The Best Survival Shovel I Have Used So Far: iunio Survival Folding Shovel with Handle Lock Design

  • So far, this is the best "survival" shovel I have ever used. The reason? This one has a long handle AND the handle locks into place. As you will see in the video, I did have to do a little 'work' on it to adjust one of the locks, but since that - no problems. I like having the longer handle for more leverage and this one is definitely going in to one of my cars. Check it out and let me know what you think.

    This shovel has been around for awhile. The other versions seem to have more tools in it. The locks seam prone to failure. I carry a Council Tools Combination shovel/pick in my truck it uses the old military twist lock collar to secure the shovelhead and pick. Looks like a great starter tool for somebody getting into preparedness if you have limited space to carry stuff.

    What is the leverage force limit? I mean, if you locked the spade under a root, how much force can you pull on the end of the handle before it breaks? And which section breaks first? (I realize destroying a perfectly good tool is foolish, but failure limit is a good test).

    3 things: This thing already had issues on the first day. I would like to see an actual long term test. How would this thing last if you had to depend on it for real use? Second, I would like to see it used as an axe, something the ColdSteel does very well and will take a beating. And finally, what does this thing weigh? It looks heavy, is it something packable or is it just good to put in the trunk of your car? With all the joint and pieces of this Chinese made product I question if it's more novelty than a tool you can depend on.

    A better way to use a ferro rod is stick the blade of your knife down onto the tinder, then drag the ferro rod across the spine of your blade. That way you're not knocking your tinder all the place with your striking hand, and the sparks from the rod fall directly onto the tinder.

    i got an old wood handle version of these.. i see often the kits generaly have an ax but thats how i generaly use the shuvel.... thinkin they could top the standard by filling out the shape of the ax into the shuvel blade just a little heaver or thicker make the right courner for the hammer side block addin to shape... make the saw below the hammer head and keep sharp shuvel blade shape add a file texture to the handle, sand paper surface on the other side out of the metal like file surface then fill one tube with mini drill put the bit lock as a hole on the edge for more tork lever action make a pin hole for two sections to be used as snips with pin and plyers tip add a right side foot brace and the last addition is how to make the tip act like an oscilater and run on corless battery with a tiny strip of trickle solor panel dont need to be super large panel as long as its a charge producen,,, too add a mini light that can be used as a lighter because of the charge and it might top all other survival shuvel combos would love to see one like this dont know who to contact to have it made like that but good idea is open

My humble opinion would be to contact the owner and advise to maintain it with a bit CLS, wd40, or better yet a drop of 30 wait oil. The spring locks are the best I have seen yet. It’s to cheep and easy to cover them with a smaller version of ranger bands. Also in that kit offer a way to sharpen the blades. Jus my two cents. Christopher US Army ret. Laconia NH

    I have to admit the practicality of tools like these always get the best of me but then I remember is it made of all steel or is it aluminum handles and steel shovel and more often than not it's aluminum and bound to fail if you want something nice that will last the test of time you have 2 options... One you make it yourself so that you know what you'll need or 2 buy a military shovel with the pick spine not the best but for very basic needs it's a start as to figure out for your own needs and build from there( word of warning if it gets below 40 degrees Fahrenheit look into getting rubberized handles otherwise you will lose skin due to major frostbite).

    This has the same fundamental WEAKNESS as all break-down tools which have segments which screw together. I.e,
    the threaded sections cannot equal a solid piece. Unless, perhaps, the threads are MUCH longer and stronger.
    The multiple impacts on those "joints" could stress them to the point of failure. This might be a useful tool for occasional use for a while.
    But if you want tools for an extended time in the wild, it would be better to carry small dedicated tools which would last.
    A small axe, field knife, simple small shovel, and folding saw. And a ferrocerium rod, compass, para-cord, backup folding knife, whistle, would not add much weight or consume much space.
    Broken tools don't serve our needs well. Especially if our lives might depend upon them.

      you are right, but those mechanics are made to be portable and fit in a backpack. Define a simple small shovel. 80cm shovel in 1 piece will get in a backpack?! I dont think so. If you just leave it in the trunk of your car, its ok, but not for a bug out bag for example...

The titanium one chops ok after sharpening but because of the reduction in weight no were near the AXE power of the CS shovel.

    I'm considering this... The shovel for Dakota holes.. but seriously... Are u chopping more or hole digging more? One little Dakota hole can be chopped out with axe... Then chop wood with delight... The shovel will do the hole with ease... Then a whole day of struggle..
    That spring goes bad.. for sure.. all that to dig one little hole.. lol.. it's not like your going to dig a fence line.. build a pig pen? Raise a family with that shovel? Lol... I'm going with an axe. Although an outhouse would make it worth it. Hmmm.. but once you have the topsoil away with the axe . You should be able to make a wooden scoop shovel and bucket. Soon axes should have Magnacut steel. Very durable.. I could chop rocks and dirt all day and night. That shovel can't wack roots decently.. it's too light and bounces back on springy roots.. the axe head has the weight and power.

    Shovel blades are ... shovel blades. Trying to make them "multi function" seriously reduces their effectiveness as shovels -- and the "extra functions" don't work well either.
    As for blade design, some observations:
    -- Blades simply mush have a slight curve;
    -- Blades must have a spring temper with edges hardened to at least Rc 40;
    -- I do agree with serrations / teeth on the edges for cutting roots;
    -- Three different heads are needed. A 'standard" (shown), one with a flat scoop nose for snow / digging out your car, and a perforated point for use in swampy ground.
    I as: Why carry a shovel at all? Long acquaintance with digging has taught me the utility of a small, rigid pick as there always seem to be rocks, etc. in the way. Give me a pick and a trowel for scooping out loosed earth.

    Not a fan of the glass breaker point. I could see myself hurting myself with it. Wish that could be removed. The chopping edge could be helpful for roots, but I'd rather it was smooth. That said, I love the length, sturdiness, and compactness of it.

    Wooo...the axe edge will cut twigs! Or, you could break them with your hands. Get an Army surplus folding shovel and a hand ax and leave the expensive trick shovels at home.

    The glass breaker I would prefer not to have that cause if you need to push down on it and you said it might fk up your hand. I rather not be there. If I have to break a window I’ll use the shovel

    • @rathernot6509
      @rathernot6509 Před 2 lety

      You can easily curl a fist around the glass breaker part and push down that way, plus it's less strenuous on your wrist than pushing down with the flat of your hand, also not as much as an issue with the right kind of gloves

    You can not find a stronger shovel than a solid handles shovel. These “survival” shovels are useful for a couple outing but always loosen up and weaken with a couple uses.

    I purchased that exact shovel through an Ad that I kept getting while on CZcams. BUT....I never got it!! I became concerned when I never received an email with a Purchase Confirmation. The strange thing is, I never got that Ad again after I "purchased' the shovel. A few days later, I tried to locate an official website for the company and had no luck. So I searched online to see if anyone else had the same issue, and yes there were others that purchased the shovel and never received it. My advice, DO NOT purchase the shovel through an Ad you see get on CZcams!! There's certainly a scam going around.

      I had the same question. Im currently looking at this not for hard digging work, like while wheeling in my wrangler, but rather as a lightweight compact shovel in my RV to keep the load in van down. Mostly used to chop kindling, dig a pit, and arrange coals when cooking. Thanx Tim :-) Good value input!
