I'd never heard of Grote before this video, so I looked them up on eBay. Found a PRS style that I liked for $200 and took a chance. It said delivery within 6 to 8 weeks, I received it 7 days after buying it! I agree with you on quality 100%. For the price a person will not find better than this. Great finish and nice binding work. The pick ups are good (enough) and the tuning is pretty solid. The frets were rolled nicely, level, and nicely polished. No complaints here. Thanks man!

@@kaname4251 The tuners are so so. It will stay in tune, but the low E peg isn't smooth at all. Once it is in tune, it stays there, but getting there can be a slight challenge. I plan on upgrading them soon. Can't really comment on the comparison of the two. All I can say is the build quality of mine is really nice for the price. I run a Line 6 Helix LT and I've gotten some good sounds from the pickups.

About 15 years ago I bought a guitar from Rondo Music in the "Gibson Style" called an Agile 2000. I changed the humbuckers to some Seymour Duncans and that's all since it already had Grover tuners. It's quite a heavy guitar but STILL works perfectly even though I beat the hell out of it. I think I payed about $120 for it.

My wife got me a Grote LP for Christmas last year. She knew I'd had a 1972 Gibson Les Paul but I had to sell it because money was tight and it was the most valuable thing I owned. I hated to sell it but that money saved my family's ass so that helped. . I loved the Grote as soon as I played it. Feels and sounds great.

The things about virtually ALL discount/budget brands is that you just never know what you're going to get. They save money on hardware, electronics, etc. but even the cheap stuff can still work well. They also save money on quality control, and when you get one that slipped through QC, that's when it gets frustrating.
That said, this was an awesome review and demo. Thanks!

Im really happy with it. Beautiful construction, pillowtop veneer. Came preset up, great action and the intonation is good. Plastic nut, microphonic pickups, and small pots . But for $346 delivered, it is a good deal. I purchased a Firefly copy of the ES 335 at the same time and got rid of it immediately. Now neither one of these are comparable to my Gibson Les Paul. Has nice binding everywhere, active pickups (not emg) set neck, mahogony body/nect, finished in matt black, i paid around £199, i later got £80 back as it was damaged( chip to paint on the headstock, happened in transit) it sounds and looks great, my friend played it expecting it to be awfull( gibson fan boy!) was shocked at how good it handled and sounded, i think if you do your homework and choose carefully, you can get a good non-brand guitar at a great price. Ive noticed a few guitars made by blackcat on ebay( from china) which look like they have a great finish, but ive not spoken to anyone who has one, i might have to save my pennys and get one!. All the best to ya all.

Weighing in at 8lbs. the guitar is really resonant unplugged. Given that the weak link with imported guitars like this is the electronics, I was surprised at good it sounds plugged in. I still plan to replace the pots, toggle switch, input jack, and pickups along with adding a couple of good NOS Vitamin Q paper in oil caps. But, for the $300.00 I paid for this guitar I'll still be getting away cheap for what I'll end up with!

Axel's DDO Channel i have an Agile 2000 from Rondo music and it is mahogany body and neck and it feels better then some of the $500 epiphones I've tried, I have an older model but ths newer ones are probably better than mine for about $250-$300 last time I checked, mine also weighs about 8-9lbs. I put a Duncan JB in the bridge and man it just madenit sound even better 👍, also check out Guitar Fetishist they havw aome cool stuff super cheap.

So would you all say the sound and playability of this grote is comparable, worse or better than say a $500 epiphone les paul? I've been considering an epiphone but the bodies of these grote's just look too gorgeous.

Im a cheap bastard..or I like having lots of guitars. i used to buy LP copy kits from E bay for $90 to ship to my front door. i just stain or color them to whatever I like. Do the fret work myself. i dont have any issues with them. They're all set up with low actions...stays in tune becuase the head stock isnt over tilted like a gibson. Shave the neck and tenon to my liking...They're probably came out of the epiphone factory lines
or farmed out bodies and neck lines..it's all CNC, now.
The wood are manhogany..the guitars are actaully on almost bricks.
I have a couple with triple pick ups...they're bricks...
If I get another kit..would like to have a LP black beauty custom.
I think they go for under $200, now.
I cant do an arch top yet ..or I aint doing it.lol
I know how to build my own guitars, now...I build flying V. explorers or even B.C, rich looking ones..I order the neck with binding and jumbo frets.
All the guitars i built has factory designed kinks work out of them..
      but the bodies are flat.....
It takes alot of time and work to almost hand build a guitar.
$300 is a far price...if you dont have the time or want to build one,
I can spend over 100 hrs easy building a guitar...but it's something I also enjoy doing...The sanding totally sucks ass..lmao
You have to spray 15-20 coats of clear..then wet sand it....

