  • Hi and welcome back to another video on our Budget Build Mini Clubman.
    In this video we remove the rear quarter panel from the drivers side of the car now if you can remember from the previous episode I replaced the inner waist band. So now its time to get this off, first time doing this. I now know how it all fits so its a case of getting some repairs done and going from there.

    Ballsy effort bloke! Not sure how comfortable I would be exposing that much in one go. Well done. Yet another example of all the little areas left unprotected in a mini when the built them. All those seams with no seam sealer at all.

      Pat Adamson Cheers Pat yes it’s was a case of come on Marc just get it done and very glad it’s off now I can get to all that hidden rust and make that panel nice and straight again. Don’t worry seam sealer will be going on this time.

    Marc, Nice surprise that it was less rusty behind the rear quarter than you thought, Cheers Dave

    Did this same panel replacement on the nearside took my time as it was a job i hadn't done before ..turned out to one of the easiest panels to replace . It was only a magnum panel costing about £ 50. But it fitted like a glove with hardly any cutting and hammering .so with that in mind i had no hesitation in replacing the drivers side ...different story lol took about 2 days to get it fitting right .i found amoung other things it was sittng too high for the window to close ....
    Something you might want to watch out for yourself cheers .

      jim maxwell Hey thanks for those tips I will definitely be looking out for those. So far on a trial fit it’s ok but needs a little fettling. This panel is a magnum one to so will just take my time with it. Thanks for watching Jim and glad yours went on ok in the end 👍

    Thanks.. yeah the one you isn't a full 1/4 panel but I have seen them like I say around £55 mark that have the rear lower window section in! Think these maybe easier to fit as no stitch welding to do! So hopefully will be a nicer finish (hopefully 😀) this is my first mini & first time welding lol.. I'm learning a lot from such as yourself & others takes some of the daunting feeling out of it..

      @SimpsonsClassics  Před 4 lety +1

      Richard Walker yeah mine is from just below the window basically which sort her out. I am glad I can be of some help it’s a case of taking your time and checking all the time to. I am sure you will smash it.

      Simpson’s Classics Thankyou mate you sure are I was trying to find out on CZcams to see best way but your way seems the best way to do it as my rear panels are aweful in need of full new panels at the back and yeah you seem to have got the right idea :) nice one I’ll follow on did you brace it or will it be okay to do one side at a time

  • @becko1969

    Looking at the hidden rust you have found , I would be so tempted to change the other side also ... yes a hit to the budget but I think would be worth it

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  Před 4 lety

      Chris Beck Yeah I am glad I took it off now as it was the only way to get rid of all the rust. The other side has already been done and looks like a good job so will be leaving that and getting wax everywhere 👍

    Minus one and outside working on the clubman, brrrrrr I give up when it's colder than 10C but my body is used to Aussie temperatures. Have been working in the shed when it's over 35C. One day last year it was 50.1 C in the shed, No i wasn't working. I suppose it's what you need to do or get used to. Love this build.

      Stewart Palmer Yeah it’s far to cold out side out the moment but can’t sit still and get very limited time outside to get these jobs done. I would love a nice warm workshop 👍

    I was nervous for you taking that panel out but I needn't have been because you got it out spot on. That shell really isn't bad at all for its age and is coming together really well.

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  Před 4 lety +1

      Graeme W aha I was to lol. Yes it’s off and ready for some repairs now. No this really isn’t a bad shell hence picking away at it as much as I can.

      Graeme W Thanks I appreciate that comment I hope it will look nice however it won’t be a concourse car I build them to be used but I always do the best I car with things. When it comes to rebuild time it will be a case of raiding my spares and seeing what I can put together aha

    • @graemew7001
      @graemew7001 Před 4 lety +1

      @@SimpsonsClassics Yes Marc I know its not going to be a quick build, I've seen what you have on this year and busy isn't the word! I don't like concourse cars because no car is ever that analy put together when brand new so its a dumb idea IMO, I have OCD and even I wouldn't restore to that degree 😂

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  Před 4 lety

      Graeme W aha yes got loads on this year and it’s mad tbh but definitely want to get this one painted in the spring so I can start to put it back together. Yeah I guess is a personal view but a lot of these cars were never this nice new so why go that far. But it’s all on what you like and the finish your desire 👍

    This is one beautifully clear video of how to do this job. I was aware of the reinforcing panel behind the lock and wondered how you would go about removing the rear quarter panel without cutting into it. How rust free is that shell!

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  Před 4 lety

      Michael Roberts cheers thanks I was very careful when cutting that off but luckily it went well some more work to do now then the new panel can go on.

    Great video mate, only just got round to watching it as I’m due very soon to start on my quarters. Has put my mind at ease watching this and I’ve been massively looking into which panel to use (heritage or magnum)
    Can’t wait for the next one 👍🏻

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  Před 4 lety +1

      Micky Clark Hey thanks for watching yeah it was my first time doing a quarter so hopefully it goes well. I have a magnum one but if you can afford it definitely do heritage ones. The 89 build will have two heritage ones on. Saying that the magnum one appears to fit pretty well.

    • @mickyclark8788
      @mickyclark8788 Před 4 lety +1

      A few of my smaller panels are heritage, well the ones that matter anyways. As with all minis the cost just spirals out of control lol.

    Hi mate things are shaping up!.. I wanted to ask I know it's a budget build so I'm guessing there magnum rear 1/4 panels.. do they seem a good fit?? As this is something I'm doing with mine but considering heritage panels for this but there is there is a big price difference £55 magnum £135 heritage 👍 cheers Rich

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  Před 4 lety

      Richard Walker Thanks Richard yes once this is on that sorts the drivers side apart from the front end. Yes this is a magnum quarter panel. My first attempt but after some research it seems they are a nice fit and work well. The only issue is they don’t quite come high enough, this depends how rusty your car is i guess so I will need to make a small section which you will see in coming episodes. There is a massive price difference so it’s definitely worth trying these I think.
