Vienna Austria KNOWS How To Do Coffee

- Coffee in Vienna is serious business and drinking coffee at a traditional Viennese coffeehouse is one of my favourite things to do in the Austrian capital city. Even if you’re not a coffee lover, DO NOT miss out on this amazing cultural experience.

Cafes are so essential to Viennese culture that UNESCO included them on their list of intangible cultural heritage and described them as places "where time and space are consumed, but only the coffee is found on the bill." I think that sums it up! There are traditional coffeehouses as well as modern cafes that are part of the so-called ‘third wave’ of coffee.
Café Sperl is one of the classics. Established in 1880, it was a place for architects, artists, musicians, actors, singers, and VIPs like Archduke Josef Ferdinand to gather and discuss matters of the day. Fun fact: it was built according to the design of the same architects that built Vienna’s famous ring road. Even though it’s very grand feeling inside, it’s also a warm and cozy place for children to play and locals to read the newspaper while they sip a hot coffee. We ordered a popular Austrian cake called Sachertorte and traditional style coffee called a mélange (doesn’t that sound beautiful?) which is a mocca with foam. One of my favourite parts of coffeehouses in Vienna is the presentation. Hands down. Coffee always comes on a silver tray with a spoon and a little glass of water. It makes the ordinary ritual of having coffee feel like a special occasion. I love how coffeehouses in Vienna manage to be both grand and casual at the same time. Elegant yet approachable.
My absolute favourite coffeehouse in Vienna is Café Hawelka. I’ll always have a special place for it in my heart because I visited when I was 18 on my first trip to Austria. I couldn’t wait to bring Marc back to make a new memory with him. Café Hawelka feels authentic and worn in the best possible way. The space isn’t very big and that, combined with the dim lighting, makes it feel intimate in a way that larger, more fancy coffee houses can’t duplicate. Hawelka was started by a couple named Leopold and Josefine Hawelka. Leopold lived to be a hundred years old and Josefine until age 91. I got the chance to meet Josefine on my first visit there. She was still serving coffee and taking care of customers at over 90 years old. I had a coffee and Marc had hot chocolate and we just enjoyed sitting on the sofa and taking in the moment.
There’s a restaurant in Vienna that is so unique that I’ve ever never heard of another place like it: an ICELANDIC restaurant. Not so common! Marc and I met in Iceland, and our families both have Icelandic heritage, so it’s special for us. We were so excited to eat there and have a taste of Iceland. The restaurant is called Home which is exactly how it felt. Our meal was very simple but total perfection: homemade bread with salted butter, some greens, and the best fish soup I’ve ever had. This will go down as one of the most memorable meals I’ve ever had travelling. When we were leaving we thanked our waiter in Icelandic (takk!) and he was so surprised and happy to be able to speak some Icelandic. It was really nice for us to have that connection in Austria of all places.
I’d love to hear about one of YOUR most memorable meals or coffee experiences. Please leave a comment and tell me what and where it was!

What's one of your most memorable coffee or food experiences? I'd love to hear where and what it was!
The Cafe Museum, katty-corner from the Secession in Vienna. The Viennese have really perfected the idea of the Third Place, and people treat their cafés the way the British treat their pubs. I wish Starbucks would work on perfecting that feeling of gemütlichkeit that you get when you walk into a Viennese café. During our trip we were starting to miss our dogs, and a man walked in with his two dogs (something you don't really see in the States). He sat down, and the waiter brought him a breakfast, and brought the dogs some water. The dogs were very well-behaved. Later the waiter explained that one of the dogs had lost an eye to cancer.

I looked up Karma Krakow and this popped up - is this the one you mean? Looks lovely! 💕
I totally agree about Viennese coffeehouses being similar to British pubs, Mark! I had been thinking the same thing as they're such a wonderful community gathering spot for people. That's a lovely story about the dogs and I can totally picture it. I miss my brother's dog when we're travelling (she's a black lab) and I always love to pet dogs we meet on our travels :)
In hawelka if you to go for fresh late night „buchteln“
Food experience: In Austria in a small village,we were really hungry and went into a restaurant,it was beautiful old designed but absolutely full. We were asking if they have place we can sit,and they said, not today, but we were so hungry that I was asking where is another restaurant close to here? They said its not any restaurant nearby. I got upset and we left the restaurant not so friendly. Than surprise: the waiter running after us,that he found a little table for us. Ohh,we were soooo happy. Than I understood why this place was so full. The food was the most delicious,I EVER taste!!! Everything was perfectly made, nice decoration on the plate, they made it fast and the taste was just like in paradise...It was absolute perfect! Coffe: unfortunately my best coffee I was drinking was from a coffee machine.
