    On thing I feel like you missed with Nobunaga's Ambition in regards to its quest is the story aspect of it. Shogun 2 usually makes randomly generated quests that are simply "hey build this, kill that." whereas Nobunaga's ambition also doubles as a visual novel that gives a lot of reason behind your actions. Let's take the conflict that led up to the battle of Okehazama and the
    Shogun 2: you're at war with the Tokugawa and Imagawa. You're pretty much obligated to annihilate the Tokugawa clan and eventually the Imagaawa.
    Nobunaga's Ambition: You have a cutscene where the death of the head of the Matsudaira clan (which is accurate, it won't be until much later they name themselves Tokugawa), Nobuhide kidnaps the heir, Takechiyo, who ended up befriending Kipposhi, aka Nobunaga which sow the seeds of what's to come. Eventually after the death of Nobuhide, the clan splits in to two and you're on a campaign to finally unite Oda under 1 banner. Eventually you have a special battle in Okehazama and you basically wipe the floor with Yoshimoto and kill him. This suddenly causes the Tokugawa to defect and declare independence.
    All of which happened in real history, and is translated throughout the game with famous events and cut-scenes that has been repeated in every iteration of the series to the extent it's tradition.
    and this is just 1 morsel to a plethora of cutscenes and events just within the Oda clan alone, let alone the Shimazu, Imagawa, Takeda, Date, and so on.

    • @Lin-ij9vk
      @Lin-ij9vk Před 3 lety +5

      @@sowpmactavish you can but why would you? Vassalizing clans tend to be far more trouble than they're worth and especially at the start of the game where you need to expand you're putting yourself and the tokugawa in a position where they can't expand this they won't provide any meaningful support to your economy or war effort. Or, you can let them expand (or rather support them), which then they will be enough of a threat to declare independence. You can of course make them happy enough to not backstab you but you are going through a lot to justify having a vassal when you can simply take over and develop that province yourself. Honestly the vassal system in shogun 2 leaves a lot to be desired

    Total War mastered the large scale battle. Koei Tecmo mastered well....you could say historical accuracy (except Dynasty Warriors, that one is mostly novel accurate)and giving love for a character/officer

  • @juanignaciodecarlofadu6304

    First time playing Shogun 2, it was kinda hard for me to grasp the economics and diplomacy mechanics (also my first time playing a Total War game, as all I had played up to that point was AoE, American Conquest and the Stronghold series). But the meticulous morale system, the unit counter system (AKA 8 dimensional rock-paper-scissors), the epic scale of the battles and the kickass music fully bought me into the experience. Learned through the ABCs of ground battles, and enjoyed every second of the enemy cavalry getting torn to shreads by some Yari Ashigaru holding their ground with a pike wall.
    It was two whole weeks in which I played nothing but Shogun 2, and I still never won a single campaign bc I'm not really good at RTS games lol. It was as if I was playing a game I never knew I needed.

    Nobunaga's Ambition's attention to historical detail is something that must be considered when compared alongside Shogun 2, which has anachronistic details like metsuke and geisha assassins in the Sengoku Jidai when both are Edo period concepts.

    • @jeffreysams3348
      @jeffreysams3348 Před 4 lety +6

      I think one should not overthink it. The metsuke/geisha just represent espionage/counter espionage as well as assassins. (admittedly in the Sengoku period it was questionable if dedicated assassins existed). But clearly daimyos did put resources into espionage and counter espionage even if the terms ninja and metsuke were not really used.

      I wish that Shogun 3 should use the 3 kingdoms system as it has improved many aspects I disliked about Shogun 2 like the generic randomized characters and adding unique legendary heroes and generals. They could make the game in the vein of three kingdoms where you have romance and records, it could work in a Sengoku Jidai game. Plus the diplomacy is awesome and I like the battles.

    Shogun 2 is a European wargame with a Japanese skin.
    Playing it you'll actively unlearn Japanese history.
    Peak, if bullshit, aesthetics.
    Nobunaga's Ambition is the staple. You learn the history and get to live out some of the realities of the era, depending on what that particular title is focused on.
    Peak history simulation.
    Takeda for battle autism. Some of the above games try to actively make you dumber (Shogun 2), some go with various forms of abstraction (NA) but this game goes all out to accurately simulate the absolute mindfuck that was Sengoku period unit tactics.
    Peak detail autism.

    One issue i have with shogun 2's family tree is when the daimyo dies, the family tree just moves on. So anyone related to the new ruler had a title like "brother" (brother to the now dead daimyo), this title is lost, and there is no way to check what relation they have to your clan leader

      @Avocado Panda More so kind of made up. Total War tends to prioritise fun over accuracy at certain points, which is fine as it's just a design philosophy thing. There was never really a clan. Mostly just a confederation of families that made up the area of Iga. They did have good relations with the Rokkaku clan though and fought in some of their battles.

    I can't remember how/when both games wound up in my library, but thanks for the video to help me choose which one to play. One minor bit of feedback: since your channel focuses on samurai games, it would probably be a good idea to learn how to pronounce sengoku jidai. You've got the vowels and consonants right, but not the rhythm/vowel emphasis. It's hard to write it in a way that will actually convey the pronunciation, but try putting the emphasis on the "sen" and say it all as one word, not as separate syllables. So SENgokujidai, not sen go ku ji dai. (You can hear it from a native speaker at czcams.com/video/5yUXVTX8iWw/video.html&t=12)
