Over the years, "THE BIG PICTURE" has covered the Tokusatsu genre's quixotic presence in world media extensively; from the influence of the Japanese SPIDER-MAN adaptation to the long-running POWER RANGERS franchise to oddities like SUPERHUMAN SAMURAI SYBER-SQUAD and even the forgotten MYSTIC KNIGHTS OF TIR-NA-NOG. Now, that coverage is collected here in one set; including brief looks at LADY BATTLE COP, DINOSAUR WAR IZENBORG and GO GO ROBOTTIE.
This episode of "THE BIGGER PICTURE" collects a selection of full and segmented pieces covering Japanese live-action television, both in the original format and in forms re-edited for Western viewers or into features. While the best effort has been made to get the best footage/audio available, copyright and source issues do not always allow that to be the case.

I’m in.
Welcome.
I didn't realize HOW in I was until I started seeing henshin clips on TikTok. Kamen Rider is amazing.
I would totally watch an anime that's basically "Samurai He-Man turns into Lion-O, but also has a Super-Saiyan form that makes him the Rocketeer." Throw in the other transforming cat-dudes as teammates from different eras and give it to Trigger, and...another SSSS:Gridman for the masses?
that would be awesome
I went into this without realizing it was an hour long and actually sat through all of it in one viewing.
I wonder if Bob knows that he can put “bookmarks” on the playback slider so we can easily choose what part of the video we want to watch.
That totally changed how I watch videos and I hope every creator starts using them.
Do you know the name of the CZcams video where MovieBob discusses the Hong Kong origins of Tokusatsu?
Still hoping for that Ultraman episode someday.
Me too.
he's gonna need several to properly explain ultraman cause once you start reading into the history of ultraman and tsuburaya productions it gets complicated.
@@richardauthement3105 He should mention a Thorn worse than 4kids, a Thai Company named Chaiyo.
Dear God, I never knew that I needed Shogun Warrior so much.
Holy crap, after seeing the Mystic Knights outfits, I suddenly remembered the toys from it
Bob: Do ya think Japan looked at this and thought, "yeah do ya think that this is a little too much...us?"
*I can't breath
That captain America concept was the main concept for G-Gundam too so good to see that made it's way to the light eventually
Remind me who looked at "decapitated robot bug Jesus" and said, "this is perfect for a kids' show!"
Someone whose native religion doesn’t believe in Jesus, probably.
there's something about Ms. America's hair over the mask, that's always been nightmare fuel for me.
It looks like a fetish outfit to me.
@@omechron the entire team looked like they were wearing fetish outfits honestly.
@@richardauthement3105 I mean, Super Sentai fetishes aren't uncommon
yeeessssss
All the glorious craziness of Japan, condensed into a single genre
I am enjoying solo mode.
Had a pretty terrible day so this video was a nice surprise to end my day on a good note - keep up the amazing work, Bob
I love how bob can make an hour of compelling content out of talking about how obviously weird tokusatsu is.
I'm rather dissappointed that there haven't been more international versions of Power Rangers. Mystic Knights of Tirnanog is one thing, but what about King Arthur, or the Argonauts, or the Ancient Egyptian myths?
They tried Kamen Rider...twice, but it's never stuck.
@@zeterzero4356 The Second Try was at least alright.
bob: "remind me to tell you about that some day"
if you don't: "i'll read this note to self when i revisit the video..."
if you do: "sorry guys, there isn't that much about the street-sharks, i don't know what you want from me here"
..... "uhm, you asked us to remind you"
I like these notes.
I'm not gonna lie, the Tokusatsu characters playing golf threw me for a loop.
"Yup, that's a Lady Battle Cop". I died.
I wonder if we could get the Irish CZcamsrs to remake The Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog?
I for one want to see Call Me Kevin, Rumbly Tumbly Dan "RT Games", Jack Septic Eye--and the like five others (at this point) that I'm not as familiar with just jump in, and remake the same show using Fiver and... well, the expected special effects you would expect to see from them
Also, RT Dan has already destroyed one nice suit (he was "fighting the demons" when he did it too) so... that could be his thing... constantly having his costume damaged "for eye candy reasons"
My parents bought me a Juspion Battle Tank in 1986... greatest. toy. ever.
