    Steve, I really appreciate your video, although you made it look WAY easier than it turned out to be for me. Getting the two electrical connections off of the alternator was incredibly difficult for me. I have short, thick arms and short, thick fingers that just can't reach through the tight spaces - I think I spent about 3 hours on just those two connectors. Several times I was ready to give up and have my car towed to a repair shop to complete the job, but somehow I got it done. Removing the radiator hose was a must for me, and I even had to remove the belt tensioner to be able to reach the electrical connectors. I even started to remove the power steering pump but gave up quickly on that idea. There's also no way I could reach the two screws that held the bracket on the back of the alternator, and those two clips that held the cable to the bracket were a PIA to remove! Fortunately, putting things back together was a lot easier, but it still took me 7-8 hours total and a ton of stress. There won't be a next time for me - I can easily afford to have a repair shop do all my work, so it's time to quit being so cheap and help out the local economy!

      Hey man ! Yep, it was a bit frustrating for sure on the bracket and clips...mine was all oily as well from some little oil leak so that didn’t help either. I hear ya on some of these DIYs ending up more frustrating than they were worth, but at least if it ever goes out again or the next car owned is built similarly and has the same problem, it will be a much easier decision to just send it to the shop. Kinda like laying carpet in my house or digging out for a swimming pool...did each of those once...I just pay the installers and sit in a chair and watch now 🤣🤣🤣. All the best ! Steve

    thanks this really helped me out!also taking the bracket off was more easier, also taking the sway bars off and just letting it hang made more space to take out alternator.also I did not have to take off the coolant line to the radiator I just took off the plastic on the bottom of the car and took off the fans through the bottom of the car . also a tip to take off the clip from the alternator while it's still bolted is to use a flat head screw driver to push it out the clip where you can grab it with the flat head while you press the lever to the clip with your finger .THANKS FOR THE VIDEO

    Just did this for the second time today. Be warned, this one isn’t easy for the casual wrench. I could swap the alternator on my Camaro 3 times with the same amount of time and effort. The first time I actually pulled it without removing the fan. Don’t recommend that route. It was a struggle even with help. Thanks for the video. Great outline of the process.

      Thanks 👍. Yep, all it takes is one long bolt to add a ton of complication to a repair lol ! Getting the wires loose wasn’t much fun either since they didn’t leave much room behind the alternator either. It is definitely not a quick swap out like the old days for things anymore for sure. Just did this job and need to iterate do NOT try to pull it out from the top(the video didn't, I just wanted to see if I could), it doesn't fit. It ended up slipping and smashing my radiator (rooky mistake I know). Watch out for the rad while removing and be careful around it.
    Now for tips:
    1) dropping the sway bar makes it much easier to pull out, for some reason I couldn't squeeze mine around
    2) removing the oil filter makes it a bit easier to mount up
    3) the bracket holding the wires can stay up there, it's two 8mm bolts on the back of the alternator. Unclipping those wires is alot harder than just removing the screws
    4) rad fans are wayyy easier to pull out of the bottom, they're held in at the bottom with just plastic, no bolts, so lift up and push towards the motor and they should just fall right on out
    5) replace your belt! It's cheap insurance while it's already loose
    Great video! Some of these points might be repeated but they were things I thought about while doing the job

      xavier wells , thanks for the comments 👍...they will for sure help others that watch the video for additional tips on making it easier. Yep, getting the wire connectors loose was a real pain so I’m glad to know it’s easier to just take the little bolts loose on the bracket (mine was so nasty from an oil leak that I couldn’t tell for sure what was holding the bracket on, lol). Also, good info on dropping the fans out of the bottom...they were much easier to put back in from the bottom so that makes sense for sure. Thanks again for the tips and the comments 👍. All the best, Steve

      jack morgan , if I remember right you gotta wiggle it quite a bit to get the holes to line up to get the bolt in...maybe if it’s close a philips head screwdriver stuck in the hole might help to do the final lining up to the bolt hole...just a thought

      @@amaterasu8829 it's in the same position on the motor but your body panels are different and I think your radiator may be closer. It might be tighter between the rad and alternator. It might be harder to take out the bottom. The basics should be the same tho.

Based on some of the comments folks made after watching the video and doing theirs, for the second removal and install, I found it a lot easier to drop the fan out of the bottom and unbolt the the mounts that hold the stabilizer bar to the frame and let it swing down out of the way 👍. Hey steve. Nice video. Question. On the back of the alternator were the black power cable hooks up to is it one nut or two nuts to put it back on correctly? I have an extra nut after everything i did but i dont have a clue where it goes. Maybe its just some random i found while working. Thanks man.

    • @StevesDIYs
      @StevesDIYs  Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks 👍. It’s been a while since I had the alternator off, but seems like it was like most of them and had one nut that is on the alternator, then the power wire end eyelet goes on, then the nut to tighten down on the eyelet…basically the wire’s end eyelet is sandwiched between two nuts. If the inside nut was taken off and the wire put below it, there’s a chance it might contact the alternator body and be grounded. If both of those are there, then it may be just a random nut from somewhere else like you said. Hope this helps and all the best ! Steve.

Thanks for pointing the mistake out…I wish I could edit the video to correct it, but once it’s posted on CZcams the video cannot be edited unless it’s totally replaced. Hopefully other folks that do not already have ratchets of the different sizes will see the comment and can get the correct one.

    hey steve! question. so i got all the bolts off. the 12mm bolt in back (what a bitch and a half), the two 8mm for the back bracket, the long 14 mm bolt in the front, and the two bracket bolts in the front and the alternator isn’t dropping. it’s just swiveling at the point where the big bolt connected. do i force it out?
    all the electrical connectors are off as well

    • @StevesDIYs
      @StevesDIYs  Před rokem +1

      Hey man ! Yes, if all of the bolts are out, but it just pivots back and forth where the long bolt was, it just needs to be wiggled while pulling down and it should come on out 👍. There’s a sleeve where the big bolt goes through that takes the play out of the bolt bracket that tightens up when the alternator is installed that makes it tight to get off. The new alternator has this as well but is pushed back to give room to install…once the bolt is tightened, it moves and once again takes the play out. Hope this helps and all the best ! Steve

    • @StevesDIYs
      @StevesDIYs  Před rokem +1

      Hello, from what folks have commented, it believe it will be the same for the long bolt hitting the fans if they are not removed (or at a minimum at least dropped down some). You will be able to tell pretty quick by just removing the tension on the belt from the tensioner like in the video and then trying to remove the bolt to see if it will clear the fans on yours. This is actually what my son did as he was going to just do it himself, but when he realized that the bolt would not come out, he put it back and then asked if I would help him. If you do end up doing the job, please comment back on if the fans needed to be removed for the 370z as it can help other folks with that car specifically. Thanks and all the best ! Steve

I wasn’t sure if there was going to be bolts securing the fan or something so I pulled it while I was up top. If you find you didn’t need to, you can reply back in the comments so others will know 👍.
