I wish someday I will be able to visit
great video! I would have included the temple walks behind the old town (Higashiyama). Seeing you mentioned Shirakawago and some onsen towns, I think Hida Furakawa would rate a mention, as would Kamikochi! :)
When making a Top 5 it's always tough to pick which things don't make the cut. These are all great recommendations that hopefully others take note of. Thanks!
Would love to visit
Yes we've been there 2 weeks ago.. Very beautiful place
I'm a Japanese living in Tokyo.
I really like the old town of Takayama and I go there from Tokyo every summer.
In the old town, you can compare sake and drink delicious coffee and eat Hida beef (飛騨牛), one of the most delicious meats in Japan.
If you like the old culture of Japan, delicious foods or beautiful nature, I recommend visiting Takayama!
I visited Takayama old town and Shirakawago in March. Drove from Kansai airport to Takayama where I stayed at a ryokan on the first night. Went to old town the next morning and proceeded to Shirakawago after a delicious hida beef lunch. So beautiful. Greetings from Malaysia.
Thank you very much for sharing your experience! And greetings from Japan!
It’s my hometown. We’re very happy you guys made this video :)
Wish many tourists come and visit Takayama through this video. Thanks again and plz keep making such a wonderful video like this :)

This was a great video. Very informative. Thank you
Stunning Takayama wood craft. A true blend of precision and artistry. The intricate details are simply mesmerizing!
wow looks awesome! Definitely have to go there, thanks for the video!
I like this video; great information! Please consider posting longer ones where the narration isn’t as rushed so that we can savour both the scenery and the explanation 💖 Thank you! 💖
Takayama is my favorite city in Japan.
We can see vestiges of small Kyoto and it makes me excited.
You can enjoy walking Shirakwago in summer and winter. The air of mystery about Oku-Hida-Onsen calm me down.
Thank you for your detailed video!!
Love this one J-G! When people think of visiting Japan, it’s easy to only visit the ‘big’ cities, but hopefully videos like this will make people think outside the square. We are avid Japan travellers and must say that Takayama holds a special place in our memories. My highlights of Takayama? Sitting at the park below Daioji Temple with a Takayama beer and watching the world pass by; driving to Shirakawago and returning via Route 360 to visit the small villages ; sukiyaki and Hida beef at nearby Hida and umeshu from one of many local breweries. You won’t regret it 👊🏻
Thank you very much for your nice comment and sharing your highlights!
Highly recommended.. Would go again in winter... Just came back last month June... Shirakawago, alpine route, little Kyoto.. Beautiful
It seems beautiful♡ thank you!
Thank you so much! I'm heading there this trip and was lucky enough to get accommodation at an inn in Takayama smack bang during the festival week.
Super excited!!
Judith Chen how was your trip?

Nice information!
Thanks!!
Estuve en abril y me encantó!! Me quedé enamorada de el país.
Me encantaría volver a ir
Thank you for this. it's very informative. Will definitely go back there to visit the onsen and Shirakawa go.

