In Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 historical revenge fantasy Inglourious Basterds, U.S. Army Lieutenant Aldo Raine, played by Brad Pitt, recruits the titular Basterds - a squad of Jewish soldiers - to wreak havoc behind Nazi lines during World War II. In the process, they cross paths with a parallel British mission and a revenge plot by a French Jewish woman and succeed in gunning down Adolf Hitler and most of the Nazi high command in a burning French theatre. Ridiculous Hollywood nonsense, right? Well, not as much as you might think for not only did Allied Intelligence actually concoct a plan - dubbed Operation Foxley - to assassinate Hitler, but they also recruited a large number of Jewish refugees to conduct secret operations behind enemy lines. And by far the most successful of these, carried out in the dying days of the war, succeeded in saving thousands of lives and a key Austrian city from unnecessary destruction. This is the story of Operation Greenup, the real-life Inglourious Basterds.

We would miss you and your multiple/dimensional channels, if they delete you, please don't 🤣
So, in order to use this service, first you have to give THEM your personal info? Like, ALL of it? What's the worst that could happen? 🤷🤦
"he raised his hands in defeat LIKE A BOSS" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
"war is not fair, the rules of war are to win" is a certified banger sentence
I've heard that often. War has but 1 rule. Try to win
War doesn't determine who is right, war determines who is left.
The objective of war is to impose your will upon the enemy
I can only imagine how frustrating it would have been to end up in front of Adolf but in a situation where you can do nothing about it but play along with the ruse and hope to make it out.
The way you say basterds is a great impersonation of Mike Meyers 👏😂
Thank you for this story. You could make years worth of content with operations from WW2 and medal of honor records
My dad participated in the Dieppe raid. He passed in 94.

This story was destined to become a movie. Amazing stuff.
Thank you Daven for not ruining this video with over the top effects.
I went to Innsbruck this past June for my Honeymoon. An amazing city, one of the most beautiful places I've ever been - the Zoo is especially amazing. I never even knew about this, despite visiting several museums there. Incredible story.
I kinda like seeing other staff members of Simon’s channels do things like the ad reads. It gives us a tiny peek behind the curtain.
Thanks for another amazing video. It never fails to astound me how many utter bad-asses there were during WW2 and how so many of them have gone unrecognised for so long. Truly the greatest generation.
Fantastic video as always! I would love to see a video on gertrude sanford legendre … American heiress, explorer, socialite, and spy
Being from Europe, born in London, May 3, 1944, have been to many
places mentioned in this story,
after returning to visit. We went

Wait? Meyers lived in Charles Town, WV?!? I pratically grew up there in the 90s. I learn something new every day
Inglorious, indeed! Took the government decades before their efforts got recognized.
Quentin will leave no stone un turned. He's brilliant in his adventures.
Now thats a movie that needs to happen
Look at that Ichiro bobble head! Love it

