    I will say, it's genuinely interesting and a little unusual to see a villain who's driven those below him into poverty...so he can pursue an art form that he genuinely loves. Most villains, especially in stories like this, aren't allowed to have such genuine appreciation for art and beauty. And you can't say the movie is vilifying dancing, because all the good guys dance too.

    • @johnvinals7423
      @johnvinals7423 Před rokem +57

      Like Diva said, this movie could have been so freaking good in the right hands. The whole dance thing alone could have been fascinating as a way of displaying the difference between the selfish hoarding of art and culture by powerful shitheads and the artists who want to share what they create with the world.
      See also: the bridge being destroyed just before Polly sees the truth about Feathertop being a symbol of “You can’t go home again. You have to keep moving on and find new things to love and new people to cherish because you can’t live forever in a fantasy of what might have been”.

      If only the movie did a better job (or _any_ job) of contrasting his relatively benign motivation with the misery he inflicts on his employees and the inhabitants of his town. Miss Bee Bee's unnecessary fourth-wall-breaking/exposition just makes me appreciate the Emperor's New Groove (even though it came after this film) a bit more. Kuzco broke the fourth wall by narrating what was happening at certain points and at one point stops the movie to remind the audience "I'm the main character," but there it served a purpose (however small), it highlighted how self-centered he was and the very last time we hear narrator Kuzco, he's interrupted by the Kuzco on screen when he's at his lowest point (where we see Kuzco at the very start of the movie) and starting to realize that he's not as blameless as he thought he was. Miss Bee Bee being able to break the fourth wall doesn't reveal anything about her and neither does the exposition she provides, it's just a dumb gimmick here.

    This movie is my guilty pleasure!
    Whatever its flaws, I've always admired its "Beauty and the Beast" touch
    Your mention about how poorly-handled the ending was has inspired me to think up an alternate plot line:
    For a bittersweet ending: After Max saves Scarecrow from being burned, the two have a brief debate where Max makes an irrefutable argument that Scarecrow can't hope to grow old with Polly because (A) their marriage would be built on a lie and (B) he's an ageless scarecrow. Scarecrow sadly concedes and arrives at the church at the same time as "Feathertop". As inconvenient as his timing may be, Scarecrow confesses to Polly he's the real Feathertop, while Grisham (disguised as Feathertop) smugly argues he's also the real deal. Although it would be easy to fall on instincts and fear the talking scarecrow, Polly ultimately trusts her heart instead of her eyes (since Grisham's selfish personality is rather transparent), sides with Scarecrow, and rejects the imposter Grisham. While expressing she's disappointed in his lie, Polly also forgives Scarecrow on the principle he told the truth, and is also happy to know the Scarecrow she grieved for is all right now. But Scarecrow's status as a bewitched heap of straw means he's still an outsider to the town, and he and Polly sadly part ways. We pick up with Grisham plotting to kill Polly for rejecting him, eventually coming up with his "destroy the bridge" scheme. Scarecrow intervenes because he recognizes Polly has the right to live her life. Grisham meets his end, Scarecrow saves Polly at the expense of his life and dies. The story ends on the note that Polly and the orphans made the most of their new life of freedom, so Scarecrow's death was not in vain.
    For a happy ending: Instead of dying, the magic brings Scarecrow back to life as a human since he gave his life for Polly (per Miss Bee Bee's condition). But he doesn't know that. Once they reunite, Scarecrow selflessly urges Polly and the orphans to move on, but both parties are surprised when they realize he's still human despite missing his "lucky" feather. He is Feathertop forever more.
    Overjoyed by the "miracle", Feathertop and Polly decide to marry after all, and build their new life of freedom together with the orphans. Years pass, the town flourishes without its servitude to Grisham, Feathertop has reopened Miss Bee Bee's dance studio as its new teacher, and he and Polly have taken up residence in Miss Bee Bee's homestead (where Polly's wish for a real home has come full circle).

I do like the dance moves and I can draw the moves all day but as a story I think that it needs some good writing in some areas of the movie and like you said in your arms is a good song . For me it was kind of boring in some places and comedy in some places but it is a better idea than a scarecrow being a dead lover. I don't remember if I already posted this observation (couldn't find my original comment if I did) but I actually think combining Feathertop's true self being revealed in reflections, with a vain antagonist who has a room full of mirrors, was a good idea, and that the concept could work if the theming involved was explored more. Something, something, reflection as both noun and verb, the ability to reflect on who you are and how your actions affect others, something, something, Feathertop's mirror realization that he's living a lie and hurting Polly in the process, something, something, Grisham spends so much time with his reflection but can't reflect on himself, perhaps he's scared of looking inward so he will only look at the surface, something, something hero fears his physical reflection because he doesn't want to be confronted by the truth of who he really is, but learns to overcome it, while villain superficially adores his reflection and uses it to ignore who he really is

That matters, because this is one of those animated films that also lectures kids important life lessons, so that know how the world works in a way that actually makes sense to them. “Disney’s Aladdin” and “Illumination’s Sing” are perfect example of films that have situation similar to “The Scarecrow”. And in both those films, both of the leads had to learn the hard way about the consequences of lying.

    Animation is a medium with a lot of potential, it can show things we can't see in live action.
    But the dances in this movie are to stiff, it shows that all are rotoscopied. I think if they would have been fully animated, more vivid and lively this would be a better movie, since dancing is so important to the story.

  • @LadyBrightcynder
    @LadyBrightcynder Před rokem +24

    Not sure how I feel about the animation in this movie. There's some moments where it's really fluid and nicely done, like the dance sequences, but everything else is stiff and has missing frames. I can imagine the majority of the animation budget went towards the dance scenes, but it looks unfinished overall.

      Well, that's what happens when you have Richard Rich working on a film for the same company that did Quest for Camelot and that's not a good thought.
      On the bright side, at least the Iron Giant did Warner's justice despite it's poor box office.

      The dance scenes are rotoscoped, hence the sudden fluidity and why it seems so jarring next to the other sequences. Rotoscoping can work really well (Don Bluth did it a lot, also for dancing), but it definitely stands out more when the other animation isn't as fluid.

    I was crunching some numbers last year for reasons I will not go into, and you may find these results interesting:
    Chances of ever hearing that term in a CZcams video: .0001%
    Chances of ever hearing that term in a Musical Hell video: 87%
    Numbers don't lie.

    OK. I might have to watch this. Ms. Bee Bee popped up on screen and I'm like, a Richard Rich film? And I'm sorry, but I have a small soft spot for Richard Rich films. Swan Princess and the animated Bible series were films I watched over and over. Something about the character designs and, while not always the greatest, the animation I just really liked. And thus is tickling that nostalgia bone even though I've never heard of it before.
