- 2014 bmw f30/31 steering rack rattle from steering going over rough ground. repair kit available from bmw don't get told you need a rack as this repair could save you hundreds of pounds....
don't forget to like and subscribe!!!!!!!!
Sorted this on my car, quite an easy job. If you take the airbox out you actually have plenty of access from the top to do it, no need to lift the car up and remove under trays. At least on. 320D
Nice top thanks 👍🏼
Have had this issue for a couple of years now, I use an independent garage to do all the work on my car and they didn't know about the fix until I showed them your video. They had previously contacted the local BMW dealer (Sytners) who recommended a reconditioned rack at £1600, even though they had the repair kit on the shelf. Just got the car back this afternoon, job done, no more play in the rack, drives much better now as well. Thank you for posting.
How much did they charge you to replace it?
@@armedessential I think it was £98 inc vat including parts.
The torque limit to tighten these too is 70NM ;), If steering doesnt return when you let go then back it off a quarter of a turn until it does !
You legend finally the answer to my question, mines been rattling like crazy over rough ground gonna say this is definitely the problem, i asked in the bm forums and thats was useless lol cheers man!
No problems and you'll save yourself some money 👌
Same here, after numerous attempts finally figured it out. Told my garage what needs doing and they started quoting me for a new steering rack. 🤦🏻♂️ so I’ll be taking it somewhere where they actually listen to me.
Any help with a 420d 2017 lci grand coupe?? Clicking and clunking when steering is turned??
There is a torque sequence to respect. Very important. Check BMW bulletin of service
You forgot to grease the spring and lube the o-rings on the yoke.
that sound is also heard by me while driving slowly and on bumps, and I think I have the same problem, was it also heard with you while driving?
What tools is needed please? I’ll do it myself
My 2014 420d doesn't have this 3 holed told but has a hex bolt instead?? Is it the same repair kit fitment underneath? Also my knocking noise seems to be coming from the passenger side and all suspension components seem tight although I've changed the droplink but knocking still there over rough roads and when car is stationary and engine off moving steering wheel
Cheers, fixed my F32 clunking noise going over bumps
did you get the kit from a bmw dealer, as i have just posted that a aftermarket bush wont fit
@philipchisholm6705 I got a genuine kit, but it doesn't come with grease or the removal tool. My friend got an ebay special kit and although it was harder to fit, it did eventually go in. Same improvement to both of our steering.
I guess there's variations in the ebay kits?
Thanks for the video!! My car has that atm, my mechanic said it is part of the recall process, is that correct? And what is the damage money wise if it needs to be pay for?
i tried to fix with an aftermarket bush ,, guess what it will fit in the steering rack hole but will not fit over the steering arm inside the rack
GREAT VIDEO THANKS, THERE IS A AFTERMARKET REPAIR KIT AVAILABLE ON AMAZON FOR 35 QUID INSTEAD OF 102 POUNDS FROM BMW , ANYBODY OUT THERE THATS FITTED AFTERMARKET INSTEAD OF THE OEM, AND DOES IT DO THE JOB
Thanks bro😊
Nice video. I have a f21, presume it would be the same process? Looking at fitting it myself
Did you replace it the f21?
If so, any tips?
@@sammybaker4767 haven’t got round to it yet sorry
I was wondering if I could bring mine to yours
My garage just did this fix, no more knocking although the steering is very heavy right now, steering wheel is staying where it's at in long bends, not centering itself back. Any idea how that's possible and how to fix that?
Loosen the cap about a quarter turn
top man thanks for this video
Hi mate, I am about to do this exact job myself to my car this week. The only thing is i dont have a torque wrench. I have read about leaving about 1mm of thread showing, so slight lip is about right. As when flush /70nm of torque it can be too tight on steering? My plan is to once get near to 1mm of thread, showing a slight lip. Is it to check steering to see if the knocking has gone and then maybe just leave it where it is? Do you think that would be okay?
Where do the one time use clamps come into play?
This kit is avaibile for Bmw X5 F15? Year 2015
Would you know what could cause a power steering leak on a BMW 118
Funciona para modelos da zf lenksysteme (LK) ?
Sorry what s the name of that part I cannot find it on line I have the same issue on my 2012 318d
Call bmw parts they will have them in stock or search bmw steering rack repair kit
Hi there, would this worn out part cause your steering to feel like it’s notchy when doing minor adjustments in your steering? My steering wheel falls a tiny bit to either the left or right when I try to keep it straight on the motor way or long straight stretches of road
Possibly yes it could be, but without looking myself I wouldn't like to guarantee it
Hi, did you find the fix?I have the same issue
Hi, i have the same problem. Did you fixed it?
The knocking can be heard only when the motor is off or even when the motor is running? I have the knocking only with the car motor off.
With the engine noise and the eps working, the noise is almost unnoticeable so you can only hear it engine off :-)
what torque setting do you tighten up to
Did you find out
@@adamhargreaves786870nm
@@adamhargreaves7868I don't think it is torqued, as there's a spring, I think you just need to put the threads to the same depth as it was when you removed the pervious cap. Then small adjustments can be made by moving the steering wheel to feel when it is no longer sloppy, and not tight enough that it is heavy and doesn't return easily to centre.
hello, the steering wheel is hard in my car, I have another question, it does not blow hot or cold air from the heater, what is the problem?
I'd get it booked into a garage and get some advise or get it diagnosed as doing it over the internet without seeing the car is impossible
You didn’t mention torque….too tight and your steering wheel will not self centre, too slack and the knock returns.
Were you able to fix it because i have the same issue its not centering back where its supposed to be
@@shafenasir4910 you have over tightened it, loosen the bolt a quarter turn at a time then test drive with each turn to find a sweet spot your happy with 👍
Hi I have just had mine fixed on my f20. But I have now noticed the steering is a lot heavier and feels really weird. Any ideas why it's like this ?
E
Not been adjusted correctly possible
Sounds like it was tightened too much when putting back together
I did it on mine and im also expiriancing issues. Steering is heavier thats ok but car pulls to the left now and wheel wants to stop on 11:55 opposed to center not always but often. Did multiple adjustments still not resolved
@@Armada8589isnt that a wheel alignment issue?
Hi i need my car this done please where about are you?
You can do that only removing the airbox
A steering rack from BMW for a 2016 430d cost is £2500
Hi. Is the clunky sound coming when you driving as well or just when you turn steering wheel
It will sound like a knocking noise over rough ground
@@bazmeredith Thanks for reply. I just find out there is no part like this in my bmw f10 steering rack
This actually might be the problem on my car

Hi I am not sure if this is the same problem however this is the issue I am having.
czcams.com/video/hYCrPhBWS0A/video.html
It rattles when coming to a stop and when turning the steering wheel?
I'd be checking alternator pully or crank pully. You'll see by the aux belt flapping
I tried to fit the new one but it wont slide in so easily why s that?
I had trouble getting the new one in. Had to wedge a breaker between it and the sub frame then push quite hard against it
