    I first played rugby in 1988, needless to say the game has changed a lot and I have forgotten a lot! This channel is amazing to brush up on whats what and also teach things I actually never knew. Having tons more knowledge about the game has made watching so much more enjoyable! And as a volunteer coach for U6s -U7s SUPER helpful! My colleague is absolutely new to rugby and has found this channel super helpful and very watchable! Thanks you so much! Please keep it up!

    I've found these very useful while coaching, especially age-grade rugby, as it strips out the extra complicated facets. One video I would love to see is something on kicking for touch, the difference from inside/outside the 22, the 50:22, when the ball is bounces behind the dead ball line in-goal, etc.

    Thank you so much sir. You explained it super well and that's the part that I least understood as well as what constitutes a penalty in rugby
    So am I correct saying a loose analogy is that the 9 is like the equivalent of a traditional 6 or 8 in olden football. Literally orchestrating play between defense and attack and the 10 is like the showman and headline act of the team like Zidane, Ronaldinho, Del Piero etc
    Using my analogy above so who is the rugby equivalent of a centre forward in rugby like a Raul, Harry Kane, Kluivert etc. Doing minimal but gettkng the points. It can't be the rugby 10 as you said he runs the atgackyso he is like a playmaker isn't he
    Thanks so much
    Anyone watching please quickly give me brief breakdown of a penalty and when it's awarded
    Cheers lads regards from Zimbabwe

    Thanks for the video. I have heard the #10 described as similar to and American Football Quarterback and I can see why. That said, it is really hard for me not to see the #9 as a QB type as well because how much he or she handles the ball. Is that a fair comparison? Also, really like how you use videos showing men, women, and even kids playing rugby!

    • @couchrugby
      @couchrugby  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Thanks Patrick, yes I feel its important to show Rugby is not only for big bruising men.
      In regards to your understanding of the 9, you are not wrong. The 10 is Rugby's version of the QB, but because rugby offence/attack is carried out over multiple phases before a stoppage, rather than stop after one phase or down as it is called in American football and resetting for another set play, its hard for a team to solely rely on one player to control the game. The team still need to be able to run the next phase while the 10 is on the ground or at the bottom of a ruck for example.
      So it really is a team effort between the 9 and 10 to control, the 10 is just higher in the pecking order in most teams.

    At the risk of asking a sporttalk radio question, what's a better analogy for the scrum half, basketball point guard (my view) or gridiron footbal quarterback?

    • @couchrugby
      @couchrugby  Před 10 měsíci

      mmm my understanding of basketball is limited, but if the point guard is the smaller player used to carry the ball up court and then tries to set up the taller players?💁‍♂️
      Then i would say they are more like the point guard in basketball while the Flyhalf is more like the QB in American football.

    I'm not quite sure I understand the point of the scrum if the scrumhalf is just going to roll the ball straight to their teammates anyway. What purpose does it really serve?
    And mate, your hair is gorgeous!

    • @couchrugby
      @couchrugby  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Hi Edgar
      Fair question. It's not so much about winning the ball anymore, but rather about front foot vs backfoot ball. It is very hard to attack of a retreating scrum yet amazing to attack of a scrum moving forward, especially as the backlines defensive line has to also fall back as the scrum is moving back, they have to maintain a 5m distance from the hind most feet in the scrum until the ball is out.
      So if its your put in, your are scrumming for front foot ball, and if its not your put in, you are scrumming to put your opposition on the back foot. If you win the ball against the put in, its a bonus.
      and Thankyou :)

    • @couchrugby
      @couchrugby  Před 5 měsíci

      There have been tall scrumhalves. It just means you will have to work harder than the average 9. With the right conditioning you can mitigate that a lot, but you will always have to prove that you are not hindered by your height. So your fitness will be key.

    The scrum half doesn't have to feed the ball down the middle. The law states that he/she can stand with their forward shoulder in line with the middle and then put the ball in straight. This means the ball lands on their team's side of the tunnel. The hooker must then strike for the ball or will be free-kicked. It's true that refs are sometimes lenient, but many fans don't realise that it doesn't have to go down the middle.
