  • The Espelette pepper aka Piment d’Espelette is a variety of Capsicum annuum that is cultivated in the French commune of Espelette, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, traditionally the northern territory of the Basque people. Seeds were sent the other year by my mate Marc in Belgium, grew and today Charlotte and 1 have a crack at it to see what its like.
The plants get stocky in pots and get to around 60cm tall, the pods get to around 8-10 cm long and 3-4 cm wide, they start off green and turn red once ripe, pretty productive plants so will get quite a few
    What’s it Like?
    How Hot is It?
Crunchy, juicy fruity/tangy slightly sweet with a slight apple tinge, really nice. We both love the flavour, the flavour stays and could still taste it even after the video ended so it goes a while. The flavour is more pronounced once they are dried
Heat, does have a bit, hit in the back of the throat and tongue, round jalapeno heat but a deep burn that moves forward till the whole mouth has a nice glow. The burn travelled really well although not that hot, Its around mid heat
After an amazing flavoured chilli that doesn’t rip your head off then this is definitely the go, would make an excellent powder or even just dried or freshly chopped into any food.
Thanks Marc for sending the seeds, these are really cool.

I'm from the area, and I've been dying to be able to grow them in Oz.
Espelette chillies are awesome pickled, with cured ham, stuffed with cheese, you can have them green too. Use them in stews... Ooooh I miss my chillies

Thanks guys. I think Espelette is usually sold dried and flaked for culinary purpose.
