4 from japan, partnering up for hydrogen motorcycles
Oo oo!! Do one about 6 strokes too!!
Minder kakpraat.
We want to hear it's nuts!
The builders call it the "Rudizon" and yes I too would like to know more about it and see it finished.
I know how projects can be though, life gets in the way sometimes. Or everytime 😉
Rudezon.
the Facebook page has uploaded 2 images of the engine in 2022 so I think they are back on it 😅
View mass-produced that engine make your money back for all your engineering work and I would definitely buy one of your engines and all of my 2-stroke Buddies
I wonder if they have taken the Amazon engine and marinisised it and mounted in the boat?
I paused the video at 3:55 (full screen mode) ... switched off the lights in the room, stood several metres from my laptop screen, then looked through a pin-hole in a sheet of paper and the front of the car (engine bay area) appears with the face of a haunting satanic character. Once you see it, you cannot 'unsee' it.
I do that to every video I watch
These engines are too dirty for the road...PUT THEM ON THE OCEAN. Brilliant reasoning there
Mmmm good idea 💡 👌 thankyou
Smell the magic.
I have a straight 6 2 stroke 1.2 litre mercury boat motor I plan to put in a car at some stage.
Would love to see that engine in a Nissan 1400 bucky
looks alike, exhaust is where normally is intake! is this some kind illusion or what?
There is an egregious lack of engine sound in this video.
All the motor is a Johnson or evinrude xp 250 or xp 300 outboard motor with 3.6 litre displacement or about 220 cubic inches
Australian reinvented the two stroke back in the 80's that out did the projected 2020 emissions standards Ford bought the patent in 91 said they were going to introduce it in out board motors first never have I seen it anywhere !
I got 155rear wheel hp out of my RG500's (had 2) And it was not even that hard... The worst part was getting a swing arm on that thing that fitted a rear tire wider than 130, to get any use for the power. So, this 3.8... I should not be too hard to tune for 1500+ since it got tuned for 10 seconds at full power between check ups, instead of road traffic. I wonder what it ended up with on the dyno?
I love the staccato nature of a South African English accent.....
My god the emissions.
Completely bonkers.
8 angry chainsaws
Did you meet the maker?
An angry 8cy chainsaw
I'm sure it got wrapped around sonething...hope I'm wrong and it's still raging.
A bit too much talking without containing much information. Does the original Volvo front end go back on?
Look at the filth coming out of that
The video starts at 2:34. You get to hear the engine at 5:00.

Bet you if you post all the material you have here with all the original audio you'll get 10 times the views. I've been seeing this V8 since I was 16 but nobody ever made a real video about it, and I've seen some videos here that I think I've never seen
The reason it is not seen usually as it is totally impractical. Like many things it can be done,, but you have to ask WHY.
Because they can, simple as that 👍
5:03
Not trying to be rude but why was there 5 minutes and 3 seconds worth of chatter...
49hp from 250 cm³?😂😂😂 My GF250 4-stroke Suzuki makes 44hp from 250 cm³. So I don't see a big advantage from the 2-stroke in this example... 😝
I think it's about that much
What happened to this? Last update waa 7 years ago tgen full darkness on youtube.
its called rudezon
could be 440 bhp or even 500.
So when is the "in car" video being posted,,,,,oh yeah, has to have a full spectrum of drive scenarios as well,,,,puh,,,,leeeeez
Shut up for 30 seconds so we can hear this thing
Bruv, if you just want to hear the car, go and watch a pure sound. My channel isnt a pure sound channel. I like what I do, if you don't, don't watch it friend.

Dang, i was hoping for an update on this vehicle, but jt was just the same clips ive already seen, rehashed by some clown 🤡
Way too much talking dude...only one little snippet at the end where we actually got to hear it
Too smokey. Too bad they didn't use an engine with oil injection like the Etec. And why only a 2 speed automatic? The Mercury 600hp V-12 would be better.
its running double oil. once warmed up, smoke is a non issue with 50:1 or even 100:1. they are also running it pig rich to extend its life.
Iv been watching it closely for years on and off and from what I can tell it's a 9 sec car and about 550-600hp although I haven't seen dyno data. I will say for the engine to be in a drag car they did this wrong. By that I mean these things with pipes and stock ports dont come online until 6-7krpm those pipes should be set up to work up in the 7-10k rpm range and the limiter should be 10500or 11. But their swedes I have confidence they'll figure it out. I'd expect based off similar builds over the years It can make a healthy 800or so hp but I bet you can shove a crap ton of n2o down its throat and make whatever he needs even now. But fi and 2 strokes are kinda a pain di is really the way to go although that much more complicated. Not to say it cant be done in an aftermarket setting just that it's hard. The oems put injectors in transfer ports and such for a reason if you look at jet skis and scooters and mx bikes. This is pretty hard to add after the engine is made. I also belive he is injecting even further down stream at the tb making this problem worse is the fact it's made to be mounted on the flywheel although gravity would work better upside down from what it is.
no. the F1 V8 put out around 450hp, and had a 150hp shot of nitrous for the world record attempt. even at 450hp, it would have a 30 hr service life max. the F1 of the 1980's was far more advanced than this stock powerhead.
Go to 5:05 to 5:30 to hear the engine
Well at least it makes for good you tube content.
I've never cared much for 2-strokes myself just because if they're not in tip top condition they are not reliable at all. You never know if they're going to start up when you want them to, you have to carry spare spark plugs and wrenches, crankshaft seals always wear out and create vacuum leaks that cause the engine to run lean and burn pistons, and then cylinders usually go out with the pistons.
And what about when the oil gets broken down by the gasoline, how much lubrication is still there when the oil is all saturated down by the gasoline???
Yes, electric fuel injection is probably the best thing to ever happen to a 2-stroke engine, but look at how much fuel they waste, could that car ever be used as a daily driven mass production vehicle?
They smoke almost as much as an old coal burning locomotive steam train...
I wonder how much global warming there would be in the world today if the 2-stroke engine were the only option.
Makes me think about the Trabant, I think Saab made one also, strangest cars on the planet.
in an outboard, they are EXTREMELY reliable. in my 35 years as an outboard mechanic, i've only seen bad crank seals on motors from the early 70's and older. gasoline does not "break down" oil! If they are stored properly, carb issues are rare. but 99% of issues are because the owner used old fuel, or didnt maintain and use the correct oil, or overloaded the boat, water in fuel etc. smoke is non-existent or very little once the motor warms up and synthetic is used. the motor you see here is running rich AND using 25:1 oil mix since its running on the ragged edge.
You've clearly had some crappy 2-strokes. Try a good one.
Maybe let listen to the engine more and not you talking so much 😵💫
My god it sounds horrible 😬
Click bait bullshit, where’s this car at now ?
dont forget that 4 stroke have more torqeu then two stroke
By that logic you'd drive diesels only.
