  • Poinsettia flower, also known as the Christmas flower, the poinsettias origin is legendary. It is believed it began as nothing other than a child who could not afford a gift to offer to Christ on Christmas Eve picked some weeds from the side of a road. The child was told that a humble gift, if given in love, would be acceptable in God's eyes. The weeds turned into brilliant red blooms we now know as the poinsettia, and the congregation felt they had witnessed a Christmas miracle.
The species is indigenous to Mexico. It is particularly well known for its red and green foliage and is widely used in Christmas floral displays. It derives its common English name from Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico, who introduced the plant to the US in 1825, but the poinsettia isn't really a flower. Nope. Its red tops (thought to be flowers) are actually the leaves of the plant that have changed color.
Poinsettias were prized by the ancient Aztecs (the Mexican Indians) as a symbol of purity. Centuries later, the early Christian of Mexico adopted the plant as their prized Christmas Eve flower. The Mexican poinsettias are usually bright red. By design or accident, poinsettias have become as much a symbol of Christmas as Chrstmas trees and mistletoe. December 12 is National Poinsettia Day, the December birth flower, symbolize good cheer and success and are said to bring wishes of mirth and celebration.
