  • This is an edited version of my original video lesson. In the previous version, I played the entire song as part of the lesson. This was deemed a copyright violation. CZcams pulled the video. The good news is this lesson will teach you a very accurate way to play the song.

This is the best video for learning this song I've seen anywhere. I watched Nancy Wilson do her version, but she doesn't really explain it very well.
I followed everything pretty well until the fourth part, then I couldn't tell what you were doing with some of the phrases. I'm blind, so I think some of it was shown, but not described.

By barring the B and D strings and then playing the open A and E it allows people like me with fat stubby fingers to play to play that chord with all the strings ringing. Great Tip! Thanks…

Jon Paul Jones wrote it..It's obvious watching the 2 play. JP Jones is far more accomplished as a Mando player. IF you listen closely to the original recording... it's 2 mandolins, thus the confusion over some of the chords.

I saw JPJ close up on his solo tour a number of years back. Not only is he an extraordinary bassist but also a great mando player and slide player. Many custom instruments played: mandolin, octave mandolin, "the" triple neck, standard slide and bass slide and many basses with different stringing. Definitely the 'guitar hero' that night. And not forgetting keyboards. Truly gifted and probably unequalled.

Love playing my mando. I don't know jack $h1+ about theory, but just enough to know that the triads of some chords have notes that are part of other chords. When he talks about B and F# this rings that bell. And because I the mandolin has only 4 open note strings, inversions of chords sound like other chords. This, along with the fact that the mandolin's strings are tuned and octave above the corresponding guitar strings give the mando it's different subtle character.

Would suggest Page doesn't use his thumb over the G&D strings for the Am G Am C parts, but does for the 3rd part of the song playing D, going down in the G position as you called it 7:27 which makes it far easier for those runs. Thanks so much for you help in this.

Butch is right the dominant mandolin playing in all of Zeps studio & live tunes is all John paul Jones, jimmy only played it live to accompany John's virtuosity in the very early days where John would play a soloing type of style over jimmy. The only reason jimmy plays it on battle of evermore is because its all chordal the rest of their repertoire like going to california, thats the way, hey hey what can I do, and battle of evermore (studio version) is all John Paul Jones. On the studio version of battle of evermore, that is John Paul playing all the (doubled) mandolin parts with jimmy only
playing acoustic guitar. How do I know? Didn't read it somewhere just my ears listening to the level of ability being applied on the instrument tells me its John's mandolin work we are hearing. Amazing player: think about it bassist, guitarist, mandolin, piano, mellotron, organ with footwork, and orchestral arranger

Is that a Gibson “F” style mandolin? A bit of trivia is the Gibson “F” style mandolin was the original inspiration for the white guitar Prince used at the end of the movie "Purple Rain."
In the 70s a man named Jeffrey Levin made a Bass guitar based on the look of the Gibson. He did not like it and he put it up for sale. In 1979ish, Prince bought it. In 1983, when they were getting ready to make the movie they took the bass to a man named David Rusan to make a guitar version as a prop for the movie.
On a side note the song "Purple Rain" was mostly recorded live at the night club from the movie and he used a Mad Cat Hohner telecaster knock off...

YOur mandolin is such a beautiful instrument that, putting that orange strap over the curl really detracts it's beauty. It's like musicians who put duct tape and stickers on a Gibson ES-semi hollow guitar with F-holes.
