    Woah! Blast to the past with this one! Not because of the franchise, or even the game, but because of those penguin biscuits. My dad is from England, and when I was a kid I used to travel a lot over to visit him, and I remember these penguin biscuits from that time, I almost forgot that they existed, as last time I were over, I did not see any of them, but... What I do remember was them being frosted, or at least you could take them into the freezer to make them into some sort of chocolate ice cream biscuits. I thought they were delicious.

  • @ashleyw9307

    I loved James Pond 3, it has some sort of quirky charm to it that I can't help but love, it was pretty tough and lengthy as well if I recall so I got plenty of enjoyment out of it. Robocod is also excellent, of course. The first game is easily the weakest of the three main games in my opinion (it's not bad though), and I don't care more for the spin off personally.
    Rather than just porting Robocod all of the time, it would be nice to actually have the whole trilogy released on modern platforms.

    • @TheDutchGhost
      @TheDutchGhost Před 10 měsíci

      Indeed. It is annoying that JP 1 and 3 have basically be forgotten. Is the second game even called James Pond 2 Robocod these days?
      JP1 is the weakest entry but the developers were probably still trying out what really worked. A remake of that game (if all got remade for a Trilogy release) could fix the flaws as I do think it have enjoyable parts too.
      I would actually like to see a fourth game with its own theme (I am not talking about the failed Kickstarter project that was basically Robocod part 2), perhaps this time using time travel to go to different time periods.
      Sadly unlikely to happen as would be a Trilogy re release as the IP is dead.

    Disappointed with your thoughts on Operation Starfish. That was my favourite by a mile. There was so much to discover, loads of hidden levels and secrets within the levels. The controls did take a little getting used to, but I loved it. This game kept me occupied for a very long time, I can't remember if I even completed it, I remember it being a pretty big game.

    Great video. I had the original James Pond on the Atari ST when I was a boy (although I found it very tricky), and was introduced to Robocod on the School PC (we had *one*) a bit later. My Dad later acquired Robocod for the Megadrive (thanks for explaining the cartridge design!), and I spammed the game for months, if not years.
    What always got me about the franchise was its absolutely unique whimsical art design, with its goofy and mischievous-looking anthropomorphised enemies and assets - not to mention the ear-worm music, which I can still remember thirty years later. I wish you'd gone into more detail about this, but I realise that art is to an extent subjective, and maybe the look of the game didn't grab you as much as it did me.
    Thanks again for the upload.

  • @RoboSparkle
    @RoboSparkle Před 6 lety +2

    Thanks for putting this together, I'm surprised that you felt so negatively about JP3 given the sheer variety of levels and the improved boss fights compared to the original games, as well as the deeper secrets and the option to play as a frog with teeth! I did recognise the TAS run of JP3 in your gameplay footage, which I think is well worth a watch as it showcases the sheer speed and impressive gameplay that is far more technical and challenging than the speedruns of either of the other two games.
    Having said all that, I wholeheartedly agree that Robocod is the best in the series and the best ending screen of any game ever. I tried to encourage people to contribute to the KS campaign with a few trilogy speedruns and we came up with a load of possible titles for the game. My favourites were "A View to a Krill" and "Goldfishfinger"
    Can you please do a complete history of Cannon Fodder sometime? In my opinion, a greatly overlooked classic game, decentish sequel, and wtf third game, would be interested to hear more about it :)

    Another brilliant video, although I have to take issue with the idea that later James Pond 2 ports have redesigned levels. The PS2 & DS versions have double the original levels, not just redesigned levels. They also have a godawful camera that wobbles as James moves across the uneven platforms; which takes a long time to get used to. Once you do, they are exceptional ports of the game however, and well worth grabbing for either console (especially because they are still very cheap).

    4:10 - That woman in the back left with the Flock of Seagulls Haircut. Ahahahahahahahahaha that takes me back. Most nostalgic thing I've seen for awhile. As a young'n I wanted that haircut, my mom said "No" but I kept begging. Eventually a babysitter took me out and got it for me. My mom was pissed. I looked fucking ridiculous, lol. A little 8 year old redheaded girl with a stupid, hard to manage hairstyle. Also good video!

  • @goddessesstartrekonlinefle3061

    Thanks, fun presentation of Pond lore! I have but one quibble, Aquatic Games is AWESOME lol.
    I recommend to anyone, at their earliest convinence, compete with their chosen closest friend in the multiplayer mode of Aquatic Games and after all the insane antics which come from that, look back and see if you still think its a weaker game ;).
    It's absolutely packed with quirks, secrets, and weird, quirky ways to score extra points and clever little ways to edge out the competition. It shouldn't be judged on its single player mode (for which your review comments are fairly accurate). There isn't a finer multiplayer game (or at least there wasn't back when Aquatic games was released).

    One of the few Amiga games I‘ve never actually played. It just looked „too cute“, which meant „kid‘s game“ to me back then. Strangely enough, now at 35 years old, I start to appreciate the colorful pixel graphics. Maybe I should finally try it out.
    Great video as usual!

    Daniel, I can't believe you didn't get the James Pond 2 Robocod (RoboCop reference). I know for sure that RoboCop was popular in the UK, Why did you think it was a Terminator reference. Robocod pictures of armor even looks like RoboCop. You should watch RoboCop Daniel, it's a great movie.

    James pond 2 was my FAVOURITE childhood game and the game that made me a gamer!!!! In my opinion you HAVE to play the megadrive version because the newer versions are soooo easy and just don't feel the same. If you know you know haha!

    James Pond 3 I primarily remember for its ridiculous password system, which was not only super long, but included the items from the game as symbols. I really wish I bought something else that fateful day in Toys R Us.

      Superfrog is inferior to Jazz Jackrabbit. And while I'm bummed that that game got a remaster and Jazz didn't, at least there was more than one game with 2 out of 3 being good and one sadly being cancelled. Thank goodness the good ones are finally available on GOG, which I didn't think would happen knowing what Epic is like these days!

    My only link to these games is either Gamesmaster or Games World on Sky. It was common to see this run as a competition, either who can get more points or finish a level quickest or what have you. I'd forgotten all about the track-and-field style game until seeing this video prodded a 25 year old neuron.
    This show always makes me nostalgic somehow =)
