  • Can molecules help lead the war against cancer?
In this talk, Dr. Patrick Gunning describes the seemingly insurmountable challenges that a medicinal chemist and drug discovery team face in their efforts to identify new drug molecules.
Scientist and visionary, Patrick Gunning is making remarkable breakthroughs in the realm of cancer research. Dr. Gunning is most known for his discovery of a drug that cured breast cancer, multiple myelomas and acute lymphoblastic leukemia in mice, which also has potential to eliminate cancerous cells in human patients.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I am keenly aware of the motivation and passion for designing drugs that target cancer cells and do not harm non-cancer cells. As a medicinal chemist, I have been working on the design of telomerase inhibitors for 10 years. While pursuing my education in PhD, I have designed, developed, and validated potent agents that specifically inhibits human telomerase enzyme within the low micro-molar range, strengthening its likelihood of being a clinically effective drug with minimal side effects. It was really impressive and fantastic lecture. Best Regards, Faezeh Shirgahi

Along the same lines-------I had a friend that worked with me that said he had leukemia. The worst kind, and that he wasnt feeling well. I heard about a treatment from a naturopath that was effective and suggested he try it. He said his kemo treatments were no longer helping him. I knew he had to be taking monthly blood tests ,so I said try this lemon juice and baking soda thing. He took the juice of one lemon and a half teaspoon of PURE baking soda each day. I completely forgot about it for a couple of months and he came up to me at work one day and said his blood tests are showing NO cancer cells and he had kept up the treatment since talking about it before. This went on for a couple years and his clinic was still trying to force him to take kemo but he refused. He was taking a gamble because he was on Obamacare and was afraid theyd cut him off.But he declined anyway. .After I retired I got a call from him a few years later. He was nervous and said his leukemia had returned. I asked him if he had kept up the lemon juice and baking soda and he said no. He quit some time previous. I havent heard from him since and wonder if he could have beat it if only he had kept it going.

I'm wondering if his compound X is on the market yet... did it do well in large scale testing in humans after it got funding? I do hope so.