A friend of mine had the fully transformable (is that a word?) giant robot from Changeman. Five different robots into one. It wasn't sold over here, I think his dad brought from his time in Korea. I wanted to steal that so bad
SSSquad was one of my favourite shows as a kid! I'm glad it got a revival
I love Toku so much. I'm 100% a Kamen Rider fan and yes, I LOVE KR Wizard. fight me! lol
I'll fight you for... Wonder Ride books and mysteriously disappear after the battle
Why would i fight you? I also like wizard
That's cool. Regardless of what the general opinion of Kamen Rider Wizard is, I really like the motif and overall aesthetic of the show.
I liked the villains in Wizard.
If i'd have known when i was a kid Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad would turn in SSS Gridman, one of my fav animes of recent years and later Dyanzeon, something that is somehow EVEN BETTER, i'd have paid more attention to it!
Please talk about PreCure, since this Anime Franchise is considered an Honorary Tokusatsu.
Thanks to Saban, americans never got to know some of the absolute best tokusatsu ever, like Metalder, which they bought the rights to do VR Troopers. Also, really nice to see some Lion Man love. The originals, white and orange. Under that silly furry suit there was surprisingly good storytelling, well above the usual stuff we see in the genre. It even broke from the "monster of the week" format with more frequency than usual, with longer arcs going on through multiple episodes. The fights are above the average as well.
Shout Factory seems like THE Only Company who's Saving Tokusatsu with their Kamen Rider, & Super Sentai Imports.
We have to wait for Saban's Demise, before Shout Rescues Toku.
Don’t you mean, Lion Maru?
@@TheDragonman104 I'm from Brazil, and it was released as Lion Man here just like Bob said in the video, weirdly enough. Old habits die hard. Thankfully we got a lot of original, successful tokusatsu without Saban's butchering in the 80s and 90s, that's how I know Metalder instead of VR Troopers. Shows like Changeman, Flashman, Jiban, Jiraya and Jaspion were the ones that made the genre popular here, not Power Rangers
That Japanese Bettle Fighter theme goes hard af
You really outdid yourself on this one Bob. I can't imagine the research time that went into this.
I'm not a fan of any of these shows and I was just totally fascinated by its history. Kudos.
What a wonderful world we live in. Tokusatsu forever!
This video is exactly what my Saturday morning needed
A glorious compilation
And that's why I love tokusatsu because of weird it is
Omg looking at the 3rd season of be robot as soon as he said the refree I yelled
"Thats shaolin showdown"
I had the same thought. And as a kid I loved the hell out of Xiaolin Showdown. That + cute robots would have been a hit I think.
@@rhymebeat1142 agreed
Could you do a pitch on how you think setting up Spider-Verse and the Sinister Six in the MCU could work? I know a lot of rumors are going around now but it seems like we're definitely getting it now!
90% of this video is Bob saying: Yup that happened 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Also furry Highlander 🤣🤣
Bob, I would love to see more of your takes on other toku stuff -- like a deep dive into Kamen Rider, and perhaps even the various attempts to localize it, especially "Kamen Rider Dragon Knight", a version of KR: Ryuuki that was made by Steve "Guyver: Dark Hero" Wang, and actually won a Daytime Emmy Award in 2010 for "Outstanding Stunt Coordination", a category introduced to the Daytime Emmys that year.
Kamen Rider alone has been running so long and with so many weird variations on the same basic concept that you could easily make multiple episodes on it. (I myself got *really* into it with Zi-O - yeah, not a great place to start, since it's an anniversary season with lots of callbacks, cameos, and in-jokes from previous seasons; or maybe the best place to start for the same reason - and kept on watching through Zero-One, which I didn't like at first but grew on me by the end, and now I'm watching the high school silliness of Fourze while waiting for the next episode of Saber to drop)
@@zazelby Kamen Rider is actually older from Super Sentai, what was created as its spin off.
