Thank you so much doctor! I have a volar plate avulsion fracture 2 months ago. i have a splint over the top and have hand physio however it can not strighten fully it is bent/ curved and bent fully is nto possible either. It is not stiff but just physchaclly will not move and then forced it is very painful It feels like it will snap or something. I think i need this proceedure you say but they are quite resistant to do much here in the netherlands. i see the surgon again in few weeks.

This is fantastic information but I have one question how do you splint this injury initially?

I have had, as early as I can remember (before the age of 5) a problem with a DIP hyperextension. I am now 48 years old and my PIP joint is now somewhat swollen and it looks like a boutonniere deformity. I have no problem straightening my PIP joint (although it looks swollen), but my DIP joint looks just like you describe for the PIP joint here. It appears I have a tight ORL. I hate that the fingertip points up at about 30 degrees unless I press on the bottom of my finger right below the DIP joint. My other fingers also have a hyperextension at the DIP, but the one finger looks horrific and affects my hand writing, my piano and violin playing, (and sometimes my typing).
I have worn Oval splints on the PIP joint, but that makes my DIP joint hyper extend even further. I can splint the DIP joint straight (and I can passively straighten it without a problem) but the splints have not really addressed the DIP. It looks like I am giving people the bird. I do also fails the Elson test but my PIP joint straightens easily and actively.
Additionally, in the last 10 years or so I have noticed that my distal phalanx is veering towards the 5th finger.
Is surgery the only solution and is it even a solution? Is it worth trying to splint the DIP joint into a closed fist position for a long period of time? Does the PIP need to be splinted into extension if that joint isn't having issues other than edema?
I can't find much information about a mostly DIP hyperextension deformity.

As the result of an accident on May 5, 2014, I have a volar plate avulsion on left ring finger. Two fingers were dislocated. The emergency room placed a buddy splint on it and I saw a hand specialist on May 8. It was in a splint until I started OT June 18 and have had 7 OT sessions to date. There remains a large bump at the base of my finger which she said is scar tissue. The attempts to flex this joint are extremely painful and no matter how often and how hard I try to flex, It won't bend past 15 degrees. Am I inflicting unnecessary pain on this joint? Is it possible that in 6 months I may be able to flex this joint? When I do follow-up visits with the doctor every two weeks, he reminds me that I am 69 years old.

Had this exact injury from BJJ. The bone fragment broke off with the ligament. I wore a buddy splint for 8 weeks. Tons of pain, couldn't bend past about 15 degrees. I didn't have health insurance at the time so I just had to let it heal and forgo the surgery. Finger ended up healing fully after nearly 8 months. It was a nightmare. One of the most painful injuries I've ever had. And I've had a ton. I now have a big bump on the inside of the middle knuckle and can't wear my wedding band. Other than that It's perfectly normal.

I had my left thumb injured while playing cricket (stopped the ball when it comes in 150 MpH). I initially thought it just a muscular problem and did not go to doctor...but later after 4 months i realized my finger was not as mobile as my right thumb. It was clearly unnoticed since it was not very much pain.....
My MRI shows finger was injured and healed with "minimal volar subluxation of thumb mcp joint". Can this be come to normal without any surgery ? how long more it will take to heal ?

@@lukefarrugia5565 I got my splint removed around a week ago, it feels okay. It just hurts a bit when I put it in a fist. But it's not swelling so much, and it doesn't really hurt. The doctors said i'll get used to it.
