If you don’t know the history of B&W as a brand, just know they are the speaker of choice for hundreds of studios around the world, including LucasFilms and many of the top albums have been mastered with B&W--most famously at Abbey Road studio. Since their humble beginnings in 1966, they have grown to become one of the largest speaker companies in the world and unquestionably the largest high-performance speaker brand in the world.
The development of the main Continuum™ driver took B&W engineers over 8 years and 70 different versions of materials until they came up with something that would surpass the low distortion and break up levels of Kevlar which they previously used. The color of the Continuum™ driver is a rich silver, but the important part is how this new material behaves with audio signals. Most drivers add some flavor of their own to the signal in how they react to the sound being fed to them. Continuum™ holds it's shape better than anything the B&W team has ever produced.
One of the most striking things about the Signature 700 Series is its beautiful finish. They sourced the wood veneers from Alpi--a company in Italy that specializes in sustainable wood harvesting. The veneers then get nine coats of finish and I have to say the look is just spectacular! To highlight the luster of the finish, the Continuum™ driver gets a highly polished metal trim ring and the protective grill over the Carbon Double Dome tweeter also has the same bright silver finish. On the rear of the speaker is a special signature nameplate that completes their unique identity. You’ll also notice on the back that these speakers have dual high-quality binding posts so you can bi-wire or bi-amp amp them as you see in our setup.
We think the 705 Signature will be one of the best possible choices you could make for a bookshelf speaker in a small to medium-sized room. Their bass performance reaches down to 50 Hz which is pretty low for a bookshelf. And you could always augment their bass response with a fast subwoofer like the B&W DB4. If your room is larger than around 13 by 18, you’ll probably want to consider adding a sub or stepping it up to the 702 Signature!
In the 702 Signature, the Continuum™ is used exclusively for the critical midrange frequencies. Everything about the tech used here came from the top of the line 800 series. First, the driver has virtually no surround, the material goes all the way to the edge. This reduces midrange coloration as there is no surround to add distortion. The driver itself is placed in a cast aluminum basket that was specifically designed to reduce resonances. Then, the whole assembly is totally isolated from the cabinet with a pretty unique approach. To augment the midrange driver, the 702 Signature has 3 6 ½” Aerofoil™ cone woofers. Yes, this is yet another special material developed by the engineers at Stening that has less distortion than their previous woofer materials due to the way they tapered the cone and the material used. The combination of three small drivers gives you the surface area of a huge woofer, but the speed advantage of smaller drivers. The bass impact you hear from the 702 Signatures is just super fast and tight!

This is Bowers and Wilkins deep in their element. That wood finish is flat out gorgeous. Certainly a speaker that I'd be proud to display in my family room.
Great review, with some good practical tips. Awesome match of aesthetics and performance. Can't wait to hear them!
Thank's for this introduction! Good job! Really considering the 705 now....
great detailed review, thanks
These speakers are some serious eye candy!
Dream speaker 🔊
This was excellent. I have a question. I have 4 CCM663s and looking at add two more to get 7.2.6. My room (2300 cubic feet and 295 sq feet (17.15X17) will have challenges (distance between) with two more Atmos configurations so I am thinking of 2 more in an Aural 3D format or DTX Pro type set up. Are there any rules of thumb on distance between height channel configurations that would allow me to just add two more CCM663s in Atmos or do I need to get two more B&W speakers which allow directional effects and if so which do you recommend. Sorry for the long rambling question.
These speakers sound great
Love my 705 s2
I was not familiar with these speakers and saw them on Best Buy website. I goggle them and found your website. Excellent, video. Now I'm more inclined to purchase them but still doing some research. Are definitive technology speakers in the same class? I need speakers for my family room. These are really good looking. Beautiful wood!
I have these my mind is blown every time like how
Yes, they are very good!
Thank you for this review. I listened the 705 siganture speakers last week and they sounded very fabulous in the treble and medium. but I wonder if it wouldn't be better to take the 702s for better bass. Would they sound better at low volume ? The problem is the size of my listening room : 20 square meters... and in a flat so I have to be careful with the bass for the neighorhood. Could you help me to decide ? Thanks a lot.
The 702 will sound better at lower levels and have far more bass. Thanks for watching
Greetings. One question, which speaker do you recommend more, the B&W 603 or the 705? Both S2. The provider tells me that the bass are similar, but that the 705 are clearer. First of all, Thanks. (The room is 20 mt2, the amplifier is a Roksan K3)
The 705 will be much clearer and image better, but you will get far more bass impact from the dual woofers in the 603 and its larger cabinet. Thanks for watching
GREAT
Glad you enjoyed it.