What a movie, lol!
Great story! I love WW2 history….especially little known facts like this.
I've lead quite a quiet life really in the great scheme of things .... And most probably because of people like this. I shall think twice about moaning because the traffic is bad on my way to work in the morning.
Simon tells a story like few others.. It's hard to tell if it's the content, his narration, the writing or all bloody 3. All i know is i enjoy all Bloody 3. Thank you for another great video ❤
@TodayIFoundOut thank you for all you all do for these stories. I wanted to bring a couple of stories to the attention of the writers for this channel? I'm not sure where exactly they would fit, but this seems like my best bet. For context, I'm a U.S. citizen who was just barely old enough to be watching, and be greatly impacted by, the events of 9/11. And there are two amazing stories from then that don't get the attention they deserve. One is of the ferries who evacuated people from New York until it was safe to return. The other is of Gander Newfoundland. A sleepy little town and airport who took in and helped all of the air traffic that had to be redirected from US Atlantic Airspace. So many people were helped for both of these, and those involved just don't get enough love for it. I doubt I'll see anything on these anytime soon, but I thought I'd put it out there. Thank you for your time.
It's pretty crazy the great amount of times the austrian painter was nearly assassinated, only for him to do the job himself in his bunker like "Amateurs, look how a true profesional does a good work". Heck, even the ending crawl of the movie "Valkyrie" said: "Bro was so unkillable his murderer could only be him"
Ironically I find one of his landscapes to be relaxing in my bedroom. Quite the conversation PEACE LOL😅
@@EmmanuelBritoI've seen some of his work he was pretty good
He was nothing if not a lucky little prick
no one can prove he killed himself because today, no one knows where is body is lying.
"Austrian painter" is a weirdly revisionist way to describe a genocidal mad man
There is a documentary on this, with interviews with the survivors- even more dramatic than presented here!
Please do the X-Troop story soon!
“On one occasion he responded to an employer’s antisemitic joke by punching him out cold” LEGEND
One of my favorite actors to play Adolf H was Günter Meisner, who played the Austrian painter in the comedy “Ace of Aces,” the miniseries “Winston Churchill: the Wilderness Years,” and the 1983 epic show “Winds of War.” It is in this last production that Meisner shined his magnificent ability to bring the German dictator to life. He did such a good job that even the great Robeet Mitchum probably thought while he was working with him: "Damn, not even I can compete with this mf."
Good grief! These true stories should be made into movies!
I’d love to see Dankula do a Mad Lads on Operation Greenup
I didn't realize Gilles wrote for your videos. Unless this is the first time. I enjoy his content too
Gilles has been writing for us for a few years. He's the best. :-) -Daven
He should’ve went for Hitlers autograph, Indiana Jones style! Granted Hitler just gave it to Indy rather he wanted it or not, but it was still funny.
This smoke so loud when the guy came on to do the ad, I thought it was Simon from an older video with hair and a baby beard
Wow! Simon doesn't even do his own ads anymore?!
FactBoi moving up in the YT world.
Pretty sure thats the owner of the youtube channel mate. Simon gets paid to do the voice work for this channel and a few others.
Quentin Tarantino is single handedly responsible for the misspelling of the word BASTARDS.
Most people I know spell it bass turds, ain't real sure what a bastard is 😂😂😂
The word was misspelled on purpose
If Quentin Tarantino is that deep then.. i wonder if ..Kill Bill is actually some allegorical story about sex trafficking 🤔.
I personally always spell it 'basterds' now, despite knowing that is incorrect.
Or, is it? Language evolves over time. I think basterds is better spelled with the e, and I refuse to ever go back.
@@slartybarfastb3648 bass turds 💩
Great work
Fact Boi officially has too many channels. When you need to bring in a stunt beard for the ad read, you have taken on too much. Can you at least find a stunt beard that sounds more like Mr Whistler?
Good one! I got that impression as well
Can we get one on Jake McNasty McNeice???
If he was born in 1921 how could he serve in WW1?
I believe that was his father he was referring to
Everyone lied about their age to get in.
Think my grandfather was 15 MAYBE 16.

Naw ill just get cussed out ive been cussed out before.. a true line in the army very true
Fred Meyer!
BBC2 or BBC4 Made a great drama/documentary( not normally a fan of those but this was v good!) about Operation Foxley, look it up, I'm sure it'll be on YT!
6:01 is that a real hand drawn map or AI generated? Im on a cell. Cant get better details.
I want some more info on this image. My gut says its legit. But, I wanna go down the cartographer rabbit hole.
I've doodled maps. I really enjoyed it.

Daven and Simon or Simon and Daven are Lizard Overlords. Allegedly. IMHO. Cheers from Tennessee
YOU OWE ME A DEBIT
Learn something new all the time about WW2.
I'm fascinated by the creation of the SOE and wonder if many Jewish emigres joined those ranks as well?
Which images were generated? None that I could see. Either wartime photos or concentration camp museums, looks like.
The balls on these guys
Wow
Don't you find it wild that until the very recent decades open racism was just a common thing. And in different parts of the world still a thing. And throughout history there's been plenty of that "those not like us are lower people". Some for more practical and some for more ideological reasons. It's quite baffling living in a society that considers people fairly equal that it's a rather recent idea in such general scale. Of course there's always been humanists just as there's been very protectionistic or hateful people.
Is DeleteMe legitimate? I'm only asking because I bought a Ridge wallet solely based on the fact they sponsored one of Simon's videos, and it was easily the dumbest I've ever felt after making a purchase. The box it comes in is fancier than the actual "wallet". Thankfully I was able to return it.
Yo Simon!! Who did the plug?? (Ad read) Is that one of the writers?? I need to know!! Please!?!?
Co-founder of the channel, editor here, occasional host, and yep, one of the writers. :-) It's a living. :-) -Daven