Grote is a "chibson" for the most part. There's just companies now that instead of selling them w/ the Gibson brand on them, they decided to change it. So, they came up with this great idea that a lot of people are afraid that Customs will seize them if they have the Gibson name and/or people won't buy them since they're "counterfeit" so they come up with a name and there you go. And Epi's are also made at the same place as most Chibsons...

    20 points! Very funny!
Nice video, very impressive playing, thanks much for the link to the back track. You don't seem to like treble that much nor the mid sound of two p/ups (I know some people hate that), I use all that stuff a lot, roll off the treble with the pots, put it back to get "savage", roll off volume for clean rythym - valve (tube) amp user. I'd be curious to see it put through that. What could one expect for small money though? Commendably short and modest video, I'd like to have seen inside the back cavities (not that hard?) to see the wiring - I think we can assume that it won't look quite like the way Gibson do it but if you've seen some Chibson (and you have) you'll understand.
Well, you don't mention customer service but....it's China, we know it's a bit of a crapshoot. A comments chap says Grote are legit, similar deal to Pierce. Nice!
My better 2014 Chibson - the neck has moved fractionally twice in three years and a bit of truss adjustment......it's OK, works, handsome, plays and sounds good, scruffy frets at the top end and a drop of Superglue to stop the top E getting snagged in a bad end but no biggie (noo p/ups, pots, bridge and nut) - my three Gibson electrics are perfectly stable over much longer. The worse of the two Chibsons, I'm going to take the blues train with it and get off without it one stop down the line - disappoint some fool somewhere, it's positively vile even to touch it and I'm ashamed.
Super, super handsome guitar, great buy. Great playing too - not at all my style but the very best of luck with that, nice video. I've too many guitars but I'll stash the Grote name just in case.....thank you. How many points did I get?
The ethics - "I don't know but I've been told......"
It's blindingly obvious that if some brainbox in an office in China would only say "Let's use our cost advantages, put decent electrics and P/ups in these things", they would make very serious inroads into Gibson - pros would buy them which currently they generally don't. There's no sign of that happening and that should be telling us something - it's controlled in the same way and for the same reasons as Epi. That's to say, Gibson have a finger in this pie. All the tell-tales of "Gibson or Chibson?" are exactly the same as "Gibson or Epi?" except the Epi headstock and logo and if Chibsons had those, they'd be absolutely identical except for quality control. Chibsons are somewhat f*cked up Epis without customer service, no warranty, no quality control, no retail distribution and bowl-of-rice-a-day wages, an almost cost-free business model and GIBSON DON'T KNOW THIS? Please!!!! Gibson are offering at the lower end the Epis.....but also that NAME which Epis can't ever have, without compromising the "All American" Gibson schtick and without competing with it either. This all began (Lo and behold!) when Gibson began to try to put it's brand on lifestyle stuff like motorbikes and kitchen ware under a CEO that didn't know one end of a guitar from another - strictly a marketing geek.
So no problems with the feds - if they are Epis (and they are unquestionably) they are Gibsons and can be made and bought and sold. The only fraud is when a scumbag tries selling it as a genuine USA model on Ebay etc and why should Gibson care about that? That's our problem only. They are genuine Gibsons - sweatbox Gibsons for those whose girlfriends will never know the difference, for guys who know two chords and how to download a drum track and amp sound to Audacity and "Hey Presto" - AC/DC! Mostly they just lie around the house (no need to keep it in a hard case, is there?) shouting "Gibson! and "America!" - brand recognition of the most famous name for guitars in the world and if they're a bit shit.....well, they have to be false-flag fakes.....it's not Gibson's fault. In use, most punters at the local hop don't know the difference and so many guitarists play so badly that it doesn't matter anyway. Ethically, it's OK as long as you don't try to sell them as real USA jobs.
I'm Brit so getting "done" by U.S. law doesn't apply to me. Were I "done" for buying them I'd certainly contest it. It's not those dirty, stinking, sneaking , conniving and underhand Chinese at all. It's downright and flat impossible that Gibson have no hand in it and no control of this - however it's laundered they are Epis.

One thing that I didn't hear you mention is how long did these pickups handle with high gain. A lot of these guitars that are Chinese typically don't have waxed pickups which results in a lot of microphonic feedback. Do the pickups on these guitars look like they've been at least wax dipped? My second question would be about the neck profile. Would you call a D or a C shape and does it feel like it's slim tapered toward the nut?