Do they make a center channel for them????
If they sound as gorgeous as they look then I'll need this. Are they available to demo at your store?
They are in Raleigh and will be there through this Saturday and then they go off to reviewers. So if you are near Raleigh its a perfect time to come here them.
Hi Audio Advice,
i am in need of help on deciding to choose between two amplifiers for my HIFI audio progressing setup.
Currently i have B&W 603 s2 anniversary edition floorstanding speakers and a pairing subwoofer (Rel T7x)
Options i have for the amplifiers as part of purchase from a friend are
1. Arcam SA20
2. Rotel A14 MII
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I will be using this setup in my living room for both HIRes audio and also as Home Theater.
Anything that can be a great pick for the above use will be awesome.
Thank you in Advance.
Both of those are very good integrated amps. Maybe your friend will let you try both to see which you like. Thanks for watching
You cannot even get the title correct. The 702 is the floorstander. The 705 is the bookshelf.
No Center Channel?
Which are good powered speakers?
B&W Formation Duo
Replace your caps specially tweeter one for Mundorf Supreme Oil Silver and your 685s2 or newer 607 series will sound surprisingly close for fraction of the cost....
The cabinet is also different, less resonaces in the sound, in 700 series, bass is much more controlled and defined, its very noticeable if you choise one of the floorstanding models you get more clarity becouse of the carbon dome tweeter
@@andreasmoller9798 Once you use a sub and cut off lows at say 80hz resonance is much less of a factor.
@@kdomster9141 there will still be big advantages with 700 series over 600 series, with or without a sub, and there is less resonaces in the midrange drivers as well on the 700 series, bass drivers is also different they play much more correctly than 600 series, i upgraded from 600 series so i know thats true, i have even Done a side by side camparsion between my old 683 s2 and my new 702 s2, and difference is huge, but i do agree you proably get more value with 600 series, but even with the better perfomence on 700 series, they look much better than 600 series, the build quality is much better, so you get what you pay for
@@andreasmoller9798 i use much better caps on tweeter than you have in your 700 series, and I do not use pc board for crossover but direct connection .... Remember that most of resolution comes from the tweeters ...
Do some mods like this to your 700s and you will be amazed.
Check your title. It says 705 towers and 702 bookshelf
The price is now in the range of Dynaudio Special 40. How does it compare to the Dynaudio Special 40 ?
I have not heard the dynaudios, but i imagine they a quite different sound signature, and its a bookshelf versus floorstanders so its going to be about preference,
@@andreasmoller9798 The Dynaudio Special 40 is not a floor-stander and it is bookshelf vs bookshelf.
@@martinmbokazi8372 my bad did you mean the 705 s2 signature my mistake
@@andreasmoller9798 No worries, yes it is 705S2 vs Special 40. Thank you
The Dynaudios are a very laid back and detailed speaker while the B&W are far more aggressive. The woofer on the Dynaudio does a better job at handling the mid bass and mid range frequencies, but the soft dome tweeter is very soft and has to be cranked up more than the B&W. Both are excellent and like power, but they are polar opposites on how they reach the same destination.
The 702 s2 would be a nice upgrade from my 683 s2. But my 600 series still going on strong
I have 684 s1 and purchased 702 s2. The difference is huge with same amp!
@@7AccordHomeStudio nice 👍 i got 702 s2 as a month ago, huge upgrade over 683 s2, and i run the same amp as well as did for 683 s2, Hegel h190, 702 is easier to drive to my surprice
If the sound quality is that great, why limit the sales?
Classic limited edition play where they can make one production run and create scarcity in a premium product.
Price ?
The 705 are $4000 a pair. 702 is $3250 each.
Why I bought the 706's, the regular 705 I wanted went up to three grand, versus the 2500 previously, trariffs probably.
Thanks mates 🙆🏿♂️
B&W my first career design used Zeus for inspiration icon 🤔
Ya I'm Germans Germany 🇩🇪 but used Katyusha 🇩🇪 & Saxons 🇬🇧 for trying my products before apply to all Germans products 🤔
Used Zeus success and next I used my father for inspiration design for Katyusha 🇩🇪 🤔
So enough Zeus & my father for all Germans family products 🤔
Great selections and taste! Thanks for watching.
It's a shame that these are made in China
It's a shame you care. They are made to spec and if made in other places would likely even cost more.
