    gold standard, a monetary system in which currency is backed by gold-the U.S. had used the gold standard since 1879
    June 5, 1967
    Israel responds to a build-up of Arab forces along its borders by launching a preemptive aerial attack against Egypt, triggering the Six-Day War, a victory for Israel against Egypt, Syria, and Jordan
    June 5, 1968
    U.S. Senator Robert Kennedy, brother of former President John F. Kennedy, is shot several times by 24-year-old Palestinian Sirhan Sirhan at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles after winning the California Democratic presidential primary-Kennedy is pronounced dead the next day
    June 5, 1981
    The CDC publishes an article in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report describing five cases of a rare lung infection, Pneumocystis pneumonia, in young, otherwise healthy gay men in Los Angeles-it is unknown at the time, but the article is describing the effects of AIDS, and its publication is often cited as the beginning of the AIDS crisis
