My favorite ending to an episode -- not just the scientific explanation for all the species that are, you know, human people in a costume -- but for the theme of 'Coming Together' in peace. Well done to the Romulan saying he and Picard have something in common
The fact that his old mentor only died during Covid is wild. Dude was 106 years old and worked with legends like Charlie Chaplin.
And Robin Williams. And Alfred Hitchcock. .... (LOL, and other legends such as Rene Auberjonois!: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Secret_of_Harvest_Home)
In my opinion one of the most important episodes in the STAR TREK universe because it answers the question of why so many extraterrestrial races look so alike.
And then, years later, Prometheus used the idea of an alien race seeding planets with their DNA.
This really needed to be a 2 Part Episode! ....
This was a nod to an episode of the Animated ST from the early 70's, in which the Enterprise & other species learn that they all share the same origin - that is the Paak, from Larry Niven's 'Known Space' books.
More importantly, how they can all have kids together.
@@brendanfalvy1281 not always a given. I remember Jadzia and Worf got tested to see if they were compatible.
I agree that the ending, especially the revelation that all the sentient humanoids are actually related, and that they were deliberately planted by beings who simply wanted to leave the message they existed, is exquisite. Actually this episode follows the structure of a science-fiction story from the 50s-through-80s, where there's a lot of difficult scientific reasoning leading to a spiritually overwhelming conclusion. I guess I feel nostalgic about it for that reason.
The scene with Data and the Klingon in 10 Forward is one of my absolute favorites.
I remember laughing so hard at the part where the klingon says, "..That's all ?!? " ... the line is so perfect for the character of a klingon.
The alien woman at the end was played by Salome Jens. She also gives an incredible performance in a recurring role on DS9.
Yeah, are we not gonna talk about the similarities or what?
@@ScarriorIII makes me wonder if perhaps the founders name has a deeper meaning given the context of this episode
Weyoun: "Foun-der.. I'm honored we all have something of you in all of us"
I think the explanation for all the humanoid species in the galaxy is a very important revelation in Trek lore. Sure, it's a retroactive excuse for what had more to do with wanting the aliens to represent present day us in many stories and also not having the budget to create truly alien aliens. But it's also huge piece of information regarding the origin of not only man but most intelligent species in the galaxy. I wish they'd explored the idea further. But they never did. The original series did make references to "the Old Ones". But that probably had more to do with Robert Bloch, the writer who wrote the episodes that made those mentions, being a fan and protege of H P Lovecraft.
Closure on the conference?... SCREW the conference! 🤣🤪🤣 The conference was just a red herring! 😜
One of my favorite episodes. The ancient alien and the interaction with the Romulan commander are the obvious highs of the episode for me. But I have to say gals, I don't mind at all that they very clearly ignored any loose ends from earlier in the episode, simply because I always thought it kinda lends to the incredible gravity and implications of what was discovered.
Love the ending with the Romulan commander
The Chase > The Inner Light. Two episodes with a similar concept but....I just think this did it better.
05:20 - HAHAHAHAHAHA! Attack of the headphones! Poor cat is now traumatized. You better break out the soft cat food to make up for it if you want to sleep in peace again. That's what my cats would threaten. LOL!
I don't find this slow, but I've found that I don't find many things slow that others do. On the other hand I LOVE the concept, both for the in-setting implications and for playing around with sci-fi deep time. And the bit with the klingon and Data is one of my favorite bits of comedy in the series. *lightbulb goes off* "You are attempting to bribe me."
And of course it's the Romulans who see the implications. They always are thoughtful ones.
Directed by Jonathan Frakes on a story by Ronald D. Moore & Joe Menosky... That says a lot 🤓✨
I can only say that... that ending makes me bite my knuckles a lot to not say a word. Basically Picard Season One. Cannot say a word more except that you need to finish TNG and all four movies PLUS Star Trek 2009 for context about that, and you'll STILL probably want to see most of Voyager.
Also it was Joan of Arcadia.
Everything after 2005 was shit.
@@panther7748 I rather thoroughly disagree. My main reasoning is _Lower Decks._ I'm saying that right now a) because it's true and b) so we don't start any long and contentious debates, because I surmise that this should be an instant non-starter with you. I won't even defend it because I don't anticipate swaying you. Please assume the inverse is true, okay?
The actor who played the Klingon rep also appears in a video game called Star Trek: Klingon, along with the actors who played Gowron and Martok. If you'd like to see compiled footage of it, here is a link: czcams.com/video/mcTGRaPTNOQ/video.html It's not super critical to the lore and doesn't tie into anything else, but it's a fun little holodeck adventure that allows the player to learn about Klingon cultural details.
15:59 Katrina you tease!
One of the great TNG eps!!!!!!!
And now we know why aliens from all over the galaxy look like actors with funky makeup.
(8K]_/
What if god was.. all of us..?
Yah, I remember watching DS9 and thinking that character looked a lot like this ancient alien, then looking it up too.
Another quality popcorn monster video!