Have live din Sydney, London, Budapest. For past seven years Vienna is home and I wouldn't swap it for any other place on the face of this earth of ours. A local favorite in Neubau, the 7th district - MELANGERIE. Plus the Cafe Landtmann for breakfast.
Cool cities to have lived in! We used to live in Sydney too :) Vienna is wonderful and I'm not surprised you love it there. Thanks for those recommendations by the way. Would love to try them out next time we're there (whenever that is!).
I can now enjoy most cafes as they put through an indoor smoking ban. I am allergic to cigarette smoke so now I can enjoy it also.
PLease please neverstop vlogging! YOU'RE SUCH AN AMAZING VLOGGER! ;)
Thank you so much!! I appreciate your lovely comment! More vlogs on the way ❤️😊
The Viennese espresso Maria Therese style is amazing....orange liqueur in the coffee with orange zest on top of the whipped cream....mmmmm good.... super fun video...I always look forward to your videos
Oh my goodness, Jim, I can almost taste the orange zest! I LOVE orange zest and have never had this type of coffee. Now it's at the top of my to do list next time I'm in a Viennese coffeeshop though - thanks for the tip! So happy to know that you enjoy our videos too! :)
How Heavenly!!
My thoughts exactly! ❤️
I watched this while drinking coffee. I have such fond memories of hanging around Viennese coffee houses. My mom and I visited Cafe Central together, and had a delightful afternoon. You're right, the presentation is part of the great experience!
whenever i visit a new place, i always always look for coffee guide
Good idea!
LOVE your vibe and the conciseness of this. Well done!!!!!
Thanks a lot, Tim! So glad you enjoyed it :)
Café Weimar close to Volksoper is good as well. (as are many others)
And for any foreigners haven´t been to vienna before, its a well known fact that foreigners usually complain about the grumpy viennese waiters. No, you didn´t do anything wrong, no, they aren´t impolite. They are just the way they should be, thats normal around here, and perfecty ok.
There are 2 things I love... coffee and your videos! Keep up the awesome work!
AWW thank you! ❤️😘
Vienna has a history with coffee and coffee shops! They spread that love for coffee throughout the Hapsburg empire. Thank you for sharing places to go now. :)
Totally! I love how it's such a part of the cultural fabric there :)
Austria 🇦🇹❤️🇵🇪
Thanks, I have the opportunity to know the country and the city. I fell in love.
Y agradecido.
I definitely need a coffee after watching this video! Just wish it was in a coffee shop in Vienna.
That would be nice! 😍
If you want a good coffee you have to go to a "Cafe", but not to a coffee shop ;)
I live in vienna, I almost never eat out.. but I watch food videos where people eat our food.. crazy.. :D
We had Melange, Sacher Torte and Apfelstrudel at Cafe Demel. They Say it was the official Purveyor to the Hapsburgs
First I visited Vienna I had coffee at Sacher Cafe and ever since I cannot drink coffee in North America. That was 8 years ago.
Thank you for sharing this video. You remind me of my beloved wife. Full of energy and passion. If you guys ever visited Vancouver Canada please drop me a line and We’ll show you lovely couple around.
Thanks for the video.
Btw, I’ll be in Vienna in 2 weeks
Just beautiful! I'm not really a coffee drinker but on a recent visit to Can Tho, Vietnam my husband and I were up a 5:30 am sitting by the Mekong Delta watching the floating market go by, we were served traditional Vietnamese coffee, things couldn't have been more perfect, one of those extraordinary travel moments that i won't ever forget!!!
Wow, what a beautiful picture that paints, Julie. I can imagine it! Vietnamese coffee is also one of my favourites and I remember the first time I tried it (sitting outside on a patio in Ho Chi Minh City). Thanks for sharing that nice memory! :)
Well the coffee there is superb! Not many of our good old Viennese coffeehouses serve such quality I might admit
Thank you for making this video! I love that you included places locals would go to, rather than coffee houses that sadly have become tourist traps in resent years (such as Cafe Central). This is a really authentic representation of Viennease Coffee Culture.