@@TheRezro I know. I kinda want to watch the first-ever season/series and some other early Showa stuff, but my "source" only goes back to Kuuga.
@@zazelby First one is actually quite decent if someone like old Japanese movies. V3 is basically fallow up. X is weird, Amazon is even weirder (though it has really decent reboot titled Amazons). Stronger is a joke. Skyrider was decent. Black is probably best from Showa and relatively easily to find. Black RX is not good, despite being direct fallow up. Oh, and Super-1 is also weird. If you like genre I would also suggest you to check Garo series.
Fuun Lion Maru is basically Feudal Japan Tokyo Mew Mew
If Supida-Man doesn't show up WITH Marveller in the next Spider-Verse movie, I will riot.
Hell, if he doesn't show up in MCU Spider-Man 3, I will riot.
yeah, two separate franchises doing the spiderman meets other selves from the multi-verse and neither of them having one of the more interesting and just plain weird concepts of that idea would be a crime.
Disney Plus really dropped by the ball by not getting streaming rights to Supaidaman in the first place, but I bet Toei asked for mountains of cash for the license fee.
I think what make Tokusatsu formula work is the fact that originally those were shows for older audience, but made in a way so kids could watch them to offset costs (in the past those special effects were ambitious). It is why Japanese shows tend to handle serious topics, but balanced with sizable doze of light humor, using camp as advantage (it is also why Robocop work). Sadly most modern shows assume that kids are stupid and fantasy is childish (that affect also modern anime, when in the past Japanese creators didn't care). Gladly MCU at least for now doesn't care what whiners think.
3:30 - Great that you mention it. Combattler V and Voltes V (read as five) have been licensed by Discotek, and predates GoLion (OG Voltron) by a decade. I can't wait to hear you cover this and more tokusatsu! Keep up the great work, Bob!
I love tokusatsu so much this is going to be a great watch for me
Japanese spiderman is my new definitive spiderman
It's so weird to think that Super Sentai J and the Japanese Spider-Man were closer in time to the release of MMPR than we are to MMPR. Also what's with Tokusatsu series and crucifying their heroes?
Looking forward to those Shogun Warriors and Ultraman episodes some day! Both I remember growing up with.
I would like to report now that Lionmaru, Hyoman (Leopard Man) and Tiger 7 have had comic book one-shots this year from Antarctic Press under the heading Spectreman Heroes.
Just thought people should know that.
The male of that sibling duo in the Attack of the Super Monsters clip reminds me of an old 70s toku show you might want to look at called Android Kikaider. Had a bunch of sequels and even an anime remake
My problem with the rise of Power Rangers is that it overshadowed Gargoyles, a better franchise to hang a fandom on.
ehh Gargoyles problem is more Disney's tendency to shun things from the Eisner era. Jordan Pelle has been trying to get gargoyles movie off the ground for awhile.
Personally, I don't think Power Rangers harmed Gargoyles all that much, especially since it was alot more Mature in its elements, alot more so than Power Rangers.
Lmao Disney hated PR while they had it. They slashed Operation Overdrive's budget. They were more than happy to sell it back to Saban.
poparena's piece on the knights of tir na nog was much more in-depth. If you like the sort of thing-remembering Bob does, I think you'd also like the poparena stuff. Did a whole series on goosebumps and nickelodeon, too.
I can't be the only one who thinks some of those power ranger knock-offs should be rebooted for todays kids.
Loved this! More tokusatsu Super Sentai and Kamen Rider and more!!!!
The way saban marketed BBB and BBM back in the day was pretty much a more armored up version of power rangers, the chibi cuteness and overly playful tone of kabutack wouldn’t have done well in America especially with all the action shows that were on fox kids at the time, it’s kinda the reason next mutation didn’t do well because it was a bit too goofy
Man I loved beatleborgs as a kid.
That SSSS Gridman segment gave me Rikka flashbacks...