Very cat-heavy installment. Not to be confused with heavy cat. I'm a viewer, not a veterinarian, dammit.
Each of us has many voices inside us, but each of our voices, which seem singular to us, are themselves part of a greater whole.
This is such a stupendous, cosmos-shattering discovery, you'd think there'd be more a to-do across the various civilizations about The Progenitors. Just imagine if any of their other works survived.
I recommend you gals watch Samurai Jack. Definitely one of the best Cartoon Network shows ever.
Joan of Arcadia is the show I think she was remembering.
Thanks! I thought maybe Highway To Heaven but it’s too ancient for the GGs 😂
@@Devinn777 Highway to Heaven didn't have "What If God Was One of Us" as it's theme song.
@@firefly24601 🤦♂️ 😂
Great video! Nearly at the end though!
Definitely a "big idea" episode more than character-based or emotional, but that's fine. Sometimes Trek episodes are stories in an anthology, with familiar characters.
The very few episode(s) we see beings from other galaxies, they are not inherently humanoid. I can actually only think of one which was in TOS. But that also fits.
If you're referring to the Kelvans, they had shapeshifted into humanoid form in order to board & operate the Enterprise. Spock's mindmeld revealed them as being "immense beings with a hundred limbs resembling tentacles".
"What if we were ALL God? Or partially God?"
You mean, "What if we ALL had a 'Divine Spark'? Like a SOUL?"
Yeah, what "if". lol
Well, the Marvel Universe has a somewhat similar cosmic makeup with the Celestials and Kree, etc. having seeded countless planets as well. They went into it some in the Eternals movie.
Some would say this type of episode is what Star Trek does best while others might find it a little boring. That's the great thing about it- something for everyone! :-)
The Alien movie Prometheus also had a similar setup as well with the scene where the Engineer sacrificed itself giving its dna which eventually evolves into humans. Reading the original script and scenes that were deleted it was hinted that they had seeded other planets.
So far I've experienced "IS THAT VOYAGER'S TOM PARIS??" "IS THAT VOYAGER'S TUVOK???" and "IS THAT [DS9 INFO REDACTED]???"
Renegade Shepard is a lot of fun
I love the ******** arc on DS9!
Joan of Arcadia
This was the show
The movie 'Prometheus' was also in the same line
Those dead aliens seem to be the famous Preservers mentioned in the original series and in Shatner novels...
You've begun this journey at least three years ago because it was just before the start of the pandemic.
Joan of Arcadia: Amazing show. Wish it had a second season.
Yes! I remember that show! That was such a cool concept that God would suddenly talk to you at random through a random person and you never know who God would pick next to talk to you through.
@@DrummingWriterTrekfan84 there was a second season but the third was going to have Joan encounter an "enemy" i.e. maybe the devil. Too bad it never got made
@@Nexusofgeek yup the good shows get cut short. and the crappy shows live on lol. Sometimes. Lol! Star Trek is the exception.
In the Original Series they introduced the idea that in the Federation there was a theory of The Preservers and this TNG episode can be seen as a continuation of that thought.
Alternatively, the species introduced here was simply one that chose the seeding method rather than the transplantation method followed by The Preservers.
I remember in that TOS episode there was explicit dialogue from Kirk that excluded Earth from what The Preservers did.
@@firefly24601 Nonsense. It was postulated that The Preservers were the reason for the Indian tribe being on the planet, i.e. their ancestors were transplanted from Earth.
@@pauld6967 Hmmm.. Am I conflating that episode with a different one? I remember one episode where there's some transpanting going on, and Kirk specifically says "Our data shows life on Earth evolved independently." and then Spock says "But it WOULD explain certain aspects of Vulcan history." Maybe it was a novel.
Also, I specifically meant that the dialogue excluded humans as being transplanted TO Earth, not FROM Earth.
@@firefly24601 Probably a novel.
I don't recall any onscreen dialogue about people transplanted TO Earth. Just the speculation about why there are so many humanoids in the galaxy and about Miramani's people having been brought FROM Earth.
@@pauld6967 Ahhh, found it! TOS S2 Return to Tomorrow.
"SARGON: Because it is possible you are our descendants, Captain Kirk. Six thousand centuries ago, our vessels were colonising this galaxy, just as your own starships have now begun to explore that vastness. As you now leave your own seed on distant planets, so we left our seed behind us. Perhaps your own legends of an Adam and an Eve were two of our travellers.
"MULHALL: Our beliefs and our studies indicate that life on our planet, Earth, evolved independently.
"SPOCK: That would tend, however, to explain certain elements of Vulcan prehistory."
Good Reactions Girls. I'm sorry you didn't like it as much as I did. Keep on trucking as American's day.