Thank you! Sorry I missed your lovely comment before! Really happy you enjoyed this video :)
My gosh!!! So beautiful absolutely charming. Never seen any of these places and the food looks wonderful :) Great job guys! So much fun! Best wishesfrom Kim & James
Hi Kim! Hi James! Yes, SO charming! There's this lovely feeling of warmth and comfort that I get in these places. Nothing quite like it! :)
hawelka and sperl are my living rooms... i also love frauenhuber
I love Hawelka! Thanks for teaching me more about it. ❤️
Me too, Rob! The backstory makes me love it even more 💕☕️
Loved this Eileen - those faced you pulled at the end!! That must have been some damn good cake ahahha
Another gem of a travel insight. Thank you!
That Sacher Torte looked really good. I have often been disappointed by them, as they are too often dry and those look anything but dry. I don’t remember where I had my first Sacher but it was stunning and what you showed looked much like my first Sacher. Yay!
+Thomas Vander Wal Thanks, Thomas! At least your first try of the cake was delicious ('stunning' is a spot on way to describe a piece of cake!) because first impressions are so important. This one was nice and moist and wasn't too sweet. Went perfectly with the coffee :)
Interesting to hear more about some of the different ways Sacher-Torte can be enjoyed. Thanks for sharing!
Oh That Sounds Great !
Yes! Super lovely :)
Another wonderful video, watching you enjoy food! We get to enjoy it all with you, and I especially love seeing your facial expressions! LOL!
As for my own memorable coffee or food experiences go, the first that comes to mind was when I was in Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada. We'd heard about a "nice little hike" up to Lake Agnes, where there was a tea house, so decided to go. Thinking I could easily hike almost 7 km, I foolishly neglected to consider that Lake Agnes was a 7 km climb UPHILL! The reward was the absolute best cup of camomile tea I've ever had. I'm not sure whether it was so delicious because of the glacier water used to brew the tea, or because I'd expended so much energy getting there!! Anyhow, the tea house at Lake Agnes and the view was lovely, and it was all well worth the trip.
Hi Linda! Thank you haha!! I also love seeing Marc's eyes when he tries the chocolate cake for the first time ;) Thanks for sharing that memory - it sounds WONDERFUL. It doesn't sound like an easy way to get a cup of tea but I'm sure it sticks out all the more in your memory for how challenging it was. Also, what a gorgeous place to do a hike!
Thats a nice review
Great video :) I currently live in Vienna and your picks are really worth it. I would suggest tho next time you visit Vienna to try Gelateria La Romana. It's by no means a traditional Viennese place, but the ice cream, hot chocolate and sweet things are the best Vienna has to offer.
Thanks, Alex! That place sounds delicious - I'll keep it in mind for my next Vienna visit! :)
Que rico se ve ese café y pastel
Hola Fernando! Estaba delicioso :)
hey guys, i really enjoy your videos, especially the one where you were in Slovakia :) keep on doing great videos
Hi! Thank you so much! Very happy to hear you're enjoying our videos! We actually made a series of videos in Bratislava in case you're interested and didn't see the others yet - the playlist is here: bit.ly/SlovakiaPlaylist :)
wow, thank you ;)
2:00 The spice must flow
You’re doing such an amazing job :’) awesome video!! Loved the story about the old lady working in her business that she and her husband created
Thank you very much! I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed the video :) Isn't that such a sweet story about the couple?! She joked that they spent their honeymoon in the cafe - so cute! Now the cafe is such a beautiful tribute to them. ❤️
Yep :') That couple were goals, so cute, to have a dream together
Thank you! We're so lucky to be able to travel and work together :) aww yeah, they are totally #goals 💕
They and their Cafe even made it into a song in vienese dialekt: czcams.com/video/6rEOd5gfKu8/video.html
Great places! :)
I've been living in Vienna for a while now, I was very glad that you included home, I love that place! :D
What did you think about Coffee Pirates? You filmed it at 1:07 but did not talk about it sadly :(
They have one of the best coffees in Vienna :)
Also, the coffee that I always drink is called "Großer Brauner" (Big Brown), which is essentially a double Espresso with a shot of warm milk, therefore it is Big (double) and Brown :D
Agh I for sure need a good coffee after that. I love your style and all the great info you pack in. Let’s connect. I wonder where we can meet up this year;) -Ash
Hey Ash! Thanks! Yeah, who knows?! It's fun to think about where our paths will cross again :)
What an investment in translation! I have to know who translated for you to so many languages and special thanks for the Hebrew one :)
Hello! I'm so glad to hear that :) We (Marc and I) add the translations and try to do as many as possible. We also have an AMAZING viewer (who is now our friend!) in Colombia who does all the Spanish translations which we are extremely thankful for! We've had other people offer to do other language translations which we really appreciate too :)
Its a nice place to visit. To drink coffee and take train there.