Japanese Spider-Man has traumatized my wife
was it the giant robot or the whiplash that was the entire series?
Show her Unico mentioned in this material 😈
Good
Speaking of Super Samurai Syber Squad and Gridman, they are showing Gridman on they official YT channel so anyone interested can check that out by themselves to see what that series is like.
If you talk about Ultraman, please talk about a Lawsuit Between Chaiyo vs Tsuburaya, & Kamen Rider about The Legacy of Shotaro Ishinomori.
Btw bob, you forgot to mention about Denjiman and Sun Vulcan which are technically owned by Marvel and Toei and is the first appearance of Hella of Thor Ragnarok fame
Disney Plus should Stream Battle Fever J, Denjiman, & Sun Vulcan on their App.
I just realize gavan song is really similar to solbrain reff
8:32 as a Power Rangers fan I hated every clip I saw of that movie, I haven’t seen the full movie but saw the several clips and everyone has annoyed me and I’ve heard nothing that makes me think it’s worthy of being called Power Rangers.
Now im not saying that beetleborgs turning into a chibi sports show in its 3rd season woudnt have been weird as fuck, but im pretty sure they could have made that work.
i like ooo
If P's Toku is as Ongoing as Sentai & Riders, We would have had Horse Pirate, a Girrafe Knight that uses his Neck like a Mace, Doggy Cowboys, & a Weasel....IN SPACES, & also an Elephant playing Children's Cardgames on Motorcycles.
NO! I want Captain America Super Sentai!
Kevin Fiege should Convince Disney to buy Hasbro, so that Power Rangers is on the watchful eyes of Marvel Studio.
It needs more Furry Samurai Action.
59 ish minutes in THATS Rodan’s roar
One day we'll get the Ultraman deep dive we all crave. For the longest time I thought grid man was part of ultraman. I really like SSSS on upn
Wow
Japan, why is your weirdness so infectious?
Because they're really *really* good at market research.
It’s weird, but that’s why we love it!
Is Shaolin Showdown based on Kabutak?
An hour plus of material on this topic. Let it not be said that MovieBob doesn't put in the work :)
Tokusatsu may be weird, but in terms of effect, they already want to use a real explosion and are willing to take a risk rather than a stop motion hollywood movie, it looks a bit fake, take the example of Redhosaurus and King Kong in 1934. If tokusatsu can still be made real, for example, Godzilla, which looks giant, has real skin. And the realistic movements at that time didn't have CGI, but they can produce films like that, so that's in my opinion
SSSS was my SHIT!!!!
I wish you would have reviewed Kamen Rider Kuuga when it became available earlier this week... watching it I discovered a show that was just GOOD solid TV. Not just specifically a good Kamen Rider or good tokusatsu... good TV. Great cast, great secondary characters, intrigue and powerful ENDING. Also, I feel like Shin Kamen Rider could make a good Schlocktober episode.
Shin Kamen Rider = What if Ishinomori directs a Horror themed Kamen Rider.
@@conradojavier7547 Ishinomori even has a cameo in it!
You should watch OOO or Build, they're great seasons too
@@leonishikino6873 didn't get into OOO, but I loved Build. I mentionned Kuuga because it's available legally.
The recent power rangers movie was alright.
This!, Fucking this!
He was actually talking about Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie from 1995'e.
Nah it was mediocre.
What? Bettle borgs is more than one season. I remember that and I thought it was just like SSSS.
J.A.K.Q. is simple read and said as "jack" or "jakka" but "jack would be more appropriate.
GODZILLA
Is there a new Power Rangers movie? Are they rebooting it? Or a new team to borrow from the original super Sentai format?
Still waiting for the kamen rider episode...
waiting for D+ to get their own Sentai show
Maybe make a Jedi turned Kamen Rider ripoff named "Force Speeder".
Wait did Bob ever end up talking about Masked Rider? The u.s version of kamen rider?
Romantis saat memandangi tentorina.