JOAN OF ARCADIA
I meant to comment a couple of episodes ago, that Kat mentioned watching some other sci-fi series like Battlestar Galactica and Babylon 5. I did want to pass on both are really good series and I was going to mention Babylon 5 especially. B5 has really good characters and good stories, especially seasons 2 to 4. There are 5 seasons total. Battlestar Galactica is shorter series with 4 seasons, but still really good characters and stories. If you want a really short series, you can watch Firefly and the follow up movie Serenity. It has only 13 episodes and the movie if you want to take a break from a short time. Everyone I have seen react to it, loves it. I can understand taking a break from Star Trek if you don't want to watch and of the other series. You can burn out on it if you don't take a break since there are so many different series. Keep up the good reactions, I will be here watching.
The episode doesn't start off on the right foot either.
Galen uses that important artifact like his own personal possession.
Even if the original culture is long dead, he shouldn't be treating it like a house-warming gift.
(I've recently watched John Oliver's show where he discusses bad behavior by museums like the British Museum, literally looting other cultures and being unwilling to deal with the after effects of colonialism.)
If I had been Picard in that situation, I would have accepted the gift then re-gifted it to an appropriate museum. Because clearly Dr. Galen would not have done so.
Not really the same thing. The looted artifacts in the British Museum are from cultures that continue to exist. The civilization that Galen's artifact is from, had already been dead for thousands of years.
Everyone loves the Forbearers... Forehead...genitors...
fuck yes this is a great episode
It's a very fun episode
Wrong title! It's "The Chase", not "Lessons"!
They are one title behind. We are on 20 not 19
It was messed up last video, too. I suspect they may be off on vacation and haven't had time to fix it.
Fixed! Unfortunately not on vacation as of yet. Just been very busy and overwhelmed with edits! Thank you for catching it!
Since you guys are nearing the end of the season and will likely be going back to watching TOS for a few weeks in between, I'd like to recommend a few episodes that you might enjoy.
The Cage - The original pilot for Star Trek, filmed two years before the show premiered on television, going unaired for over 20 years and featuring an (almost) unrecognizable cast.
Let That Be Your Last Battlefield - An interesting take on the absurdity and pointlessness of racism.
Spock's Brain - Widely considered the worst TOS episode, but a big pile of stupid fun nonetheless.
The next episode is somewhat...traumatic.
Oh, you girls...
"...maybe someday I'll see it..."
--offscreen with no reaction video! HAHAHAHAHA
...or would that be just me?
It sounds like they don't have any plans to watch DS9. Does anyone know why that is? It was always my second favorite after TNG, so just curious why they aren't interested.
This is basically the plot of Halo lol
The ancient race didn't play god. They played parent. The child races not able to explain it any other way view that as being a god.
Just another excuse to bring up panspermia
17:29 you _could_ keep one of the "flagship shows" going if you watch DS9...
The first time I saw this episode, my reaction was pretty much the same. **Blah blah** **yawn yawn**
Then, at the end, unlike Paul and Kat, I just rolled my eyes.
The answer to "Why do so many alien species look like humans in alien make-up?" is "Because they're played by humans in alien make-up".
The answer "Because they share ancient DNA planted across the galaxy by a long-dead alien species," is a little too ad hoc space nerdy, even for me.
Ironically, the writers agree that, as evidenced by the lack of closure on the conference and why that ship blew up, not every loose thread has to tied up into a little bow. 😆
I guess you two don't like mysteries. Once this episode became about a mystery to be solved, I was hooked. I enjoy mysteries. The payoff was good, but the journey leading to the payoff was better to me. We are constantly trying to find out about ancient history. How did we get from there to here? Learning about the distant past is fascinating to me.
DS9! DS9! DS9!
just passing by to drop the obligatory
*W A T C H D S 9 ! ! 1 ! 1*
comment.
when you have 22 episode per season, there will always be filler.
This lame attempt to explain all the humanoid alien races (which is really because of budgetary reasons aliens on the show have to be played by human actors) would not work. Even if many worlds were seeded with the same DNA based sort of life, over four billion years evolution on each world would wildly diverge. The human form is the result of a series of chance events; the dominant life form on Earth could have easily been something quite different if events in the past had unfolded in slightly different ways. Certainly the resulting life on those different planets would be incapable of interbreeding, as most species on Earth are incapable of interbreeding with each other. So this episode is actually quite dumb and distinctly unscientific and illogical. It does not make sense. And the DNA program reconfiguring the tricorder at the end so it can project a hologram is especially inane.
I loved this episode when I first saw it, now I hate it. "Fuck evolution; it's all intelligent design, you look like this because you truly are the intended end result, you are the pinnacle of creation, all other animals are just genetic noise."
It's a terrible, ahistorical message. I get that it's giving an anti-racist argument and I applaud the attempt. I just wish it was done differently.
I think you might be reaching a bit. It simply states that some of the life in that part of the alpha quadrant was directed by their species. Other species were created in unguided processes in other locations not visited by them.
In fact, they themselves were created in completely unguided processes by evolution initially.
Lastly, evolution deals with the change of genetics, not the creation of it. So even though they were seeded, evolution performed its role as intended and led to their very different appearances.
Hopefully we can get you to love this episode again!