Super helpful thanks so much!
Awesome video! Good work!
Good video. I can tell, since our family was in Takayama just last month (July, too hot though), and visited all those places (except the festival, obviously). What did we enjoy most? Hard to tell, to us they were all equally great places! We spent 5 days in Takayama and its surroundings, and that seemed an appropriate amount of time.
I could also recommend the temples and shrines east of, and above the old town. They are jammed next to each other, therefore long walks are NOT required between them like in Kyoto. Also of note are local restaurants, which are plentiful. Unfortunately many close early, like at 7 pm.
To get relieved and refreshed from Tokyo and Kyoto, stick Takayama between them!
Thank you, what a great summary 🥰 now I want to stay much longer
I've been to Takayama and Shirakawa-go while doing a round-trip around Japan. It's absolutely beautiful.
Me too. I've been to Takayama and I had Hidagyu a wagyu from Hida village. czcams.com/video/bNXxkC5GB84/video.html
I've made a video about Japan that includes Takayama, Koya-San, Tokyo, Osaka, Kanazawa and Kyoto
I wish I’d spent more days here than I did in Tokyo, Takayama was my favorite city in Japan ❤️ I wanna go back in winter one day :)
Ayy i went to all of these places. Great vid bro.
Visited Takayama back in 1982 and fortunate to see it much quieter back then compared to today
Thank You!!
Brilliant vid, thank you sooo much! 🤗
Thank you so much for the nice comment!!
Gujo Hachiman is also a great day trip. Across from Hida no Sato we visited the craft place where we made a Sarubobo. The people were so friendly. The Ashiyu in Winter were also a hit! Love Takayama.
These Sarubobo activities are really fun, right? Thank you for your nice comment!
Great video!
Ive been to the rope way a few years ago, it brought back quite a few memories, especially the Onsen and hotel I stayed in, ( all featured on the video clip) its a pretty, old unspoilt town, its well worth the visit.
Takayama is gorgeous the photos I got there are unreal.
It's like every part of Japan there's loads to do!
I been there & will visit the place again~
very useful information.
Thank you very much!
TAKAYAMA IS SO BEAUTIFUL OMG
Awesome video guys. I’m curious what places we’ve missed when visiting Japan. So far we’ve been to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima and Kamakura. What should we fill trip number 3 with? We’re thinking maybe Takayama, Fukuoka, and Okinawa. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Looks i very beautiful place i would like to live there someday
I went there from Italy, incredible place!
Glad to hear you had a nice time there!
I did two of thiese five things and was worth it. Maybe next year I can enjoy the festival.
I'm still learning Japanese so that I can comfortably visit this place and witness the real life locations of the anime 'Kimi no Nawa' , after watching this video I'm even more excited, I hope I get done learning basic Japanese as soon as possible....Hida aka Itomori, Shane is cominggggggg🙂
Takayama is beautiful and welcoming!
Thank you! I'm planning to go to Shirakawago next week! :)
Hope you will have a great time there!
Soon I'll be in Takayama... thanks for the tip
Kyoto's close relative. Been on the farm in winter, was overnight in old town. I loved the atmosphere, hospitality, and of course the wonderful women there. I didnt want to leave :)
Make sure you try their Hida Beef in Takayama. Delicious
Been planning to do this in 2020 but Covid happened. Now back to doing my itinerary and still using your videos as reference. Thank you for such useful vidoes Japan-Guide!
Also got to say the narrator's accent is so lovely! :)
Have a wonderful trip!
I consider the hida beef a must!! When we went to Takayama we had no idea Hida beef was a thing and tried some skewers from a small establishment...OMFG, they were DELICIOUS, top beef I had even eaten. Later we found out these were A5 grade beef, just like Kobe beef. And proceeded to eat more and more meat in town 🤤🤤 We also had medium raw sirloin sushi and it was amazing 👌
That's a great recommendation, Hida beef is really delicious!
I wish I could put not only like, but heart instead. Amazing town and area❤
Nice infographic
The Showa Museum in Takayama is one of the coolest museums I’ve been to. The downstairs is set up like a street full of shops from various parts of the Showa era with all kinds of period stuff around. Upstairs has a neat setup of a school room and a bunch of posters of famous enka singers. There’s also a functioning jukebox at the bottom of the stairs you can drop a few yen into and blast some Misora Hibari to set the mood.
Most of this stuff was already on my to-do list so I guess I was on the right track XD
I am heading to Takayama in 2 weeks and I am looking for a local tour guide there hope I will find one

Damn, just when I was about to plan my next month's trip to Shirakawagō and the Northern Alps, you drop this video! 😳
What a coincidence! We hope you will have a great trip!
This was a very good video. It was informative without being too long or boring. Great job! One thing I was puzzled or confused with, so I'm hoping you can clarify for me, is you mentioned Shirakawago. I had read that Shirakawago was a 50 minute bus ride north of Takayama, so to me it was a separate town and not part of Takayama. Since I'm planning my first trip to Japan, I may be confused, so I'm hoping you can clarify this. Appreciate your help. Thanks, Ron
Hi! Thank you very much for the nice comment. Shirakawago is indeed a separate town but is great day trip to make when staying in Takayama. If you need more information on Shirakawago, we have a dedicated page here: www.japan-guide.com/e/e5950.html
Hope this helps!
Appreciate your quick reply and thanks for your help.

Can you visit the onsen with tattoos or are all those onsen very traditional??
I wish i had time to go there 😭
what's the difference between Gero Onsen and Okuhida Onsen? Which one should I go to if I only have time to go 1? How about Hirugami Onsen?
Its also knows for Hyouka :D
Yeah...they used takayama as a reference.
Still a dream for me to grow up and settle here and have a life with peace..😌🌳🦋
I wanna stay in a nice onsen at the mountain? Is there any nice accommodation

Are all the locations featured in this video accessable in January or does the snow stop trains and buses running?
Yes, they are all accessible around the year, and public transportation is provided around the year.
@@japanguide thanks
Is takayama the largest city by area in japan. But in google they show tokyo sapporo nagoya osaka.
Japan!!!
the video is beautiful, however the background music is higher, than the spoken word which is hard to understand
I live takayama
Takayama is so dreamy! Being surrounded with mountains in a small town is like being in an anime. I made a video about other things to do in Takayama and there's things not mentioned in this video!
Excellent video, but please, turn the music down/off!!
Any local specialties to try while i’m there?
We recommend trying the local delicacy: Hida Beef. You can find some really nice restaurants located in the old town!

For showing the Japanese pronunciation, Jin'ya is better.
Jin'ya has 3 sounds; Ji-N-Ya,
Or, 陣屋 in two Chinese characters; Jin-ya, じん-や.
The separation is between N and Y.
jinya.gifu.jp/en/
With no remarks, Jinya should have only two sounds: Ji-nya.
Most Japanese would take NYA as a cat's miaow sound.