Thanks for covering this story, it's a good one and always has been. Ladies and Gents, learn a foreign language. Take care, crew.
I have been thinking lately on how maybe it was better that Hitler survived these assassination plot becuse he was such an incompetent general. If he was replaced by a militarily smarter dictator then we might have lost.
Not just incompetent, but a little loopy at the end. We have a video on this and why on our sister channel Highlight History on how Hitler's flatulence defeated Nazi Germany. :-) Sounds click bait, but it is not. :-) -Daven

What mistakes?
I came here for Simon as soon as the other guy pops up I'm out.
This probably would have been a great video If I Had watched it. Do your own add read Simon
Eww ai pictures
As much as I loved Inglorious Basterds, I think these stories would still make a great movie.
😃
thanks, super content as usual. however, if you can't avoid using AI generated images, could you at least add a "AI generated image" label/text at least?
Why?
@Free-dv2vm Since when doing a fact base channel and using images, probably good to make sure the audience knows whether we are looking at real images or not.
How many subreddits do you moderate?
@@route2070counterpoint: don’t use CZcams to learn history

My biggest question from all this is still why the hell did Brad Pitt not bath or use deodorant during the filming of this movie? Christopher Waltz rules btw.
A Tarantino thing for sure
My grandfather on my mom’s was not in one of those OSS Jewish special forces groups but his older brother was. No one in my family knew that my grand uncle was in the OSS but they did know he was in a special group that only comprised of Jewish men.
My grand uncle told it to no one to the grave not even telling his wife but a week before my grandfather died he told the remaining family everything. My grandfather did accounting and paperwork work for the United States Army during the war especially for many special operations. He did not have any real action the last 4 months of the war.
The information about what my grandfather uncle did during the war was supposed to become public in 2016 but the Trump administration pushed it back to 2025. If Trump becomes president again it could be pushed back to 2040. The Trump family helped a lot of Nazi’s get on their feet in America post operation Paperclip.
Trump’s father actually sued everyone in my grand uncle’s unit before he died. Thankfully my grand uncle’s unit won the lawsuit.
I still don’t know exactly what my grand uncle did but we do know his Nazi kill count and it is like video game numbers.
Very interesting, ty for sharing
So trumps family is to blame for operation paperclip? Fuck me, you got purple hair ay😂
Me, I know who I am....

Im not fond of the new ads. 😒👎
idk, it makes it a snap to scrub past it.
So you mean to tell me there was a real group of people who tortured nazi's in the name of freedom?
hope they got charged with war crimes.
Is this host AI generated? Seems he’s narrating half the videos on CZcams lately.
He lost all credibility going to Wisconsin.
As always American movies account for about 20% of reality
You guys really need to stop using AI images in your videos.
Yeah dropping this channel. Several of your followers have called out the shady use of ai images, of which you CAN avoid using, you just refuse not to, and instead of hearing us out, you've simply removed their label thinking no one would notice. Unsubscribing now.
As soon as I saw the AI gen image in the video. I stopped watching and vomitted and unsubscribed. I would now lobe to regale you with a slew of curses and insts at everyone on your team - but I dont want to get banned, so instead I will
simply say that I see another in a future video I will block you.
I understand Simons desire for more funds by passing off channels etc, and in this case ads, to third parties, but the Whistlerverse is a mono man world. I just don't and can't listen to the rest.
Simon isn't passing off anything. We started this channel together ten years ago and I've always been here. 😋 -Daven
Stop calling people by their last names. Call them by their first names.
What Glorious bastards !!!
👍👏❤❤👏👍
lol why are people so bothered about ai art
PLEASE tell me you're not using AI-stolen images... 🤦
Really disappointed in the casual use of AI art at 8:33. Seems out of character for a show that seems pretty diligent about historical accuracy and citing sources to be using images made by an algorithm that amalgamates images from the labor of anonymized artists, unpaid. Will unsubscribe if I see it again
My grandfather was German but was fighting in the Pacific.
I always wondered what he'd do if made to fight Germany.
My grandfather was a full blown Nazi.
