Nice! I guess it comes from the Spanish verb: parar. "¡Para!" is also "stop!" in Spanish imperative. :)

La preposición para
1) destinatorio, receptor - Hice este té para ti.
2) Destino - Ya vamos para allá.
3) citas/plazos(deadlines,periods) - La tarea es para la próxima semana
4) Opiniones - para mí que estás mintiendo
5) Trabajo - Mi primo trabaja para el gobierno.
6 & 7) Instrucciones y aspiraciones - Para hacer un pastel se necesita harina, huevos,
azúcar y mantequilla. Para ser médico hay que tener estudiar mucho y dormir mucho.
8) Uso o propósitos - Uso este suéter para no tener frío.

Yes, the single r in the middle of a Spanish word IS correctly pronounced in Spanish like the d sound in “ladder”. You heard correctly.