Agreed! Do you have a favourite spot in Vienna?
That cafe is looking so good!
Yeah, they were both wonderful! :) Which was your favourite between the two?
I dont know! All is looking yummy :-)
Too true 👌🏻
I know
Yes, the Viennese have perfected the coffee and its surrounding indoor culture, however in all fairness we need to admit to the fact it was the Turks who brought it to Vienna. The same held true for tulips, who were brought to Holland via Turkey. Turkey is the true navel and a marvel of culture in this world.
nice
no cafe central :o?
i am missing the melange in cafe center in wien
Just about any croissant or eclair in Paris, with someone you love. What could be better?
Nothing like delicious food in a beautiful place with someone you love :)
If you are next in Vienna you should visit „Villa Klein“ in Josefstadt, the 8. district of Vienna. For more information visit www.villaklein.at

imo it's too expensive. If you're not middle class, you can't afford going to Vienesse coffehouses (that aren't chains like Sorger, Auer, Barista's, Tribeka).
Lovely video, but really 'Ring Road'?
Gerbeaud confectionery in Hungary more expensive than these coffee shops, its wierd, is'nt it?
Yes, I find it surprising too.
To your question, I have a double restaurant memory in Vienna. It was during the year when I was volunteering in Sarajevo. Our organization had a fall retreat in the countryside outside Vienna, together with the groups from Glina, Croatia, Graz and of course Vienna. When we got to Vienna, I was dying for Wiener Schnitzel, which I found at Zum Leupold. When I returned to the apartment of the group from Vienna, one of the girls just finished making pasta with different sauces. That’s when I NOTICED her. Despite still being full, of course I couldn’t turn down her hospitality. During the weekend retreat, we both fell for each other.
Fast forward to Christmas vacation, I returned to Vienna from Sarajevo so that we could spend the holidays together. On a side note, I passed up the opportunity to see President Clinton visit Sarajevo to be with my then girlfriend. Anyhow, I wanted to take her back to Zum Leupold, and I got completely disoriented. We walked around town for hours and just stumbled onto Zum Griechenbeisl. Admittedly, the place can take on a touristy atmosphere during the more busy hours. Fortunately for us however, it was late and we were among the last guests in a sparsely occupied room, and it was pure romance. It wasn’t until I read the story of the restaurant later in the evening and learned that we had stumbled upon Vienna’s oldest restaurant.
While I did end up marrying a German woman, it wasn’t this German woman whom I fell for while she was spending a year in Vienna. Still, I’ll always associate Vienna with love, and my wife enjoys traveling there with me. Thanks also for sharing your story of romance in this video.
wonderful story :)
@@noizW Thanks
so, my friend how abaut u thign. GOTA COFFEE in viena
at 1:26 - "Bitte kein Handy" (no cell phones please). that's interesting. i see a person on their phone though..
Yes, interesting! I don't recall seeing that little sign at the time. 📵
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz - It’s Austria, therefore this sign is more of a kind reminder, than a strict ban. Not taking things too seriously is part of our culture.
Drinking a coffee cup while seeing your video. Mmmh, delicious 😋☕
That sounds like the perfect beverage for watching this video! Otherwise I think you'd be craving a nice coffee ;) Hope you enjoyed (the video AND the coffee)...!

Eileen you so beautiful
Where you from? You sound American accent
Sadly the most old Viennese "Kaffeehäuser" are not more than a extremly expensive tourist trap. (Central, Landtmann, Hawelka, Westend, ...) At the Cafe Central theres mostly a huge line and a long waiting time... If u know the Viennese u know, nobody will do that for a coffee and a cake, in a city wher u can get that also in many (!) other places - for a better price and better quality. The Cafe Central and the Cafe Westend has the same story, but Westend is can-food-style and frozen supermarket cakes, absolutly no-go!
This "coffeehouse-culture" is today more a show for visiter... I think this culture died with the good old newspapers (today 60% of the austrians read the same cheep and populist Kronenzeitung), and for the "working class" here it's really to expansive to sit here for hours and spend 40€ for a meal, coffee and a cake!
For all visitors they want the real flavor of the Kaffeehaus today - Cafe Jelinek is a good example for one authentic old Coffeehouse who is alive. Sperl and Ritter also not bad, but a bit to expansive, a bit to much tourists...
Dd
pool? no. big no go. carambol. no coffee house that earns it name has a pool table. that´s for pubs and drinkers. :D
