    ==========================
    RTU stands for Remote Terminal Unit, sometimes also called Remote Telemetry Unit or Remote Telecontrol Unit. An RTU is a microprocessor-based device that monitors and controls field devices, that then connects to plant control or SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems.
    If you do a search on the definition of an RTU, you may find many results that state an RTU is much more powerful than a PLC as the RTU can have several inputs and outputs.
    Well, as you know, so can the PLC. The RTU does have some potential benefits over the PLC, which we will discuss.
    On the price point, the winner right now is the PLC. PLCs have a lower price point but many consider the RTU to be a much more rugged system which would lead you to believe that spending more initially will equal out in the end.
    As far as process control, the RTU is probably on equal ground with the PLC. Both controllers can have multiple different types of I/O, different communications modules, and programming of processes that may require little to no operator intervention. Where the RTU is considered to have some advantages is in environment tolerances, backup power options, and autonomy.

    a so complicated topic, i worked with both of them, RTUs and PLCs, and it's really confusing.
    i think that there is some special functions dedicated to the RTU, it can record data by "archiving" and send them at a specific time using some specified protocol dedicated to Telemetry System, it's true that the RTU can lunch some programs like PLC but it's not really designed to be implemented in a manufacturing plant, usually it used for intersite communication ... and usually it does not contain any program ... sometimes we can fine both of them in an electric cabinet, the PLC for process controlling and the RTU to collect informations ...

    Need to add that RTUs have more diverse, fault-tolerant, & latency-ready communications capabilities compared to common PLCs. Most Modern RTUs can handle the same IEC 61131 programming as modern PLCs.

    Can one dcs unit controls in multiple rtu's ??? thanks for sharing

    • @realpars
      @realpars  Před 3 lety

      Theoretically, yes, but an RTU is not going to be directly compatible with a DCS system, and therefore, it will be seen as a "foreign" device on the DCS network. It can in many cases be able to communicate with the DCS via OPC or some other standard communication network. RTU's are typically connected to a server or PC that supervises the operation on the RTU's and collects data for a historian and displays data on HMI screens. Some DCS systems have virtual controllers that connect directly to the DCS and are able to be programmed to communicate with RTUs. Here is one common example: www.emerson.com/documents/automation/deltav-rtu-connect-for-oe-2-83-white-paper-en-132566.pdf

      SCADA is a general term for the software to supervise the control and data access from a variety of controller and I/O hardware. As such, SCADA systems can range in size from a few dozen I/O to thousands of I/O. Check out these videos: czcams.com/video/B3YVpgs9RY4/video.html; czcams.com/video/nlFM1q9QPJw/video.html

    • @realpars
      @realpars  Před 5 lety

      Hi Mark, thanks for the comment. You may be confusing hardware versus "software", for lack of a better word. For instance, there is a Modbus_RTU protocol to handle serial communications which is a protocol within a controller. This is on the software side while RTU, in the case of this video, is referring to hardware. Hope that helps!

    is an SEL relay an RTU?

    • @realpars
      @realpars  Před 2 lety +1

      An SEL Relay is similar to an RTU, but not exactly the same. Both can be used to remotely monitor a process, but the SEL is typically pre-defined in scope and I/O. But you are correct, they provide similar functions in may ways.

    @berkyldz5985 Před 3 lety

    Hi, can i connect IP cameras to RTU or PLC?

    • @realpars
      @realpars  Před 3 lety +1

      PLC's are very efficient and fast at solving boolean equations and logic equations. They do this very fast and reliably. Video, especially video streaming, requires a different type of computing power, including multi-threaded CPU channels, large amounts of memory, and pre-processing cache. These are not features afforded in PLC CPU architectures. Some PLC's do have function cards or co-processors that allow for video frame capture, but the "work" is not being done by the PLC, only the triggers to when the video is captured. Integration of video in modern control systems is normally handled at the HMI level.
      That said, camera systems can be interfaced to PLC's through Profinet that act as sensors and whose operation cn be controlled by a PLC. Even in this case, data exchange with the camera will be limited to the capabilities of Profinet (256 bytes in and 256 bytes out). An example can be found here: www.ad.siemens.com.cn/club/bbs/upload/file/20151204/6358481878313653695350436.pdf
