A wood carving knife and simple hand chisels such as a V tool and a small #9 gouge
The wood used for these wood carving basics
I like to use basswood in all my carvings. This wood carving project is no exception. Find a reputable wood dealer and stick with him/her.
    Wood Carving on Cottonwood Bark
Some of my videos use cottonwood bark. Again, find someone who can provide bark for you or you can hunt for cottonwood bark yourself. The tree must be dead for some time for the bark to come off. I sell bark at the local wood carving shows. However, I do not sell via mail because the shipping costs are sometimes more than the cost of the bark itself. But if you don’t mind the huge shipping costs, let me know and I’ll send you some.

Thanks for this demo - i really enjoyed this. There's very little people carving women on CZcams.
I've found male figures in general are somewhat easier to carve due to women having much finer details and require more accurate proportions to make them lasteticly look correct. Now I'm hoping to add more women to my mimi figure family to even up the Male to female ratio. Friends keep reminding me about equal rights haha.
    Thanks again

I just found these videos and they are perfect for me! So far, I have carved women's heads on two violins and two dulcimers, but they ended up looking more like what I would call "proto-humans"! The dulcimer heads were in walnut and the violin heads were maple. It's a very slow process for me, removing very small amounts of wood. I'm currently building a dulcimer out of cherry and will follow these three videos for it. The size of the head is just right for a dulcimer! Thanks!

Basswood. Most any wood would do, but basswood is the carver's favorite.