I liked mystic knights, it was the best of the bad bunch that saban splurged out 😅
Aw, no Super Inframan? 🙁
IMO Tokusatsu that aren't from Japan such as Inframan, the Hanuman and Jumborg Ace stuff - would make their own interesting retrospective, with the weird lineages and licensing, and trends involved.
Tiger Seven is great tho
Any chance to get an episode on Mito Komon?
I would like Marvel Studio or Lucasfilm to use 80's & 90's Era Tokusatsu as inpirations on Low Budget Streaming Shows.
Tokusatsu is the shit; I love it in all it’s weirdness
Tonkatsu is delicious
Kotatsu is a table
I love tokusatu and all its wierdness
In Japan nothing is really considered weird there .... until it is. 👀
34:34 I feel that I should at this into the comments. Reuben Langdon was also part of that franchise in 2 different ways. He played a character in the Metal Heroes series and he also played a character in Power Rangers Time Force.
56:28 I am immortal! I have inside me the blood of kings!
57:32 Huh? How does a jetpack wearing lion comes into play?
1:01:36 Wha... da... faaaaaaah?
1:05:31 What...dah...fuck?!
FWIW, I think "sentai" or something would be a more accurate and descriptive term than "tokusatsu" for 90% of the stuff discussed in this video. Even where there is only one hero (and so not a "fighting team") the tropes and imagery are still obviously very closely linked to the Super Sentai franchise and related media. "Tokusatsu", at least in Japan, is a broad term for special effects in general, as seen in the "Toho Tokusatu Eiga DVD Collection" from around a decade ago, which included, among others, the Kobayashi Masaki classic "Kwaidan".
BTW, regarding 53:28, it's a little disappointing to see this wasn't excised or amended for the compilation video. I will admit that "warring states" is used by some specialists as convenient shorthand and my comment on the Escapist upload of the original video kinda missed the mark by not calling it out for calling the 16th century "ancient".
That being said, at least these videos are of course always much better-researched than some other CZcamsrs I could mention *ahem* despite Bob not repeatedly claiming to be an "expert" on Japanese history like said other CZcamsrs *ahem ahem*
But many of the tropes predate Sentai with shows like Kamen Rider and Ultraman. It might be most accurate to say “superhero tokusatsu”.
Super Sentai is younger than Godzilla(1954), Ultraman(1966), and Kamen Rider(1971). SS started in 1975, the 1978 Spider-Man started the trend of Sentai having mechs, which is why Battle Fever J(1979) was the first season of Sentai to have a mech(the first two seasons had jets). The iconic Mighty Morphin Power Rangers used footage from Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger(1992-1993), the 16th season of Super Sentai.
@@malcomalexander9437 I know that. If you read my comment more carefully, you'll see that my point was that Godzilla and othe non-sentai tokusatsu properties are not what was being talked about in the video. I admit Ultraman and Kamen Rider might have been a bit of an oversight: I've never watched either myself, but is the modern Japanese popular conception of them as being about teams of heroes fighting monsters (something I have gathered from walking past toy shops in the mall and looking at the Happy Meal toy displays in McD's) just a later reaction to Super Sentai?
EDIT: Wait, I need to read my comment more carefully, because I DID address those before anyone else reminded me of them.
@@AdamYJ Meh. That would work too, I guess. But the bits of Ultraman and Kamen Rider that predate "Sentai" are only a small minority of those franchises at this point (see below).
Haha imagine if there was a tokusatsu version of doctor who 😂😂, karate timelords
Just so you know Bob, things are VERY badly slowing down in Japan. They're not looking healthy enough to reach 50 seasons.
I'm not unaware of the challenges facing Japan right now, but I also don't have what I'd consider a full enough understanding of their national politics and overall situation to have opined on it with any authority in this context.
So Technically America's A...(LANGUAGE!) Himself would have been would have been Battle Fever J's 6th Ranger.
Oof, back in the day when this poor shlub said "Irregardless..."
It's Pronounce "Jacker".
If Toei is Secure on Giant Bugmen on Motorcycles, I want a Toku Show about Furry Cowboys.
